What the hell is it? And why is it so "cool"?

Actually, people that find curse words offensive should find the censored versions less offensive, right? I mean, it doesn't make sense in the first place, so...

You would think that they would actually find it more offensive. The * stands out to the eye, so the viewer is drawn to the 'f*ck'. It's like instead of being subtle, it's emphasized.

It's a hacker-type language. Using 3's for E's, 4's for A's, 7's for T's, 1's for L's.. etc etc etc.

It's not a new form of 1337, it's just that game's vocabulary, their jargon if you will. Every game has it. In starcraft when I played new players were n00bs, but when I switched to play AOE, new players were rooks. Same meaning, different slang.
