5.1 install halts at cddbcontrolwinamp.dll

The kids networked w95/300HMZ AMD/ GB/IE5.5/Netscape 7.0.....
The install halts with following phrase...
"Unregistering C:\Program Files\winamp\Plugins\cddbcontrolwinamp.dll".
Is there anything in the install options (do custom install) to prevent this from occuring. IF this is CD drive related, there is a CD (D) drive player on the w95. Don't use it since the loading tray that pulls the CD in / out went bad. But we could / do want to use a networked CD drive(E) player (on XP computer). So Winamp will have to carry any required files to present itself as a CD capable player program (read CD files).

Are you saying that the kids are networked via a Win95 system? If so, then there is no need to discuss CD or CDDB issues at all. Winamp 5.x is not supported on Win95 systems. Upgrade the op sys on that puter to Win98 or better, to run Winamp 5.x.

System requirements...

Minimum:

400MHz Pentium II
64MB RAM
10MB Hard Disk Space
16bit Sound Card
Windows 98 or later

Recommended:

1GHz Pentium III
128MB RAM
10MB Hard Disk Space
Windows 2000 or later

Thanks Nunzio390

Darnnnn... Installed 5.1 on my XP, was very impresssed. Throughput the day had been reading up on Winamp, must had been reading a early version when I seen it was compatible with w95. System is to old for upgrade... if I owned w98 OS, could consider it. We'll Christmas comes every year.

PS... Is w95(B), which is 32 bit.... They always said it was a pre-release of w98.

Sorry Dennis :(

btw... even Microsoft themselves no longer support Win95, and you can't install Internet Explorer 6+, DirectX 9, or Windows Media Player 7+ on Win95 systems.

You can try Winamp 5.01 Lite on your kids' puter if you like > Direct Link
Understand though that Lite has no modern skin support at all, no video support, no internet radio or TV, no CD burning or ripping support, and no Media Library.

But Winamp 2.xx should run just fine on your kids' older system. Even though we no longer support Winamp 2.xx here (we tell everyone to upgrade to 5.x), and even though Winamp.com no longer offers anything but 5.x, all older versions of Winamp are available at:
1. www.winampheaven.net
2. www.oldversion.com

Winamp 2.91 was the last officially supported public release before 5.x was released.

You can always uncheck "CDDB for recognizing CDs" in the first setup screen, under the "Audio File Support" section. However, as Nunzio said, Win95 isn't supported,
so there's probably a fair few other things you'll need to uncheck in 5.01 Full setup (eg. modern skin support, sonic ripping/burning support,...)

300MHz is ok (ish) to support Winamp 5, it's just Win95 that's the killer :(

Should run ok in classic skin mode, without the features Win95 cannot support.
But yeah, possibly best to go with 2.91 ?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Currently running WMP 7.1 on w95. This version of WMP is not supported on w95, but used this work around, which after you unzip the 2 of the 3 files, it's a ONE click install... works fine. Guess that's the best I can hope for.

winamp5 works fine on win95b here

DJ Egg 31st December 2003 16:16

Wayhey. Hi LK

Is that the Full install? All features inclusive, nothing unchecked?

Lion King 31st December 2003 21:54

yes, i didn't try ripping/burning but that sonic dll seems to work for playback
cddb, modern skins, etc. work fine
