Remakes of old hits

What is your opinion on remakes of old hits of past artists, by either the same or a different artist in the future?

One instance would be 'Cruel Summer':

Original track: Bananarama - Cruel Summer (in the 80s)
Remake: Ace of Base - Cruel Summer (in 1997)

I prefer the original track due to it's authentic 80s tune & rhythm to it; whereas the remake is more of a dance mix, which spoils the rhythm/theme of the song.

Any other remakes you'd like to mention?

djmastermind 28th November 2003 16:46

That crap ass remake of "Boys of Summer".......

NJK 28th November 2003 21:04

about everything that came out of the dance scene from 96 until now

it's all covers of former 80's songs

most terrible one I heard was a remake of Ultravox - dancing with tears in my eyes

djmastermind 28th November 2003 21:14

Haha.. that brings me back to my point about the 'Boys of Summer" remixes. A year back or so, someone released a "trance" remake of Boys of Summer. DJ Sammy, I believe. That's bad enough in itself.

NJK 28th November 2003 21:17

@mastermind it's all said in the words "remix"

not creative enough to make their own music

LollipopLustKil 28th November 2003 22:27

Limp Bizkit's new remake, "Behind Blue Eyes"

apola_anamisha 29th November 2003 03:16

All remakes ain't bad.
Boyzone have done some good work like
Baby can I hold you tonight
No matter what
Words
And all of them are better than the originals specially they made somes change in rhythms which are absolutely superb!
But I know you guys will never agree with me coz you hate boy-bands no matter what how good songs they re-produce time to time.Only because you all hate boy-bands.
I also don't care.
No matter what.

LollipopLustKil 29th November 2003 03:18

It's a boy-band, and once again, they have no talent.

apola_anamisha 29th November 2003 05:48

No ........Boyzone has produce some good works of their own!Coz they are damn talenetd in fact all the boy-bands are.....

lmao

i was reading this post and at the time i was disagreeing cause i was playing the remix on my station when i read it was so funny to me. Oh well to each his on. lol. thanks for the laugh this is for the first person who posted on this page. ^^ up top ^^ the cruel summer remix but i also like the original. remixes are cool if you think about it everything is remixed look at the toys they are coming out with today for kids some of them i remember from when i was a kid and they are acting like they are new "New" but they are not. they are just re introducing them cause the kids today never seen them before. remember when bell bottoms came back or "Daisy Dukes" came back. i knew you'd like that one well they bring stuff back cause they knew we liked it so the figured kids today would like the same toys we did. but the daisy dukes thing is just an example cause i know we are all grown up here. Or are we i still play with lego's and they still sell them too. so remixes are just another way to re introduce a good thing. enough said.

Cylob 29th November 2003 15:19

It's a mixed bag. I own loads of remakes that are as good as the originals. What pisses me off are the ones that offer nothing new, the limp, lame, money-grabbing exercises.....

Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame
Atomic Kitten - The Tide is High
Sugarbabes - Are Friends Electric

Youngsters these days are being ripped off.:D

Cylob 18th February 2004 15:15

The No Doubt version of Talk Talk - It's My Life is actually quite good.:)

80's covers are usually screwed right up.:D

So, hats off to No Doubt.:)

Triton4 19th February 2004 14:49

No doubt :D

That was a horrible cover. On top of that, those girls are trading on false pretences - Two of them are definitely not babes, and they're more sickly than sweet. 12 year old girls are definitely being short-changed by this example of frivolous pap. Er, pop.

MidnightViper88 19th February 2004 21:51

I like Metallica's cover on "So What" (Although I forgot who's the original artist)...

Pennywise also makes a good cover on "Surfin' USA" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (From the Beach Boys)...

:D

Mike H. 19th February 2004 22:00

Marilyn Manson does a pretty decent job on the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". I despise most of Manson's music, but this one is good.

Another good one: Disturbed's cover of "Shout" by Tears For Fears.

MidnightViper88 19th February 2004 22:12

Manson ruined the cover on the Ramones' "The KKK Took My Baby Away"... :(

ShyShy 19th February 2004 22:33

311's cover of The Cure's Love Song for the movie soundtrack 50 First Dates was quite decent :) Different groove to it.

I've never heard the original, but 311's version is good.

Someone made a techno version of Comfortably Numb. It's not good.

MidnightViper88 20th February 2004 22:05

My dad bought this album called "Mutations", which was a cover on Alice Cooper's songs...

$20 wasted...Shoulda gave it a test listen before buying, but we learned out lesson now...Why was it wasted? It was a techno remix... :weird: :igor:

ALICE COOPER, DAMMIT!!!

I stand corrected. They're playing The Cure's "Love Song" on the radio right now, and I remember hearing it before.

There is a song called "So What" by Miles Davis, but I found out Metallica covered their song off a band called the "Anti-Nowhere League"...Whoever they are...

That was the Scissor Sisters. It's awful.

Here something really terrible: Britney's version of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll".Bullshit!

MidnightViper88 1st March 2004 21:34

I saw that from "Crossroads" when I was flipping through the channels once...

And she tried to dress "punk"! :weird: :igor:

lostonline 3rd March 2004 12:51

I quite liked Marilyn Mansons cover of Tainted Love. I don't like much of his stuff but this sounded good.

I agree that a lot of cover versions are worse than originals (as said above Atomic Kittens covers). I also agree with the boy bands having no talent bit, they would be better if they learnt to play some intruments (or even learn to sing...)

Xerxes 10th March 2004 06:38

The ultimate cover?
