Plan:
Jan 22, 2004

Well, it took a bit longer than I (or likely anybody else expected), but after four and a half years, I've resigned from my position at AOL. Yay/sigh/etc.

This will likely be the last time I update this .plan, but I might find myself updating the .plan of justin@blorp.com.

peace out.

Justin, you rocked our world. Not just once, but again, again, again, again and again. May it continue without AOL holding you back.

As for the future of winamp, loyal fans, that will be left in the very able hands of Christope and Francis. Winamp is going to continue progessing.

Much Love,

Will Fisher

james 23rd January 2004 07:21

I'm REALLY looking forward to what Justin can do without the evil shackles of AOL :D

Good luck, mate...

baafie 23rd January 2004 07:23

Indeed. Good luck, Mr Frankel.. and thank you for all your great work.

apollos 23rd January 2004 07:29

/me buys Justin a beer, and a new llama, thank you for your excellent program dude <3

mark 23rd January 2004 07:30

Just updated my .plan at landoleet.org, too. Won't repeat it here (in two words:

I've resigned). So begins chapter 3... or something cliche/poetic there.

Or wait, does I've count as a single word? ha ha.

EnDurA 23rd January 2004 08:42

well i'm sorry to see him go. But were ever he is, and whatever he's doing, I know that he'll give it all he has. Rock on Justin

Viper007Bond 23rd January 2004 08:46

I doubt this is the last we'll be hearing of him..

zootm 23rd January 2004 09:18

nice one.

ryan 23rd January 2004 09:26

I'm excited to see what Justin is going to do now.

DuaneJeffers 23rd January 2004 09:31

So Long Justin. I hope you brain comes up with the next biggest thing. I wonder if Nullsoft will be hiring soon, cause I might start college in fall in SF ... but who knows. :)

Anywho, Thank you Justin for the best thing since sliced bread (Winamp).

-Duane

mrharhar 23rd January 2004 09:50

 Thanks Justin. Your the king.

taylormemer 23rd January 2004 10:09

Thankyou very much Justin. You have brought joy to the WinAmp community.

s0be 23rd January 2004 10:59

good god, it sounds like you guys are mourning him. If anything, I see this as his rebirth. Consider this that best friend, who was married to the ball and chain of a woman, never letting him come out and get beligerantly drunk. He doesn't have anyone to whip him now, and he'll be back in full force.... sure, he might spend the first few (days, weeks, months.... it depends on how bad the oppressors are) in a drunken stupor, but once the reverse intervention has happened, nothing bad can come of it.

baafie 23rd January 2004 11:07

Well, this is a goodbye. These are the winamp forums, and winamp's main developer has just quit. So obviously this is not a good thing for winamp.

/me shrugs

taylormemer 23rd January 2004 11:15

I don't think o, well I hope not, WinAmp is widely known and loved so I think WinAmp will still grow.

sidd 23rd January 2004 12:04

wowsers.. i thought the day would never come.

Im *slightly* worried about whether or not AVS will ever see more development. Maybe this was the reason for the incredible spree of updates pre-WA5. Oh well..

Congrats justin! or somthing

...

mc^^^^ 23rd January 2004 12:22

i was hoping justin would go out with a bang :):(
but i guess winamp made him $100 million richer so i guess id at least have *some* respect.... maybe haha

DJHotIce 23rd January 2004 12:38

if this is for real then I'm sad to see him go. I doubt that it's fake mentioning a moderator wrote this.

Justin Farewell. Let me know how it goes later down the road. NULLSOFT won't be the same w/o you! AOL hehe won't be the same without you. Good move to resign because the AOL's stupid heads are just out to make more money off of you.

It's been real. I can't wait to see what next project you'll go after. Coding is a lifestyle you just can't leave it so I know you'll be going after other projects in the future. :)

Sincerely
DJHotIce

though i wish Justin the best, and hope he continues to innovate and do whatever he likes doing... i'm wondering what will happen with winamp now?

will he have no involvement, officially or unofficially? will there be less to expect, in terms of new "killer" features and improvement? how crippled is the Nullsoft team now?

these are unsteady times.

Francis and Christophe are both awesome coders, and they will doing the development now (infact, they coded a lot of winamp 5). Winamp will continue to progress and rock, rest assured.

Closing time
Open all the doors and let you out into the world
Closing time
Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every girl
Closing time
One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer
Closing time
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home

Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from
Closing time
This room won't be open till your brothers or your sisters come
So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Best of luck to ya!

mark 23rd January 2004 15:30

Amen

Bizzeh 23rd January 2004 15:41

before, justin had the money of aol to back him.
now, he doesnt have the AOL chains holding him down, AND has his own money to back him.
i have a fealing, justin is planing somthing BIG

cmountford 23rd January 2004 15:47

agreed...I'm most curious to see how the situation takes shape

unfnknblvbl 23rd January 2004 15:49

Justin Frankel
John Carmack

Two programmers who can do no wrong and are veritable Gods in their respective realms.

Thankyou Justin for the time you've spent at Nullsoft and making Winamp the best media player available today.

May you find some way to blow our minds with your newfound freedom :D

Mr_007 23rd January 2004 15:50

Sorry for this news.
my very like justin.

WhiteRayven 23rd January 2004 15:53

I smell Wasabi... Any one else?

dlinkwit27 23rd January 2004 16:02

I wonder what the contracts were that he was under. AOL may have put in there a clasue about not creating any "rival software" for X years, or working for a rival companyh or something to that affect.

liquidmotion 23rd January 2004 16:02

porn.

Kaboon 23rd January 2004 16:48

53x.

Arvenius 23rd January 2004 16:49

i heard rumours of him working on a new video-codec especially designed for pron, rumours also has it that this thingy can encode 2hr dvd quality porn to 200mb...
but thats only rumours of course =)

evil_oj 23rd January 2004 16:53

Thanks for everything Justin!

Kind of a bummer to hear that you're leaving, but it makes it OK to know that you weren't happy under AOL. I think Winamp will do just fine from here on, cuz you've lead it in the right direction.

Winamp has never not been #1 for mp3, and now all sorts of media.

Most of my favourite music has been played through Winamp, and music is really important to me, so Winamp too is important to me.

Take it easy dude! Thanks again for all the innovation!

MasterViVi 23rd January 2004 16:54

God, another one gone >_>

G'bye Justin :)

eleet-2k2 23rd January 2004 20:12

Good bye Justin and thank you for all your hard work and dedication! You will be missed.

s1138 23rd January 2004 20:21

mixed feelings...
happy he is gonna be free to do what he wants.
sad, he wont be part of nullsoft/winamp. it was his creation after all.
hopefully we will still see some awesome shit coded by him.

anubis2003 23rd January 2004 20:31

I'm sure he'll be back - not here, but somewhere else. He'll remain one of the better programmers out there making some of the sweetest shit. Justin - good job on everything you've done and good luck on everything you will do in the future.

Germ 23rd January 2004 21:07

He has yet to /quit - he's still idling like he normally does.

Omega X 23rd January 2004 22:11

I wonder what Winamp will be without him running the show? Maybe its about time to shop for a new media player just in case the Next few Winamp versions become crap, which is the usual AOL standard.

Germ 23rd January 2004 22:26

Look kid, we've told everyone a few times already that Christophe and Francis are working on future releases of Winamp, like they have the previous releases. Winamp will be fine and at it's current state is very very good already. People like you are really really annoying. Really.
