YP is broken

Yes, the YP is broken.
It's a free, as-is service.
Deal with it.
Apply coffee algorithm

The DNAS is independent of the YP.
That is, the DNAS will continue to function properly when the YP is broken.
Have listeners connect to the DNAS directly.

When (I)(we) know more, we'll pass it on.

In the meantime, have patience.

I'm a volunteer here. Getting upset at me is stupid.
Please think.

DamnGood 25th February 2004 17:40

This is so funny. I don't think people get upset with you cause the YP is broken, it's your "smart" answers for one. For instance in this post you remark "deal with it". WHAT??And for two it's that answers don't even come. Why wouldn't someone from SC simply post what was going on rather than leave everyone who may not understand in the dark. Getting going, and running smoothly on Shoutcast maybe easy for some but not for all. So if you can't deal with all the questions you will get from those who may not understand, and if you can't deal with people getting upset cause their not getting answers or their getting cutting or smart remarks, then you may be "volunteering" in the wrong place. I read these forums often and the way people respond to one another is unnecessary at times.

I did notice a cold draft for a moment there.

I guess this solves my problem in thinking for the first time ever I was having problems installing the DNAS on a new server. Guess I picked the wrong week to do it.

I think I'm going to be upset at Festerhead anyway, just because he suggested the Coffee Algorithm instead of the Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola Triple Shot remedy.

Anyway, while hell is freezing over I'm gonna go get me some free ice cubes.

Thanks for the info festering head!

cityradio 25th February 2004 21:19

i agree with damngood , all some people want on here is straight answers and maybe a little help . Some of the smart arse replies that appear on here to users questions are uncalled for and the people that post those sort of smart arse replies just show themselves up for what they are.

Jay 25th February 2004 22:00

the fact is you complain about a free service to volunteers, if Nullsoft doesn't want to give answers then there is nothing we can do about it. If we ignore the millions of threads being created then complaints come in about being ignored. So take your pick.

Acontios 25th February 2004 23:53

Let's see the good side of the failure: It loads less heavily our relays in term of bandwidth ;-)

I've saved 70+ Mb/s today...

-Just kidding, hope it will be back soon. Good luck, techz !-

Clusters not clustering on YP?

Hey all --

Since the YP came back up my 128k cluster isn't clustering right ... meaning I'm getting 3 YP listings across my 7 servers.

Some clustered, others haven't ... no changes on my end at all.

Click on this search link to see what I mean:
http://www.shoutcast.com/directory/?...e&numresult=25

Anyone getting the same effect?

Tom, if your lurking, is there a stuck sticky bit somewhere you can unstick for me :)

Thanks!

Yup ... things appear to have worked themselves out overnight. I've seen this happen before, but not for such an extended period ... also, in the past, killing the stream and waiting for all the YP entries to expire seemed to resolve it ... not this time.

I also dropped a note to Tom ... he might have kicked something.

All's good now. :)

ANOTHER SMART ARSE REMARK FROM A MOD, damn you know i will take my pick, i would like the same answer but instead of taking time to come up with a smart arse remark just tell us what you know and end the damn post without the snippy remarks. Just because there are times where you can't have all the answers, thats not a reason to be an arse. btw is swearing allowed cuz saying arse instead of a*s, it really sucks arse!

MegaRock 26th February 2004 20:12

I'm not sure if I have an issue or not from this still.

I installed a new DNS on the day this occured and I am still getting 'unable to resolve' type errors for yp.shoutcast.com. Traceroute isn't reaching it (dies out on ADTn) and cannot ping it however I am reaching all other sites fine and I can access the DNAS from the outside - it just refuses to talk to the yp, and I notice many other stations are quite low on slots (like Radiostorm) who have alot more than 700 slots online.

Right now, 110 slots of mine aren't appearing in the yp.shoutcast.com at all but all the others are there and working fine.

Go figure.

Now, it looks like time for some more Jack.

106Jamz 27th February 2004 01:34

my server still isn't showing up on the yp listing of shoutcast, even though its successfully connected and etc..so its still broken

To All Of You Complaining

Since you seem to have a problem with the mods saying it, I guess I will say it. We are lucky that these forums even exist. If these forums were removed, and we didn't have any help, I guarantee none of yall would be here. I know I wouldn't. And while I know what you mean about the smart comments, I don't mind, because I could imagine if I had to give the same information over and over, and answer the same questions, no matter how many times you tell people to search. The fact of the matter, this service is free, and without these wonderful mods, and extremely helpful members, we would be on our own, and wouldn't be able to make a post, wait an hour, and the problem is fixed. So before you go to criticizing ANYONE, stop, and think about it from their point of view.

trsbbs 27th February 2004 14:59

"We are lucky that these forums even exist."

You mean to tell me that Shoutcast does not make anything or benefit from the listings and website and thet we are lucky this is here?

They must get something out of it or they would not keep it online.

Its a two way street. They get something out of as do the broadcaster.

Respect goes both ways.

Being rude or not communicating an issue to the people that populate the YP is cutting your own throat.

Silence breeds mistrust and rumors. A small note about the systems status would be a good thing for all,. less badgering of the moderators and a more friendly and useful forum would result.

Anyways, got a to many connections to the SQL when I first came to the website today. I do not need to know why, just letting you know.

Tim

peppert 27th February 2004 15:07

we found the culprit, a drive failed in the primary db master. i've managed to move the whole site onto a single slave db but it seems to overwhelm it from time to time (shoutcast takes so much traffic it requires multiple hosts to run the database of stations)

the drive and controller that failed have been replaced and we're restoring the o/s onto the master db host from yesterday's backup as we speak. stats and yp may be intermittently available over the next couple of days but it should go back to stable by monday.

thanks for your patience and not beating up our poor forum moderators. they volunteer their time for your benefit, so please be kind to them.

I get this repeatadely.. Yes I Know the YP is down =)

I Just wonder if I have to restart my server once the YP is back online?

Sorry if my question seems stupid but I´ve only played around with ShoutCast for a couple of days now.

Addendum to the Coffe Algorithm =)

Once the YP is back up, the touches will start up without DNAS interaction.

Thanks Tom.

HellFire 27th February 2004 15:14

Never mind that, heh... I just saw the YP was up and rolling fine, just when I finished my last post *lol*

YP up but I'm not in it....

Does anyone know why my station is not in the list? I restarted server and SC but no listing in SHOUTCast page(stream is working thru direct DNAS connect)

Thanx in advance....

I can't seem to listen to anything. Any tune in link opens winamp and then attempts to open something, but it looks like it gets confused and starts the Open function with no address or file.

Probably why no one is on the servers

biscoradio 27th February 2004 19:26

yeah, I noticed this as well. I don't really care as most of my listeners don't come through the shoutcast website.

I am wondering if this will mess up the stats in the ttsl. I've dedicated my streams to a different band this week, so I was going to tell them how many hours of music I streamed for them... Will the ttsl info be inaccurate as well?

thanks,
rob

peppert 27th February 2004 20:32

aol now thinks the master host has FDDI onboard, so they're dragging their heels reloading the O/S. And, they're requiring an O/S upgrade while we're at it. *sigh*.

the list of stations is frozen at the moment. new stations won't appear and the data is at least a day stale now. the total stats are accurate but ttsl report won't update and won't include data from the past few days.

See the servers with the word "Cluster" in front of their names in the YP? Tune-in to one of them, you'll see multiple DNAS servers.

The YP will send listeners to the DNAS server in the Cluster with the most free capacity ... simple load balancing.
