Whether or not 99% of you posters here loathe performers of this sort, the majority songs they "produce" fall under the catagory of electronica, do they not?

Most of the instruments used in the creation of pop songs are not the traditional variety, like brass, wood, strings, etc., but, purely, software, and hardware, like mixing boards, and such.

But wait a minute...What about hip-hop? This same reasoning can be applied to the hip hop/rap genres.

Where is the line drawn?

I suppose that one could catigorize them as electronic, but they're somewhat a seperate genre.

HipHop.. It's all electronic with no melody (for the most part) with people talking and yelling. I don't consider it electronica.. I consider it crap. Sorry if I've offended anyone.

I guess you could look at it from an intent sort of standpoint. Electronica is intended to be music created by electronic hardware and software. Pop, on the other, is just looking to make something that's catchy and will get alot of radio play. Electronic music just made it easier as pop "artists" do not have to hire a band to play their music, which equals larger profits.

No, in my opinion. "Electronica" is along the lines of Paul Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Synergy, Kraftwerk and Vangelis. It may be "house"-type music, or ambient. There are sub-genres, and some overlap with Trance, House, Dance, Ambient, Techno, and some other terms.

But Britney Spears, *NSYNC, and the like are not considered Electronica, but rather Pop music, or Dance-Pop more specifically. They may also be called Teen-Pop, Dance, Contemporary, or something else, but it's not the same as the music that is really considered Electronica.

Mostly, if the music can be performed by a (regular) band live, then it's likely not Electronica. When Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers, and others like them perform on stage, they're using turntable decks, mixers, synths and playback loops. This is not an absolute way to tell, though, but it's commonly the way it is. For instance, some Dance-Pop music is sourced from decks on stage, but it's still Dance-Pop rather than Electronica.

Genre definitions are really mangled and misused very often, though, and you can almost call any kind of music anything you want. This why I don't even use genres to categorize my music. For reference, here is All Music Guide's (AMG) description of Electronica, and here is their description of Pop. Sub-genres (i.e., "related styles") are also shown, but even their list is not perfect. The variety of music we have now is just too complicated to categorize any more.

I don’t think that pop can be call electronic in that sense. Suppose N'sync or britney(I can use a lot of examples but lets use what you've used).though They use electronic instruments, the instruments never get prority.The main aspect of the pop songs are vocals.The songs are designed in that way so that the vocals can be heard clearly that is the magic of pop-music......(electronic)instruments are only used to add some features.

not only the vocals more the way they look is important.
if britney looked like a troll she never would have made any music not matter how good her voice had been.

Now I'm not a very big fan of hip hop, but some of the artists actually use actual instruments. Take the White Wonder, Eminem for example, he worked with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith for one of his songs. Outkast, another example, they use instruments.

These groups perform with backup bands, so I would have to say no.
