L lot like "modern art", I really don't find anything intresting about random 3d shapes thrown together in random color patters, such as the "wallpapers" (I prefer "desktop wallpaper", or "desktop" for short) you posted.

However, I do keep a large collection of good desktops :p, and I enjoy adding to it. I'll post a couple of my current favorates tomorrow.

Even though I have thousands of desktops, my current desktop is 0x004E98, which is a nice solid blue color.

Hmm.

/note to self, change wallpaper

whiteflip 29th January 2004 21:29

I have about 1,085 downloaded wallpapers (give or take the duplicate files i made to edit some and the ones I have but havent moved into the wall paper folder and yeah) at 241MB (242MB size on disk).

I also have digital camera pics I have taken that would make awesome wall papers but I didn't include those.

83.36% of those wall papers are of women :)

I took a lovely red rose picture by Andidas and changed the colours in PSP to get about 6 different versions. At the moment I'm using the attached one with a blue XP theme and the Artica Modern WA colour. And it's all a bit spiffy. The image is originally 1600x1200 btw but I just shrank it for here.

How are they random?

Smeggle 29th January 2004 22:19

I'm currently using the windmills that are in Adobe Photo Shot elements samples. It's a night shot with the windmills all lit up with coloured lights- looks really nice *shrugs* well I like it anyway :)

~ :)

Um - because they are. Because it's some person making them, admiring thier own skill in creating abstract crap. "Ooh, a blue stretched thing across like this, that looks so pimp!" "oh, and a orbit kinda thing!" "don't forget random coordinates!"

Please. There's more art in true randomness (like, say, the middle of the ocean) than nearly all of the backgrounds like that.

I call it the shiny syndrom - "ooh, pretty!"

I've seen visualizations that produce thousands of those basic backgrounds, minus the text. There's nothing special, except maybe being more anti-aliased.

whiteflip 30th January 2004 07:16

I take it someone doesn't like the photoshop nerds out there :)

Raas 30th January 2004 07:30

I have to agree,I hate those strange wallpapers where you have to figure out what the heck it is you have on ur desk.
Deviant(art?)
Themexp.org has my kind of flavors.

psycho_maniac 30th January 2004 07:38

psycho_maniac 30th January 2004 08:19

wp1 is good, idiot.

i scanned mine from a comic book. luckily it's quite easily compressed, so here's a PNG version of the original BMP (that i use) that's fairly undamaged.

this probably infringes copyright, but it's only half a page of comic (and you should all read caballistics inc. in 2000ad anyway)...

indicavia 31st January 2004 02:39

I use this one right now. I like most of these too.. :)

Fickle 31st January 2004 02:54

This is my wallpaper. It's centered, not stretched.

Before this I had a Dawg4Life pic he posted in the art forum.

Actually, some of the best take great time and effort in planning out the designs of their abstract wallpapers. No reason to marginalize their talents.

Fickle 31st January 2004 03:11

I have to admit, making those wallpapers are hard, I sometimes find them very bland though.

psycho_maniac 31st January 2004 03:50

those are some cool wallpapers indicavia. i read this one guy said it took 8 straight hours.

Just because it takes a long time to do, or it's difficult to them, doesn't mean that it's good. Indeed, learning that makes me even more amazed at how crappy they are. Do you have any examples of what you consider "good"?

Namelessv1 1st February 2004 20:37

a quick rummage through deviantart:

xzxzzx 1st February 2004 22:11

Hmm. Those arn't too bad. It still looks like random crap thrown together with one color, but it at least as some skill in depicting the random crap.

Namelessv1 1st February 2004 22:40

Can you elaborate on what exactly you see as "random" within those wallpapers?

Ok, fine. Let's take the third one. Tell me, what is it?

I see some tubes, or legs, - or something.

It's some sort of digital display, as we can see some mostly unreadable text describing certain parts, and some transperant rings that signify - something.

There's some kind of light near the rings, coming from - something.

Then there's the background, which is inside - or maybe outside - and it's a factory - or maybe a city.

There's a lot of sharp angles, and shadows, and transperant - um, things.

Don't get me wrong; it's technically fairly well done, even though you can't really see enough of many parts to tell even what shape they take (in the background).

Namelessv1 1st February 2004 23:01

Fair enough. Abstract is abstract.

xzxzzx 1st February 2004 23:02

You're right. And abstract is almost always crap.

matt512 2nd February 2004 19:32

They do look nice tho, I quite like having a bit of eyecandy on the desktop.
At the moment i've got this, it's not eyecandy but its so funny. (His name's carlos and he carries around a big stereo playing german rock music)

Oh this is great problem!
wallpaper of my pc.

cooky560 4th February 2004 11:42

I've liked most the wallpapers here, resizing one to a suitable background res.

bgesley 4th February 2004 18:25

Why does a picture need to BE something? Basically all you are seeing in ANY picture is shapes and forms, colors and depths. The only difference in Abstract art and still life is "sometimes" the subject matter, or the elements used. Its just another way to create something the eye can see and have the eye wander around the canvas in order for the mind to keep interest.

So you're saying static is even better, because there's more to see?

Mike H. 4th February 2004 19:05

xzxzzx, what kind of wallpaper do you like?

Good ones, of course. Generally, anything that doesn't look like someone spent 2½ hours adding random transperancy effects just to make the scene even more complicated. One that looks like it has a definate idea to it.

I'm assuming you mean non-photograph backgrounds. I have a few of those, but since we're talking about "created" art, here are a couple of my favorates in that category:

http://xzxzzx.com/xzxzzx/gravity_well_1600x1200.jpg
http://xzxzzx.com/xzxzzx/fluorescence.jpg
http://xzxzzx.com/xzxzzx/Velocity_has_a_posse.jpg

Warning: Optimized for big-ass resolutions (1600x1200, usually).
