Wa5
Wow a winamp version that talks longer to start than media player. Who’d have thought it?!?!?
Is there a good reason why I shouldn’t use iTunes from now on?? I have a big music library (40gb+) that iTunes manages wonderfully. It will burn and import CD’s, I can create ‘smart’ play lists or normal ones, and the best thing about it….it’s 100% free!!!!! Sorry nullsoft, you’ll have to do better than make a slow nicer looking WA2 that I have to pay for. |
If it works for you, go with it.
But if you'd like, try changing to the classic skin...you'll still have full access to the media library, which is just about as powerful as the iTunes one (there are differences, both plusses and minuses, of course). Modern skins do require more resources, but are also optional. Personally, both Media Player and iTunes take longer to start than Winamp and each also requires more resources than Winamp. -=Gonzotek=- |
i still find it slow. (on a 2400 XP - 512 RAM)
i'll have to give up on WA for now, and wait for the next verson (WA 8?!?!?) or an update. |
Are you sure you don't have any third party plugins or other cruft loading at Winamp startup? I get virtually zero lagtime between clicking the Winamp icon and it's window appearing, on a just-restarted system, using the classic skin. 1.3ghz/512mb laptop (which is in pretty crappy shape, really).
Rather than waiting for an update that may or may not fix your problem, how about helping us identify it and maybe get it working for you right away? I'm willing if you are. And again, if iTunes works for you, there's no real reason NOT to use it, but since you're here in the Winamp forums, I'm trying to assist you in getting Winamp to work for you too. -=Gonzotek=- |
i'm loading up mmd3 and it takes about 1/2 a second to load up on a p4 2.0 ghz that hasn't been restarted in about a month. on my personal p3-800 mmd3 takes about 1 second. not sure what the big complaint it. i know wm9 takes longer. not sure on i-tunes, never been a fan and thus don't own it.

Sure, but as you say, iTunes works fine for me…but as I’ve been using WA for years now (heard about the WA2 beta (or something) and never looked back) it’s be a shame now to try.
Ok, what I have: 2400+ XP 512 MB SDRAM Creative Audigy 2 player 1x 60 GB HDD (7200 RPM) – Media Drive 1x 40 GB HDD (7200 RPM) – System Drive I think that’s all you should need to know. I have a Radeon 9100 GFX card, but I can’t see that’ll make a load of difference! On to the Software. I have XP pro SP1 (clean installed every 4-5 months). I am a programmer / web application developer, so I have a load of macromedia / Microsoft software installed, as well as a few games. I use outlook 2003 and it’s running all the time. As far as WA goes, I have in the past used Bluetooth to remote control it, so I’ve HAD the remote controlling plug-ins installed, but with WA5 I did a clean install. I have all my media in the WA library, so I guess this could slow some things down. Do you have enough information? I could do another clean install, but as you can see, it shouldn’t be too bad. Ideas? |
when you say slow, are you saying the application is running slow or it is just slow on startup (just for info, wa 5.01 was released a few days ago)? also, what skin are you runnning and besaides outlook, are there normally any other applications running? i have bogged any version of WA down when doing stuff because i've had too much going on at once.

You could try Preferences>Media Library>Library Options>Library Integration Options>Do not load database at startup(disables tracking until library is opened).
And if you don't plan on ever using the modern skins, removing support for them might also help. Same goes for the other general plugins. Out of curiousity, how long of a startup time are we talking about? 1-5 secs, 5-10secs, 10-30secs??, more than a minute???? |
Thank you theknub for your comment, but I would not have posted anything I only had a problem when I had loads of apps open ;-)
I’ve tried turning of the library loading, and I’ve gone from a 25 sec start to a 15 sec start. This is much better, but I remember when WA2 opened in 2 sec max and I didn’t have to turn off some features!! I feel that my PC has evolved at about the rate the software has, so this shouldn’t have to be the case. |
wow... i know that shouldn't be happening. my p-3 800 loads faster. i'll let gonzotec and people maybe with a bit more knowledge handle this... unless i somehow strike a great idea.

thanks theknub, it was worth a try! :-)

maybe a long short but it could be the audigy?

consider the quick start options.
is winamp quickstarting? is MMD3 quickstarting and is WMP quickstarting. first work out if you are comparing apples with apples, if WMP and MMD3 are launching from quickstart then of course they are fast. second thing is i sugest you delete the contents of your prefetch folder, this could be slowign things down. a prefetch folder basicly records the location of a program on the HDD and other various info, it can then save time as it knows where the program is. my personal computer a 2.4Ghz P4 1Gb ram will load winamp in 2-3 seconds using a winamp3 skin (winxp silver theme) WMP starts in 1 second visually, but is useable after 6 seconds. winamp5 is useable as soon as it displays which is 2-3 secs. i hope this sheds some light on things. oh deleting the prefetch folder might slow down the next time you load all your programs but after the first time they will load fast again as they have cached the info again. it might help it might not. If you can't load it quickly with a 2400 and 512mb of ram, then it's your system, not WA5.
|
Winamp loads in less than 3 seconds in modern skin mode and instantly (less than 1 second) in classic skin mode. If it takes any longer then it's your system to blame.
End of topic If you require tech support, post in the relevant forum. But, if you're here to praise a piece of shit like iTunes and slag off Winamp... Trolling? Just say "no!" kthxbye *whacked* |
