ahem? most bands today couldn't play it at all let alone play it well. "Wow. we're cool. we can play a song of straight power chords the whole time"
Before you say "well metallica uses power chords too", they actually play songs and solos and leads and interesting rythms. and they can make a chours thats not a chord over and over

it's amazing how many metallica fans hate metallica
i don't hate them. they are still my favorite band of all time. no matter what they do nothing can take away that they created those masterpieces of albums and had a large hand in creating thrash itself

Ahem. You need more than skill for a good album. I still rammed hot nails through it, and it still sucks donkey dork. No matter what you say. kthxbye

Take it outside kids. ;)

Here's a small list I compiled based on my understanding of Ethan's guidelines:

Aaron Neville - Tell It Like It Is
Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue
Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
Canned Heat - Going Up The Country
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
Joan Jett - I Love Rock And Roll
Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild
Sly & The Family Stone - Everyday People
T. Rex - Bang A Gong (Get It On)
Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl

(For a start.)

I love that song.

ElChevelle 18th November 2003 01:56

Rand knows what's up.
ALL perfect examples of being the song that they are best known for.

Much more emblematic of the violence of Beethoven, and fitting with the ethan_h's rules would be the 5th Symphony for modern listeners, but it in his own time it probably his 1st symphony that was his first big hit.

Ode to Joy is the finale of the Ninth Symphony- his last one.

it's funny to see you all post songs that are released in the states but are not that big in Europe and the other way around.

the metallica song that would stick out in europe would be Nothing else matters , for sly & the family stone it would be Sympathy.

point is Bands sometimes release different songs on the continent and in the USA or in Australia.
so your point of vieuw on the subject depends on the place you live.

for example if I take randmans post
for canned heat it would be On the road again for me

ssj4 aerosmith- for me it would be dream on and walk this way with run dmc

k_rock923 18th November 2003 18:47

aerosmith would be known for that song from armageddon. i forget the name of it. was horrible compared to their other classics.

ShyShy 18th November 2003 19:46

Has anyone mentioned Men at Work's: Land Down Under?

I've heard that they're still a big thing in South America.

Sandman2012 18th November 2003 20:05

I think these fit in to ethan's guidelines. Sometimes it's not just one song but one particular album that hits big for a particular artist (example: So by Peter Gabriel).

Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
Public Enemy - 911 Is A Joke
The Black Crowes - Hard To Handle
Bob Marley - Exodus
Depeche Mode - People Are People

Hmm, I would've gone with "No Woman, No Cry"

Doktor 18th November 2003 20:30

Wubble-U: Petal
Snow - Informer
Bobby McFerrin - Don't worry, be happy
Oasis - Wonderwall
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in UK

You haven't heard "Fight for your right (to party)"? That's the song right there, 80's anthem and stuff.

DragonSon 18th November 2003 20:45

Shouldn't this have been moved to the Music Forum by now?

What k_rock923 said...

ok heres the deal on metallica. once cliff was gone. that was it. over
Cliff Burton's death had nothing to do with the way Metallica made their new direction once they picked up Jason Newstead. You could thank their new producer Bob Rock for that instead...

Doktor 18th November 2003 20:59

ShySHy, sorry, me forgot... I just went through my playlist and found it there all alone, so I put it here. But I consider my playlist as a quite balanced one... I am just ripping my CDs into MP3s, quite a boring work...

corkhead0 18th November 2003 23:02

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills or Two Minutes To Midnight.

Judas Priest - Livin' After Midnight or You Got Another Thing Comin'

Can't think of anymore.

sidd 20th November 2003 09:06

im genuinly confused by this thread... so many bands listed here have had 5-10 years of fame, or a veritable feast of more successful songs completely ignored.

especially blur, bonjovi, madonna, aerosmith, nirvana, beasty boys and DAVID BOWIE

i dont know how anyone could say that lets dance built his musical career...

oh well.. never mind me....

:|

NJK 20th November 2003 09:18

he sid's back - where have you been lately?

agree on the part about bowie - bad example to say his career went big with let's dance.

but this one you have to agree on

ac/dc - whole lot of rosie

sidd 20th November 2003 09:24

heheh... true.. but back in black, you shook me all night long and thunderstruck were all bigger commercially.

NJK 20th November 2003 09:30

yea but the point was careers built on one song - if you ask anybody to name a ac/dc song - the most people would go with "rosie" right?

I wasn't born in those days, so I can't it remember myself)

Raz 20th November 2003 14:54

For the last time. It wasn't built on that song, it means that whenever you ask someone a pinmk floyd song, most will say that. READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING.

Yeah, well maybe the thread title ought to be changed to reflect that fact then? :igor:

nybergh 21st November 2003 08:39

Anyway, was Another Brick In The Wall an xmashit?

DJ Egg 21st November 2003 09:04

yup, 79/80

But PF were always predominantly an album band,
so it stands to reason that most people would only be able to name that one song (though some slightly older dudes might go for See Emily Play, or Money).

But as for "Bowie - Let's Dance", dunno about USA, but in UK that would be one of the last songs most people would think of :p :D
Space Oddity, Starman, Life on Mars, Gene Genie, Ziggy Stardust, Heroes, and many many others would all come before Let's Puke, umm Dance.

Oh yeah, sorry, but I don't have anything new to contribute. :p :igor:
