Idea's for Shoutcast's DSP 2

Hello,

Now i know there hasn't been any plans for the Shoutcast DSP 2, but hopefully nullsoft will read this and will get cracking on it.

I was wondring what types of cool updates and new features would you like to see once they do update it. Hope we get sone interesting thigs here, and that a lighbulb turns on in nullsofts head. Thanx!

How about a better GUI, more Options within plugin - like scheduler, mixer, make it more compatable with PHP perhaps.

How about it being able to stream using MP3Pro or better yet, how about creating they're own streaming standard thats compressed to get more out of your bandwidth.

Maybe for the DNAS, instead of using a txt document, how about creating a wizard instead.

Just some Ideas

ruffdawg 12th February 2004 01:53

 sounds like good stuff! this thread also can apply to the DNAS as well :)

ruffdawg 14th February 2004 04:10

Another one for the DNAS is when a connection closes, it could possibly show as (HH,MM,SS) instead of (SSSS).

John_Shumate 14th February 2004 04:15

That would be pretty sweet

BroadandCast 14th February 2004 06:08

How about running multiple streams without having to run multiple instances of the DNAS??..ohhhhhhh heaven. Now that I would like.. 'cause baby I like the lazy solution..

An auto-kick stream scheduler would be great for ensuring DJs get off the air on time and an auto source for the DNAS to look for if nobody connects instead of having to ensure you've got something running..listeners HATE getting a repeating "Sorry this broadcast is off the air" mp3.. something like an option for another relay it will grab and shoot out for when you're off the air... ya know?

I'm just fulla it.. errrr ideas!

Great cracking nullsoft.. I'm waiting! :)

DJHotIce 14th February 2004 15:47

All things I believe IceCast can do ;)

the Nullsoft people don't see us (the broadcaster) as worth much of anything, from what it seems.

IceCast has been constantly developed and seems to be the better alternative. It can run on multiple instances, has a admin interface, less resource intensive, works its best with SHOUTcast. Allows you to list on virtually any YP known to man (cept shoutcast.com) and other stuff :)

http://www.icecast.org

It works with SAM2 scheduling software and can stream in both OGG and MP3 format, which OGG sounds just as good as MP3 cept saves bandwidth!!! Plus IceCast (like SHOUTcast; can be run on a multiple of OS')

ruffdawg 14th February 2004 17:03

Great suggestions Broadandcast! and DJhotice, i think I count agree more. I don't like to bash nullsoft but when www.shoutcast.com hasnt been updated in 2 years, they obviously show how much they care about us. Also, I think I'm going to stick with shoutcast instead of switching. Keep 'em comin'!

DJ Killer 14th February 2004 17:29

KRR may switch to icecast next month and go to ogg. MP3 is gettin rediciulous

ruffdawg 14th February 2004 17:31

Why not just use a plug-in?

DJ Killer 14th February 2004 17:44

shoutcast is closed source. icecast is open source. I rather stick with open source than closed source. after all, where has windows gotten me? nowhere. Where do i want to go? to pluto. But only Linux can do that. Windows can only get us to 50 feet of where we once were.

BroadandCast 14th February 2004 19:00

hmmmmmmm icecast sounds interesting? Good for the lazy broadcaster to get up and running?

djmastermind 14th February 2004 19:01

Bing Bang Boom.

BroadandCast 14th February 2004 19:35

rockin thanks! I'll def check it out..

ruffdawg 15th February 2004 03:46

Does Icecast allow you to get listed in the shoutcast directory? I'm really debating the switch.

DJ Killer 15th February 2004 06:08

no shoutcast directory is proprietary to shoutcast. It would be on many other directories tho.

ruffdawg 15th February 2004 13:10

More direcories than shoutcast?

DJHotIce 15th February 2004 13:16

well for one. IF your looking for a YP. You can use these
http://www.icecast.org
http://www.oddsock.org
oh and my fav:
http://www.blue-music.com
I've allready got a crude YP going on!
http://www.blue-music.com/index.php?go=icecast
plus I have the original SHOUTcast YP
http://www.blue-music.com/index.php?go=radio

there is a workarround on the icecast I bet that could be used to allow the station to be listed, however if Tom found out you'd get banned from the YP for life, w/o perole.

oh and if you wanna try it out.
add where you add directories (in the format specified in the server config file)
http://www.blue-music.com/yp.php

ruffdawg 15th February 2004 17:05

See, I would like to use the SAM encoder for Winamp, but I can't find myself listed in the shoutcast YP.

DJHotIce 15th February 2004 17:56

ruffdawg, make sure you have selected public on the Config if streaming with MP3.

If your streaming mp3 through a icecast server; you won't be visible on the shoutcast server because SHOUTcast doesn't like IceCast.

LiFe .04 15th February 2004 23:47

sounds gr8 but how runs servers for icecast because all the hosts only do shoutcast or im i missing something like you can use a shoutcast server?

ruffdawg 17th February 2004 02:05

So, DJHotIce, I must stream MP3 in order to be listed in the Shoutcast YP?

ruffdawg 17th February 2004 21:18

Ah, I got one... how bout an auto kick, instead of logging into the shoutcast admin. Like a small intergrated "Log In" portion, and it can have all the features the Admin page has, but on shoutcast.

BTW, does anyone know how many posts you need until your a "Forum King"?

Ogg? Do you currently have too many listeners and you want to weed most of them out? ;)

X-Net Chew 19th February 2004 09:00

I'm all for nullsoft taking a break after getting winamp 5 out there, but come on now guys, screw your bosses at AOL T/W and give us our updated transcoder that we've been longing for!

You wonder why people have been leaving shoutcast for other streaming solutions... well I'll give you one guess. SUPPORT all we need is a little encouragement and shoutcast can once again reclaim it's crown of streaming radio king!

A couple things I would like along with the other people that posted above me. A transcoder that has the ability to connect to multiple steams, play the same thing, but at differing bitrates. Oh how my life would be complete.

Also, upon a bitrate change, have the users stay connected instead of having the stream lockup on them, and requiring them to reconnect.

Those two and I would be happy.

Chew

And can someone PLEASE make this a sticky?

ruffdawg 19th February 2004 20:12

Ah, Chew is a Nullsoft "Hinter" just like me. Unfortunatly complaining won't get us anywhere (believe me, ive tried) and making this a sticky would be a good idea.

DJHotIce 19th February 2004 21:39

I was listening to a stream today and it was a real server stream; if the user cannot handle it the server would lower the bitrate and try to eventually raise it up; preventing a buffer!

So no matter what the original bitrate was it would transcode it for you; would be nice..

But the guys work only on winamp :( but thats good; just not good enough. I've looked at some of the other forums here; plugin support; skinning; wassabi. And noticing that wassabi is dieing; why. Because nobody wants to code for it. Oh well. I'm not a broadcaster so it don't matter to me; I recomend Icecast to all those who need it.

X-Net Chew 20th February 2004 10:22

I've looked into icecast, however the one feature I really need, still isn't there... I need to transcode the same source to two different bitrates.

And I've heard uptime problems with icecast... something I simply cannot afford.

Chew

gamejv04 22nd February 2004 05:21

Hey if I were to download Icecast, would I also need to download a server package like winamp, or when you download it, everything comes with it? Plus would SAM2 work with Icecast?

djmastermind 22nd February 2004 07:37

http://www.spacialaudio.com/products/sam2/

Scroll down.. it tells what it's compatible with in bold letters.

gamejv04 22nd February 2004 19:37

so can u still use Winamps Server with Icecast? Sorry Im still new at this
