I know there are threads about the iPod, and I did use search, just I couldn't find the specific thread I was looking for so please don't moan at me for starting a new thread =/

I was wondering if anybody here has an issue with the battery of the iPod? It claims it will last around 8 hours, though in reality often it will last 5, sometimes 3, and sometimes if I leave it alone for a long time, more energy is sapped out due to the clock, and supposedly the ipod not actually switching off, just being more so on a standby mode?

Could anybody shed some light on this please, share their experiences with it?

Not at all - I've had situations where I've listened to it on a an hour-long journey at the beginning of the day, then I've accidentally left it playing in my bag throughout the whole day, and it's still had enough juice to survive the journey back home. Probably more than 8 hours.

I agree that the standby/off time is appalling - it will only last a day or two in the "off" state before being completely discharged, although I almost always keep it in its cradle, so it's not a problem for me.

My zen battery has lasted about 12 hours so far. And is user replaceable. I'm sure your sleek design is enough to warrant the extra cost. :p

The iPod's battery is user replacable.

I'm still keeping my MiniDisk, its small, light, carries huge amounts of music in compact format. But best of all, I dont have to spend over a £10 on batteries just to replace it! (I've taken to using recharables, I'm still on the first set, wich for under £3 for four is a lot more cost effective.)

OK, people are gonna think I'm crazy. I took back my iPod today so I could get it from amazon.com for like 130 quid cheaper, turns out they don't ship to the US, so afterschool tomorrow I'm going out to buy a new iPod :D

why would amazon.COM not ship to the US? My friend orders from there all the time and has no problem getting his packages. amazon.CO.UK might not ship to the US, but if you're talking in "quid", you shouldnt even worry about shipping to the US, or even amazon.COM, as you're in England.

minidisc is better than everything

but mine broke, they dont store as much as "everything" theyre loud ( could hear mine with the headphones fairly loud, teh remote broke within 3 months, theyre bigger, theyre heaver, they have moving parts to break, you loose quality recording to them, with the exception of NETmd they areslow to record.

My remote works 100%, it even has a radio built in, and it's 2.5 years old.

I'll think you'll find that iPods and their ilk have moving parts too. And oh guess what - MP3 is a lossy format just like ATRAC

My stereo does 2x CD->MD which ain't bad considering how long it takes to rip CDs to PC etc.

Also one big advantage - PRICE. MD is cheap.

MD is NOT cheap compared to 10GB hard drive players.

Erm, mine cost less than £100

Its headphones can be silent if you wish (I dont give a damn, just as long as its loud for me) its recording loss is neglegable if you know what your doing. It has a dule optical/3.5mm analoge jack input, decent battery life, cheep disks, easyish interface.

No hardwear issues, no need to load special softwear to use it, jogproof, hardwearing (Its lasted two weeks for me, ie about two months for anybody elce) its compact... ..need I go on?

Er, sure it is, you can get a recording MD player for £80 and that's a sony ¬_¬

My MD player's not 100% silent, but then it is quite old, and who cares when you've got headphones in anyway?

The only thing the iPod has over my MD player is a backlight, imho.

Also anougher MD feature - Unlike an Ipod you dont have to worry quite as much about em feilds.

Though I will admit, it takes up to a second to get to some tracks when its highly compressed.

You'd need 219 conventional minidiscs, or 48 LP minidiscs to match the playing time of a 15Gb iPod.

Try telling me that your wonderful 10mm walkman plus 48 disks is smaller than an iPod, whilst also disputing the fact that ATRAC3plus used in the LP minidisc is inferior to 128k MP3.

As well as that, at a cost of £1 per minidisc, you've got to pay another £50 on top of your £80 player, purely for enough media to come close to the 15Gb model.

(and that's in comparison to the iPod, which is hardly the bargain basement of HD media players)

that's 584 minidisks needed to fit all the music my 40GB can fit on it. So size wise, with all those minidisks, and the player, anyone say Mount Everdisk? :p

I have a minidisk player, I put it in the loft now cos I don't really need it.

why do you like hd better than minidisk, cause im looking at this matter right now trying to decide on mp3 player, and i would like to know advantages. from what i know hd are bigger, heavier, and make lots of noise. but that 10gb archos for nearly $200 is drawing me bad.

My iPod HDD makes no sound, doesn't vibrate or anything, the only chance I have of hearing it remotely is in a quiet room with my ear right up to the case.

Also, my MD player was a little heavier than my iPod, and quite frankly, if you consider the iPod heavy and / or large, you are a pussy that should be slapped around a lot till you get your pussy ass into the gym :p

Andrew, a minidisk player weighs zero. I dont need more than 1 gig at any time anyway, I like long tracks that I mix together (12mins + 8mins +14mins I'm talking.) as opposed to short teenie boper songs.

Ian, if my iPod was any lighter, you wouldn't need to be a pro pick pocket to steal it from me, because I wouldn't be able to feel it's existance in the first place!

And the second part of your argument is totally irrelevant to the minidisk vs mp3 player argument, though that might be your intention, and my wrong interpretation.

okay, having owned both (i traded my brother my minidisk for his ps2 since i was getting a hdd for free), i can say something. yay. hdd is nice because its very versitile. you can use it as a portable hdd as well as music playback. its possible to retrieve the songs off the hdd, while sony md players do not let you do that at all. MD has longer battery life but smaller storage and it does take longer to go through only 5 hours of your library (66kbs format). its all a matter of preference, how much you can spend and how much you want to be able to haul around with you.

speaking of my hdd, would anybody like to buy it? retail $399, slightly used philips hdd100/17 15gig

what do you mean by that, cause i just found this iRiver iHP 100 10GB for $300 and want to buy it. and i heard that iRiver is good.

It's a brick, in my opinion. It's not a bad player, it's just he shape and size is kinda shyte.

Yr iPod battery will last lots longer if you use the manual shutdown (hold down play for 2 secs) instead of letting it go to standby. Mine gets about 12 hours to the charge but it's a 2nd gen. The 3rd gen has a smaller battery.
