Favortie downtempo artist?

Do you listen to the genre?

If so, who's your favorite artist?

Haven't heard of this genre yet. I suppose it's kinda like a mix of Jazz and Ambient, right?

chillhead 15th February 2004 16:38

More or less, you're correct. :)

From my website...

Downtempo is a word used to describe a genre of chilled-out beats on an unhurried, deliberate platform of music. Under this broad definition a listener can discover a montage of smooth and fat rhythms based on hip-hop percussion and jazz textures.

Downtempo is usually an instrumental-based formula in the spirit of hip hop and jazz, but also draws from electronica, bossa nova, ambient, dub, latin, reggae and intelligent drum n’ bass compositions. Common forms are deeply dependant on bass lines found in funk, reggae and/or dub. Similar to house and drum and bass musicians, downtempo artists create morphed soundscapes that draw from a long history of musical genres.

For the last 10 years, downtempo has been constantly reinventing itself, regenerating and spawning new and unique variations.

They have a new album out soon - 'When It Falls'.

Triton4 16th February 2004 15:27

Dude, who's the guitar guy in your avatar? :)

chillhead 16th February 2004 15:51

Cyclob,

I'm playing three tracks off the new album on my program; Passing By, When It Falls and Morning Song. Outstanding tracks!

Last week I received the promo from their UK label, Ultimate Dilemma.

I'm looking forward to it myself chillhead. Zero 7 are flying the flag for UK electronica right now.

Six By Seven....

My second-favourite noise-pop band.:) Someone once remarked (after seeing them live) 'it's just a load of noise'. I said 'Yes...... and what's your point'?

Triton4 16th February 2004 16:39

Noise-pop? Hmm... another new genre I gotta check out :)

Sorry to derail thread.:)

I think I've heard Medicine before. Didn't they make a song called Time Baby III? I don't have my crow soundtrack near me so I can't really check on that.

Cylob 17th February 2004 05:36

They did.

Thanks Spazz, I must get The Crow. I'd forgotten all about it.

Zero 7 are good, am looking forward to hearing the new album. Also up there with Zero 7 are Air (in particular Moon Safari), Blue States and Lemon Jelly.

Cylob 18th February 2004 14:29

Now you mention Lemon Jelly I can't resist the temptation to post KY....

"At best, a rich man's Air. At worst, tedious, superfluous, hippy-dippy, overly ironic trash."

I haven't made up my mind yet.
