Help? No RAM.

I have 768MB of RAM. And for some reason, 25% is always missing. When I'm idleing.

Here's a hijack log, if someone could diagnose me. Thanks.

Seeing this isn't really a Winamp related issue, I'm moving this from WA-TS to GD.

I doubt if this is software related, even though it's nice to see that you've not got any viruses/trojans/spyware.

More than likely, it's hardware related.

How many memory modules do you have?
eg. 3 x 256mb
Is it all the same type? (eg. DDR or SD-RAM)

At a guess, it will be some onboard features which are using your physical memory. And some could be going in disk cache...

What is your motherboard?
Does it have an onboard graphics chip?
If yes, then what is its memory and agp aperture size?

whiteflip 15th March 2004 06:41

Im guesing his motherboard doesnt support that much ram.

gas-attack 15th March 2004 15:40

Or he's got a DDR-RAM supporting mainboard and tried to add some SD-RAM...

Smeggle 15th March 2004 16:38

more than likely bloody Norton is using it all...

anyway jet Hi and welcome to winamp...

ok
1. your Hijack log is no good - it's only gonna show your running process's what is needed is your system specs ie.e Mother Board, CPU, HD etc...

This is more like a bios problem if you ask me. If you added RAM to say a system that previously had 512mb then it sounds like the bios isn't updating properly or you have a dodgy stick that is not registering properly.

What could be the problem is if you are using 3 sticks @256mb I have heard of stabability issues in this area. Cure is to use a 512stick with a 256stick or just the 2 sticks in other words. Seems to be an issue with older boards.
I would hazard a more definate guess at a dodgy stick of RAM though...they'll work (sometimes) but register a lower value as in your case a 25% loss...not to supposed to I know but then theres a lot these Feckers are supposed to do and don't and vice versa...

try each stick in seperate set-up and see if one registers a lower value..if so change it, if not ..then...em..then wait for Atmo to appear...

First question: Does the BIOS say that you've got 768 MB of RAM when you boot up?

If you hit Win+Pause, how much memory does it say you've got?

How do you tell that memory is missing?

Jet_101 16th March 2004 01:50

Computer:
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+
1.67 GHz
768 MB of RAM
Geforce 4 128MB ti4600 I believe
anything else?

Smeggle 16th March 2004 02:38

Mother Board?

Try what I said though test each set of RAM individually that will show up which stick is giving you problems or should. Your comp should reset it self at each change all I can think you can do...

~ :)

ps. I suspect your board will probably be a K7 ? could be wrong though

Memory Test on system start up would be the first indicator other than that I think most BIOS features tell you and then theres other monitering software..

DJ Egg 16th March 2004 19:48

Yeah, it was the "when I'm idleing" bit which threw me initially.
Which led me to think it wasn't a faulty ram module, at first !?

But yeah, is it 3 x sticks of 256
or 1 x 512 + 1 x 256 ?
And are they all/both the exact same type of RAM?

Yup, motherboard & bios details are still required.
If you don't know the exact make/model, try Aida32

and answers to everyone else's questions would be nice too :)

umm, anyone seen Atmo?

xzxzzx 17th March 2004 22:37

But DJ, we don't know what is meant by "25% is always missing".

eleet-2k2 18th March 2004 00:43

really quickly, here are the possible problems you could be suffering from:
1) Your mobo doesntsupport that much RAM and therefore will only use the amount you see
2) You RAM is inserted in the memory slots incorrctly (not seated properly) thus making your computer unable to seesome RAM modules
3) The specific order of the RAM in your memory slots is incorrect (usually a problem with older boards), check your mobo documentation to see if you should place your RAM in order of increasing/decreasing size
4) Some of the memory chips or even a whole memory module is burnt out and thus will not work, try removing all the RAM and booting your computer with 1 RAM module at a time. Set your motherboard to disable quickboot mode (so you see your computer count up the amount of RAM you have, and compare that to the physical size the RAM module should be. if the #'s differ, you've got a burnt out chip. Remember that 1 MB = 1024 KB)
5) Some onboard motherboard feature is using your RAM space, ie: RAM-drives, etc...

MStar 18th March 2004 02:58

On a different perspective, My computer uses about 33% of it's 300mb of ram while it idles.

This is taken by various processes, as explorer.exe can take up to 20mb of RAM by itself.

svchost.exe uses ~8mb times 4 or 5 times.

The reason WinXP has min RAM requirements is because background processes use ram, Even though your computer appears to be doing nothing.

GqSkrub 18th March 2004 03:05

mumblesstupidbackgroundprocessgrumbles.

DJ Egg 18th March 2004 04:25

Yeah MStar... maybe we've totally misinterpreted the question?

I have 768MB of RAM. And for some reason, 25% is always missing. When I'm idleing
