help: pop ups

I really need to get rid of the pop up ads and crap that pop up even when not online. I have XP on an HP Pavilion@2.0 GHZ. How do I get rid of these things because it is slowing down the system and occasionaly causing it to crash and do erratic things. Please give me any info that you can. The firewall in XP is running but it ain't helping much.

Been there and did that.

Use Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, or some other browser with a good pop-up controller. Just edit the allowed list for any sites that need it, and then enjoy the lack of pop-ups. You can even turn a sound on for when an ad gets blocked for that extra layer of satisfaction.

If they're just appearing out of nowhere, the problem may be much deeper than just the browser.

Since it's happening when he's not even online, i'm guessing it's not popups via the messenger service.

Sounds more like scumware that's crept onto your system, which probably came with something you've installed. If all else fails, a format should fix it.

I use Internet Explorer and most of the pop ups are ads. The firewall stopped the messenger pop ups. I use Smart Pop Up Killer for the pop up stopper. It works most of the time.

Do any of them say Ebates or Toptext/Topmoxy in them? Or anything similar?

deathazre 10th November 2003 23:21

also there's a router company that has their routers running popups for their content filter...

Google Toolbar. Best pop-up killer on the 'net, and it comes with a nifty search bar. It's completly spyware free too.

A fully updated Spybot Search & Destroy gets rid of all spy/ad/scumware.
Unless it's something new that you've got, then you must be doing something wrong.

I love MyIE2, but I wish they'd implement a bypass button or something. Oh, and <3 content filter. Thank god for no ads. :D

Microsoft is about to release SP2 to Internet Explorer, and it includes an anti pop-up stuff ... so ... wait a little and try the SpyBot S&D .... it really works if u get to know how to use it ! ;)

BullGawD 14th November 2003 20:41

Alright, I need help too.

These things pop up in a semi-standard iexplorer window.

I've run ad-aware, spybot (found and deleted several things, mostly data-tracking stuff) and a virus check (found nothing).

I've also reinstalled ie6.

The ads are not practically annoying, (as only one at a time pops up, and that only every 2-3 hours) but they are full-screen, garish and annoy me on principal. I'm not sure, but their appearance may be related to the length of system inactivity as well.

I have a fixed IP and an always-on DSL connection.

Please don't suggest popup blockers as I don't want to simply block the popups, but rather kill the process that spawns them. And take your "get a real browser" comments and shove 'em. If you suggest I format my HDD, I will literally hire someone to kill you. :)

//waits for a smart-assed suggestion he didn't think of.

Yeah, so I'd appreciate any help you can offer, if I didn't just piss you off. :D

morgado 14th November 2003 20:46

Well, if you have an fix IP, and u probably got an SPAM some time ago, someone must have tracked ur IP and are sending these POp-Up's for u ... for now i dont have a solution ... but I'll try to get a solution ....

BullGawD 14th November 2003 20:47

yeah, that's what I'm afraid of - but wouldn't they have to be utilizing some sort of exploit that could be blocked?

morgado 14th November 2003 21:08

Well, as you said, if u have a FIXED IP, they must have had USED something, but u must have deleted it or something, but as well they could know by someway set that u have the fix ip, so they dont need more that stuff ... at least its what i need !

ujay 14th November 2003 21:30

My firewall has taken to blocking what it calls a RPC on port 135(the remote port is 666 btw) which used to pop up an add, wasn't this the same exploit as some recent virus.
