'Impressive' songs

By 'impressive' I don't mean the best song ever made in the world etc. (there are already plenty of other such threads in this forum :D) This thread is more thought-provoking :)

Say, if you have to recommend your favourite artist to your friend (assuming he doesn't know about the artist), you normally make him listen to one or two songs by the artist, to create an impression about the artist in him.

Now, this song is very important in the sense that it creates a lasting impression in him: if he likes it, it creates a good impression & he will start liking the artist too (or even become a big fanatic of him). On the other hand, if the song is bad, he will despise the artist probably till the end of his life!

If you were to recommend an artist, what songs would you specifically choose for this purpose? Say, I would like to listen to 'The Cure', what song or two would you recommend me to first listen to? :)

Mention some your favourite artists and their 'impressive' songs - they don't necessarily have to be their biggest hits, but more of your personal opinion - and who knows, I may end up liking them as well! :)

Cylob 18th January 2004 09:20

Okay then Triton....

Curve - Coast Is Clear

I bet £1,000,000 you wouldn't like it.:D Despite the fact it's my favourite ever track.... By anyone....

Triton4 18th January 2004 09:40

OK then... I'm downloading it right now ;)

Any more suggestions? Anyone?

Triton4 18th January 2004 13:27

I just listened to it & I admit it's pretty good, but somehow not as awe-inspiring as I had expected.

But a very good song none the less, and I'll check them out soon

apola_anamisha 18th January 2004 13:38

Ok, I can mention one but will you ever bother to listen to it? I feel nobody in this forum will ever try to listen to my recommendations:(
Anyways, its Someday-Michael Learns to Rock(considering you are not into typical slow-pop songs)

Cylob 18th January 2004 13:41

@apola - Try again! Have you got any darkwave or dreampop?

@Triton - It's all personal taste (also depends on your circumstances at the time). Some songs are more than just music...

Triton4 18th January 2004 14:00

@Cylob - As long as the genres are the same, personal tastes don't really matter ;)

BTW, it's my turn to recommend one for you :) What genre?

@Apola - I've heard it, good but not awe-inspiring.

Spazz333 18th January 2004 19:37

Lunachicks - Don't Want You

ertmann|CPH 18th January 2004 19:45

Kashmir - Surfing the Warm industry

OutlawJim 18th January 2004 21:56

Annie Lennox -- Bitter Pill (since thats what i just recommended to a friend a couple of mins ago)

Raz 18th January 2004 22:22

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog

aequo 18th January 2004 22:58

Pink Floyd - Sheep

grumpyBB 19th January 2004 00:47

Virgil Donati - Trencherman

Derek Sherinian - Astroglide

Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over The Rainbow (best version probably ever recorded)

Triton4 20th January 2004 12:39

While I take some time to listen to the songs you've listed, here are a few of my impressive songs:

1. FGTH - Relax
2. Van Halen - Jump
3. Van Halen - Right Now (yes, both of them)
4. Alphaville - Forever Young

BTW, can anyone recommend me an impressive song by the artist 'Rage against the Machine'?

Acolmiztli 20th January 2004 14:24

Autechre - Foil (from the Amber E.P)

Renegades of Funk. Not sure how "awe inspiring" it is, but I'm impressed by the song, especially the (although blatantly obvious) message it delivers, and the music it's delivered with.

Some songs that I find awe inspiring (warning, occasional instances of cheese :D ):

Chantal Kreviazuk ~ In The Life
Pink Floyd ~ Dogs
Synergy ~ Delta Four
LeAnn Rimes ~ Please Remember
L7 ~ Pretend We're Dead
Hole ~ Awful
Liz Phair ~ Flower :D
The Police ~ Voices Inside My Head
Poe ~ Haunted

Triton4 15th February 2005 04:48

Sandra - Maria magdalena

works out a whole lot better if your friend's an 80s freak

Mattress 15th February 2005 07:00

one song that I do enjoy is Faithless - Salva Mea

Spazz333 15th February 2005 07:53

Been awhile. Enjoying the thread resurrections Triton?

Anyways, Virgos Merlot - The Cycle, is one song that I think would classify as very impressive.

k_rock923 15th February 2005 19:52

Derek & The Dominoes - Layla

SSJ4 Gogitta 15th February 2005 22:30

Interesting thread...
Alanis is a hard one to do. Her Jagged Little Pill album is different than her Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie one...

So, for her JLP one:
Alanis Morissette - All I Really Want

For SPIJ album:
Alanis Morissette - Your Congratulations

A band a lot of people here probably haven't heard (except those who've seen the TV crime series "Cold Case". The theme is called "Nara") of. All of their songs are named after ancient cities (Pompeii, Ebla, Isfahan, Tikal, et cetera... All very tribal stuff; drums, chanting. Makes you feel as if you're in a music session 2000 years ago (or with the song "Tikal", being chased through a jungle by headhunters).) E.S. Posthumus has some of their music used in movie trailers (Spider-Man (pretty sure), Planet of the Apes, I Robot).

E.S. Posthumus - Pompeii

Same prob as Alanis with this group. Their Fush Yu Mang album is way different than their Astro Lounge album. Can't say I really enjoy the former, but I love the Astro Lounge album.

Smash Mouth - Walkin' On The Sun
Smash Mouth - Defeat You

Yanni. Yes, Yanni. He has a few good songs I like.
Yanni - Santorini

Juno Reactor (If you've seen the Matrix Trillogy, you've heard these guys.)
Juno Reactor - Masters of the Universe (either full size, or Eternal Basement Remix)
Juno Reactor vs Don Davis - Navras (9 minutes long. Credit-rolling song for The Matrix Revolutions)

The Union Underground. Another group you haven't heard of...
The Union Underground - Untill You Crack

Numeriklab. You haven't heard of them, either, unless you've at least watch an episode of "NCIS" on TV. They did the opening theme.
Numeriklab - Losing Faith

Eiffel 65 (You know 'em.. "I'm blue, da ba dee da ba dye da ba dee da ba dye...)
Eiffel 65 - Europop
For you gamers: Eiffel 65 - My Console

Fatboy Slim - Kalifornia

NJK 16th February 2005 09:11

most impressive song I know

Eagles - the last resort

wasteofoxygen 16th February 2005 21:04

Three off the top of my head -

Mike Keneally - We'll Be Right Back
Frank Zappa - Inca Roads
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Meeting of the Spirits

petitechloe664y 17th February 2005 02:34

you said earlier that you're into cure try listening the alubum wish in its entirety or standing on the beach you'd definitely be impressed with the sound lyrics and the way the tracks are arranged great band

bemymonkey 19th February 2005 02:13

Muse - New Born

Cylob 23rd February 2005 15:01

"Open", the final track on:
http://stat.discogs.com/R/135743-001.jpg

Strangely, it conjures up images of Berlin (1945). I think "harrowing" is the word.

THAT SONG ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolute HOWLING, SCREAMING, ANGRY guitar work that is unrelenting throughout the course of the song.

Kosheen - Hungry
Leftfield - Song Of Life (listen to the original before listening to ANY of the remixes)
Ott - Joyful Wonder (although "Splitting An Atom" would be time well spent also)

petitechloe664y 24th February 2005 02:35

Old New Order Songs from Substance are quite remarkable considering that its made way back in the 80s

JRSellers 24th February 2005 02:39

I'd say the most impressive song of all time is Imagine by John Lennon. His message of global unity is timeless.

Oh yes. :) A sexy voice gliding on a wall of feedback. What impresses me most is the originality, to this day those first few EP's are still a unique sound.

I'm expecting (another) kid soon, the first track it'll hear is Blue Monday. Start as you mean to go on.......

Cylob 24th February 2005 06:24

Slowdive - Souvlaki (1993)
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...733094e5ln.jpg

This album (as a whole) blazes a trail across the sky. The killer has to be "Souvlaki Space Station", 6 mins of rolling guitars and subtle washes of noise. :p

Doggy Dog 11th March 2005 11:03

Well, I can't make up my mind. I'll just put my fav song in the 2004.

The Walkmen - The Rat (the intro + the drumming + the drumming in the intro)

Twilightseer 14th March 2005 10:03

Morrissey - Suedehead :)

zootm 14th March 2005 14:08

Dream Theater - Fatal Tragedy
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Terrible Canyons of Static (specifically the part named "World Police and Friendly Fire", which starts maybe halfway through the track)
