A bunch of arguments for God's existance. I've picked out the best, but you should really read the thing itself to get the full impact.

Frankly, this is an impossible thing to discuss with most people. So many people have made up there the minds, and are not willing to consider it. Besides, beliefwise, and argument is not needed, wanted or require. The belief alone is enough.

We're not discussing it, we're laughing at it and pointing out the obvious errors in these all too common arguments. Besides beliefwise, your simple blind belief is not enough to make me believe.

I'm sorry, I refuse to accept the belief that some dude with some 'Plan' that involves allowing children to be raped and murdered daily should be ruling over the Universe.

God knows everything, correct? Well then, to him, we are in the past,present, and future at the same time, and doing an infinate number of things while we're at it. Thoughout our 100 year long lives, we are a mare frackon of a split second of a thought to him. He can't change anything, because to him he knows that the alturnaives are happening AND arn't happening, and he knows all the alturnatives.

If god truely knows everything, this is true.

Therefore, god is on crack. OR
Therefore, STFU and got on with your lifes. OR
Therefore, a LONG time ago, god was a person with a greatly accalerated perception of reality, bordering on precognition, and was basicily really fucking smart. Then people took his image and exagerated it, distorted it, and exagerated it some more. OR

Now I dont get that at all. 'Bordering on precognition' on one hand, while being omniscient on the other. It’s a case of either/or surely?

BTW I do believe in God.
Why? I don't know either. Perhaps I'm a fool, but I've considered atheism, and it doesn’t make sense for me. I believe in God for personal reasons, and it answers for me the question ‘What is the purpose of our lives?’
I'm not trying to convince anybody here, I just thought I'd mention my beliefs.

if nobody knows that God exists for sure, then how are you all so sure what his responsibilities and powers are. we can't prove that the bible is right either so we can't use that as proof.

The first two "proofs" are exactly the same. (i use quotes, because they are not proofs, but theological arguments. Only true proofs can be found in mathematics.)

They both say that event Z has cause Y, and the cause Y (itself an event) had a cause also. Thus there must be an orginal cause. This is flawed because of the authors misunderstanding of infinity.

If the future of the universe is a closed one (the big crunch theory) then it is quite plausble to say that the universe will (and indeed has) keep big-bang-ing and big-crunch-ing for ever.

Scientists don't know if the big crunch will happen (they cannot measure the hubble constant accuratly enough). This "proof" would deny that possible happening.

Of course, the christian is now saying "but what orginally created that? Must be God!" to whom I say, chaos theory says that we cannot know what happened before the big bang. So, jumping to MASSIVE conclusions that the bible is the truth is not the way to go. It is accepting a popular and easy answer to a difficult question. That answer stifles the need to find out more. Not just for you, but for everyone.

The third "proof" says "Hence not all things are mere accidents" The argument hinges on this, but the explanation why is not convincing at all.

The forth "proof" says "Therefore there exists something that is the cause of the existence of all things" yet it doesn't explain why this is so. It explains the possibility of the existance of things that are "extreme", but doesn't go anywhere near to justifying that statement.

The fifth proof starts off my saying "The fifth proof arises from the ordering of things for we see that some things which lack reason, such as natural bodies, are operated in accordance with a plan."

In all honesty, I cannot understand what this is saying, and certainly cannot be the basis of a proof.

@k_rock923: If you believe in a god that has infinite power and knowledge then he would also be responsible for everything, because he would be able to change it if he wanted to.

how the do we know that? we have no idea. people who believe in God's infinite power just assume he created everything. who's to say that someone else created it and now he controls it? who's to say that God created it and now some other God of equal power now controls it. and eventually when that God screws up and destroys everything, the first God comes along again and recreates everything. whatever happened to the laws of conservation of matter and energy. according to those laws, matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. but on the other hand, all matter and energy had to originate somewhere.

the point is that we can argue about the existance of God forever. no matter how long we argue about this, no side can be proved right or wrong. Face it: we don't know and we never will.

I like to belive when we die, eventually. We will know for sure, one way or another.:)

@mrharhar: Believing in life after death does have one great advantage: you'll never find out you were wrong.

One of the things I admire about God
is that He never tries to force you
to believe or disbelieve in Him.
I honestly can't say the same thing about human beings.

Another thing I admire about God,
is that he gave us all a brain.
He then gave us the ability to use that brain,
to make choises in our lives.
He also leaves it up to you to make those choices.

Why would He want everyone to think like He does?
Wouldn't that be selfish of Him?
Wouldn't that make Him more like you than you like Him?
And wouldn't that make living a boring experience,
one without the quest for knowledge or emotion?

You may or may not believe in God.
But isn't it wonderful that you've been given the ability to make that choice?

It's two different views on the subject. One says God is all knowing, and can't change anything cos to him everything is and isn't happening at once, infinately. The other says that God was a human (or maybe alien) a LONG time ago, of such intelligence/wisedom/etc that people thought of him as a 'god' and etc etc blah blah blah, humans exagerated and distorted the truth.

An omnisient being would be a good answer to the unawserable so that we can go on with our lives without wearing out our little brains, wouldn't it?

If there is a God, and he is omnipotent, then he can change things because he can place himself in time. He could decide to not know, for example.

will covered the problems in the post's "proofs" quite well, so i don't feel obliged to add anything, except for the last one:
this argument basically says that things that are not intelligent are only existant in a meaningful form (i assume he's referring to orbits of planets and things) because they are having a "plan" imposed upon them. this proof is invalid because it assumes the existence of a plan to prove it, assumes the existence of god by association and neglects to note that fixed systems nearly always tend toward stability*.

*in this context. i know they go CrAzY sometimes :)
