Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

Are you online the same as you in the real-world? How honest are you when you speak of yourself on-line?
Should it be expected that people online are all liars and falsifiers, or should we expect more honesty?

missyob 9th November 2003 23:56

To the first question, I am totally real online. I am very true to myself. It is funny how with these forums you end up finding out stuff about me that "real life" friends dont even find out.

To the second one: There are alot of people that are fake online. It is a place to excape reality for them and they can be who they want to be.

Personally I like myself so I stay true.

BullGawD 10th November 2003 00:12

Yeah. I'm pretty much myself online - slightly more outgoing if I'm in the mood. :) I swear a lot less onine, 'coz here it just sounds mean.

On the other hand, I take everybody else at their word, but keep a huge jar of salt handy. I used to think I was just being paranoid, but now, enh. Been right too many times. It's a shame.

ShyShy 10th November 2003 00:14

I'm not that big of a whore in real life :D But, yeah, I'm a complete gutter mind in r.l.

For the most part, when it comes to the serious threads, I know that I'd react the same way in r.l. as I post. Y'all probably privy to moments and thoughts of my life that I haven't even shared with my family. Although I try not to bring my PMS here :D

sgtfuzzbubble011 10th November 2003 00:25

I'm a lot like BG. I'm myself online. Everyone knows my real name ('cept Pix, she still can't seem to grasp the concept :p). And yes, I'm a gutterbrain like ShyShy both online and in real life. :) And when I'm at work, I curse a lot of the time just because I'm around a bunch of guys all day... but away from work I try to keep it to a minimum. I usually only curse online when I'm pissed or if it'll help emphasize my point.

And shtuff.

psyfive 10th November 2003 00:35

I am honest online. I find its easier to tell the truth about yourself and not have to remember whom you told what.
It is the internet tho so I don't expect everyone to believe anything that I say.

No, not for that you perv. :p

Nic01 10th November 2003 01:18

Online I'm the person I really am, irl I'm myself after affects of nature and life experiences and such.

Does that make sense?

I say again, Bollocks.

Am I all that I purport? I dunno, you tell me. =) I think so.

WomanOfHeart 10th November 2003 02:21

I don't have anything to hide in my real life, so there's no need for me to pretend online. I'm just a perverted, outspoken, mean what I say, say what I mean kind of girl.

Coman 10th November 2003 04:04

well *sigh* might as well tell you now. i'm ain't who you thought i was. i'm britney spears and have no life.

apola_anamisha 10th November 2003 04:23

Believe me I'm more crazy 'bout boy-bands in real life!(I had started it here too but after being teased by some senior senior senior members........gotta control myself a lil.Except that I'm the same Apola to everyone, both online & live!
Its hard to be free for a girl from such a conservative society like mine..............but I know how far I could go.I hardly lie 'bout something but in most of the sensitive cases I would better say nothing at all..........This is not hiding, is it?
I honestly belive that I'm honest!

iomegajaz 10th November 2003 04:44

I honestly believe that what you just posted made sense to you. =)

apola_anamisha 10th November 2003 05:25

I am hurt!ALl the mods are so rude.........

Bob the Tomato 10th November 2003 05:29

The only difference between the real me and Bob the Tomato is that Bob is a better speaker than I am, simply because I write far better than I speak.

Ouch, hon'....:D

NJK 10th November 2003 09:18

got nothing to hide - some members have my real name - what I bring into the forums is who I realy am. ( if you don't believe me you can ask the Mrs)

Windude 10th November 2003 10:17

it makes no difference as to who you are online, the govt know who you are anyway, they know everything about you, they can put a sattelite on you day or night, they don't even have to buy the Sunday times, they can read it on your doorstep.

Beware of who you tell things, who you talk too. some things can remain secret.

the govt doesn't know who i am or where i am, they will never know.

SSJ4 Gogitta 10th November 2003 10:24

The only secure internet connection is NO internet connection. By being online, they KNOW where you are windude.

Plain and fucking simple.

Vie 10th November 2003 12:21

I'm actauly more reserved on line than off... ..just imagine that...

s1138 10th November 2003 12:32

i am.
cept i am much more quiet in person. unless i know the person. then i am quite the same.

BOOGABOOGABOOGA!!!!!!!

Or give a shit, I'm sure.

You see what you get. I never misrepresent myself unless it's to get in a pair of panties.

CarboHidrat 10th November 2003 13:25

I am online & tell a truth.

richardharris 10th November 2003 13:25

Im real noline, the same guy that i am offline.

Raz 10th November 2003 13:47

No use asking it online is there.

Everyone whos pretending to be someone else will say 'oh yeah i'm exactly the same'. :p

I don't see the use of being different than real life online, i'm not trying to get anything.

OutlawJim 10th November 2003 15:34

i'd like to think im as much like myself online as off, but you know, there are sometimes when maybe i feel like i'm playing to certain things a little, but not intentionally, just easier to do when you arent actually with the people, and i think its probably the same with most people

godoncrack 10th November 2003 16:58

Am I as offensive online as I am anywhere else?
No.
I am MORE offensive, more hateful, more tasteless, and twice as obscene.

ElChevelle 10th November 2003 18:44

I'm much better looking in real life.

Germ 10th November 2003 18:47

In real life, I am god.

ShyShy 10th November 2003 18:51

Which means diddly-squat to the most of us, since we're either atheist or agnostic :p

You know I had to get you on that one, Germ :D

ElChevelle 10th November 2003 18:58

In real life, I take drugs to deal with germs;)

BullGawD 10th November 2003 19:15

Chev's dirty little secret: In real life, he drives a FORD. :p

ElChevelle 10th November 2003 19:16

That's just a mean accusation, man:p

Gonzotek 10th November 2003 19:46

What is this "Real Life" you speak of? Some kinda mmorpg? If so, I might have to try it sometime...

:D

Can you tell I'm just as geeky if not geekier in real life? And damn proud of it, I'll add.

ShyShy 10th November 2003 19:52

Hey Gonzo!

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....highlight=geek

:D:up:

Gonzotek 10th November 2003 20:15

Hehe, nice one ..:D

The only real difference I can perceive between flesh and blood me and online me is the reactions of others to my actions/words. None of you have ever met the awkward, self-doubting high school version of me(unless you attended Gateway RHS between 1992-1996, and if you did, WHY HAVEN'T YOU EVER TOLD ME?!? :P). The people who've been around me all my life remember that period, and it (I feel) taints their view of me, (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot). They (mostly all of them) have never read any of my 4000+ posts here. I'm the same person either way, but I can sense big differences in people who meet me for the first time, nowadays, and those that have known me for a long time....and between those two groups and the online group.

Does anyone else get that kind of feeling or have similar thoughts?

godoncrack 10th November 2003 20:32

Change has knocked a great deal on my door.

morgado 10th November 2003 20:33

Well, I try to be most honest and real on-line, but I have to be VERY smart ... 'cause there are many cases here from children and even old people been robed 'cause of telling the truth about theirselves on-line, so, I think we have to, something like predicitng when can we be much true on-line, but I try to be it !

White Raven 10th November 2003 20:38

I keep it a personal policy -- What I say here, is what I'd say in real life. So you guys know my personality from my posting.

Cheerio...

Fickle 11th November 2003 00:20

I thinkI'm mellower here. I jknow I'm mellower here, actually. I get really amped and pissed off in conversations offline.
