need help analysing a poem
for english we have to do an essay analysing a poem using the tp-castt system, which stands for title (literal), paraphrase (literal), connotations (all the figurative language), attitude, shift, title (figuratively this time), and theme. i was wondering if anyone here could give me some ideas using that system on this poem:
The Splendor Falls Alfred, Lord Tennyson The splendor falls on castle walls And snowy summits old in story; The long light shakes across the lakes, And the wild cataract leaps in glory. Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, Blow, bugle; answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. O, hark, O, hear! how thin and clear, And thinner, clearer, farther going! O, sweet and far from cliff and scar The horns of Elfland faintly blowing! Blow, let us hear the purple glens replying, Blow, bugle; answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. O love, they die in yon rich sky, They faint on hill or field or river; Our echoes roll from soul to soul, And grow for ever and for ever. Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, And answer, echoes, answer, dying, dying, dying. If anyone could give me ideas using the tp-castt system that would be great. thanks. |
Try the poetry thread, in the arts and designs forum. You will probably find better help there.

Sad how in English class we must resort to butchering any good piece of literature that comes our way.
I'll help you as soon as I know this - What's the 'shift' in a poem? |
so you want us to do your homework for you?

Whats worse is they dont seem to realise that most people who write books, write books not some deap phycological meaning hidden deap within a small thing. "Somtimes a cigar is just a Cigar" I wish people would rember that. PS, Tankgirl Avitar? |
I'm a poet, but I don't like to pick apart pieces of writing and trying to solve it. I can write poetry, but I failed in nitpicking the details. I don't even think izchan would know it either..
You're on your own for now.... |

You could always buy a book on analyzing poetry. A beginners guide to poetry or something like that. There are also librarys that may contain these books. You should go there.
If you want I can analyize the poem for you but I will purposely do it falsely. |
It starts of with a few words, that carry on into some sort of coherence, more words, words, words and a full stop or three.

AP teachers are like: "Analyze this", and then you're so bent on "Analyzing" it, that you Over-Analyze it to the point where you start going into how you think the poem had something to do with the Writer's bad childhood when his cousin thrice-removed died because his great-grandfather choked on a lemon, and about how the lemon-producing company was from France, and something about the French-Revolution.
I mean shit. <Edit>Tell your English teacher to go shove it.</Edit> |
