Where does it say "to use the 'Nullsoft Disk Writer' or another plug in"?

The hi-lighted Output plugin is the active one.
Only one Output plugin can be active.
The Output plugins used for normal playback are:
WaveOut (recommended under Win9x/ME)
DirectSound (recommended under Win2k/XP/2003)

To play MIDI files, all that is required is the Nullsoft MIDI Player plugin (in_midi.dll)
Is this listed under: Prefs > Plugins > Input?

If not, then I've a feeling that you probably installed Winamp 5.02 Lite.
MIDI Support is NOT included in the Lite version.
Install the Full version instead (also free).

Oh, right. Yeah, that's if you want to convert the MIDI files to WAV files, so you can burn them to CD or put them on portable players, etc. Nothing to do with normal playback though :)
