"Oh, NO! Gas prices are going up!"
Morons. Two things:
Gas prices ALWAYS go up during the summer, and they always start climbing when the weather gets warmer. It happens every fucking year. And yet heads act like it's a new thing every spring. The news is doing top stories on the "skyrocketing" price of gas, just like they did last year. Stop driving SUVs that get 6 miles to the gallon as your only mode of transportation. SUV's are the spawn of the bitchiness this world has become, trucks with comfort and extra room. No. Trucks are like men. They are dirty, they fart, they're not comfortable with a lot of people. They are rough, ready, and can pull a friend's car out of the mud. SUV's are for men who have cushy jobs and wives who need a way to get thier kids to the soccer game. Get a fucking sedan. A big assed Oldsmobile with soft pudding seats and things on the wall so you can hang pretty pictures of flowers all over your minivan on coke. I hate SUV's, and I hate the people who bitch about gas prices. And the people who drive SUVs and then bitch about gas prices are the ones that need a good eye-plucking. |
It's what the war is all about.
I give it about 5 or 10 years before the rising price of oil forces some really big changes on this world, and the hardest hit will be the US. UJ |
not really, Alaska is one of the biggest oil resevoirs in the world. We still sell what we pull out of there to japan, but we don't pull as much from there as we buy from the middle East. In fact, everybody was bitching about taking out a couple of acres of Alaska's gigantic nature researve to put another pump in so we didn't have to "rely" on the Middle Easts researves, but the Eco-wing stopped that (with good intentions) quickly.
|
It's not really where it comes from or how much is available that matters, it's the rising cost of getting it that will kill the oil dependent countries, and take out most of the rest of the world in the process.
I'm not naturally pessimistic but this one worries me a lot. We're comming to the end of the oil bonanza and the days of cheap oil are almost over. UJ |
I read that the all time high in the U.S is almost $2.50 gallon. Right now it's 80.9 cents per litre(not gallon) at my local town. And litres are almost 3 smaller than gallons. So you have to pay 3 times as much. So the "huge" gas prices down there are only a couple cents less than our normal prices, it shouldn't even be mentioned in the news.

What's worse is that beer's gone up as a result of the budget. Allegedly. Having said that, I think a 30p increase per pint (to £2,80) is far beyond what might be called reasonable....
Looks like Tescos and drinking on the fields is in store again - something I last did when I was about half my current age! |
[Q]as we buy from the middle East. [/Q]
*Coughs* emmm don't you mean Steal? Also Oil is gonna get way more expensive ...get used to it or get a bike....or there's allways a Horse and cart...your gonna need them again soon..LMAO..he he he he he Watches patiently while it all falls apart ..your whole basis of your infrastructure is based on this dwindling commodity..what happens when your just a bunch of ignorant greedy sods, who think they can go bullying the world into your way of thinking,,,funny when the last fucking laugh is gonna be on you ain't it ... ha ha ha ha h ah aha ha ha aha ha haha haha aha ha hah ha ha ha hahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha |

Anyone who complains about the price of gas should either walk, ride a bicycle, ride public transportation, or (if you live in a rural area) drive a fuel-efficient car. Everyone knows SUVs are gas guzzlers. Even my '93 GMC truck gets better mileage than most SUVs.
BTW, I don't complain about the price of gas because I live in North Carolina, which has some of the cheapest gas in America. It costs more than it used to, but I know there are lots of people in America paying more, and people in Europe paying a LOT more. |
we seem to only get 2% of our oil daily from iraq. Funny how that is the entire reason we went to war with them. We would be better off taknig over canada, which gives us more than 2 times that amount. :igor:
Graph I made Source |
Actually prices are not really going to go down by much anytime "soon".
The real solution would hurt but not many people are willing to take the action necessary. BTW: Alaska oil reserves are dropping like everywhere else. This is why we are looking at other alternatives (such as fuel cell technology) and enhanced recovery options. Russia will soon play a big role in the intermediate future for the major energy consumers as well. Interestingly enough, there is still a significant proportion of coal left in the world. |
My step-mom has a 2002 Ford Explorer...It's been put to use during road trips (Packing all our stuff inside and hauling a full family), and it's got decent torque to haul heavy loads, but deep-down inside, I dislike my step-mom for the reason that she uses the Explorer for her daily driver...Although my dad occasionally puts it to duty at times as well (Getting wood, fence panels, etc. from Lowe's), it still hardly sees any working daylight similar to what one would use a truck with a bed for...Poor gas milage, lame breaking distances, medicore acceleration, numb steering...Everything the complete opposite of my dad's Focus ZX3... :D
Gas prices aren't entirely bad around here...Although it's worser in other parts of the country, and it's not exactly "cheap" either, it's nothing to seriously complain about for the moment's being... |

My point is... I live from paycheck to paycheck. Why should I have my wallet jabbed when it's not me that's abusing the gas? I'm not the one that drives a 3-ton SUV back and forth to work every day. I'm not the one that has a giant truck that hasn't so much as hauled groceries home from the store. The gas that I put in my gas tank is put to good use every single day. Why should I have to pay the price for everyone else's ignorance and greed? I've got an idea... Why don't we get the oil companies and auto manufacturers together and work out a deal? Let's get the oil companies to lower the price of gas by 1/4. Then, let's get the auto manufacturers to make SUVs 1/8 as fuel efficient as they are now. We'll see just how many people are cruising around in their SUVs two years from now... |

You really haven't got the point yet. This is not about where we get the oil or how much of it there is available, it is about how much it is going to cost. In my view the point at which trouble really starts is not far away now and, as Sarge has pointed out, the US is dependent on cheap oil like no other economy.
The change to a post oil economy is comming and unless managed carefully this transition will be catastrophic, in particular to the economies most dependent. In Europe we are used to high oil prices because of the tax on fuel, this gives European governments a mechanism to regulate the price through the lowering of tax (albeit at the cost of other services). The US has no such mechanism and is more or less forced to follow the only other route available, that is to forcebly take control of the sources of production. If you take a look at US foreign policy over the last 50 years then most of it is either concerned with maintaining supplies of cheap oil (Middle East, Venezula, Nigeria etc.) or limiting the access that other powers have over supplies (Russia in particular and communist states in general). This is literally a matter of life or death for the US, I don't particularly subscribe to the 'evil empire' view of America, but to some extent do blame the self centeredness that has blocked all attempts by more far sighted countries to make preparations for the changes that are inevitable. Given the position the US finds itself in there really is very little they can do except push for total control, or slide very rapidly into the biggest depression yet seen. UJ |

#2 I drive it ('98 Tahoe) to work because it's all that I have. Give me a smaller car and I'll drive that. I didn't buy it in the first place either, it belongs to my dad. I don't have the cash to buy a different car (if you want to buy one for me; feel free to do so). #3 Biking is out of the question, I work 20 minutes of freeway away from where I live. Bus is out of the question because I would have to get up two hours earlier. Don't bitch about people who you don't know. |
For some reason, this song comes to mind...

I heard that in Europe Gas costs a SHIT Load. Like, 3 bucks a litre... it was probably more than that.
|
I thought that this was the reason why Toyota and the Cali Government were building Hydrogen fuel stations???
Hydrogen fuel cell cars are set to debut in about 2-3 years to middle class citizens(if you got major cash you can get it now in cali only and drive it in cali only; no stations anywhere else yet). Plus, ALL major car companies are releasing Hybrid versions of their entire line of vehicles, half of which will be ready by this september"2005 car season". Until then, create routes that will save you on gas. For those of us who dont have 10mpg SUVs we should be fine until summer is over. |

An American Gallon is 3.786 litres, so that makes it almost $5 a gallon. |
Can I have some fuel at US prices, I won't moan about paying those prices ;)
The UK prices I can complain about though. |
People in the US always moan about how expensive everything is, petrol, CD, dvds etc etc, and yet it's always cheaper than it is over here.
|
Americans are just jelase they dont get ripped off as much as the rest of the world.
|
On our standards, it's semi expensive. Luckily, I can still nearly fill my tank with a ten spot. But on your standards, we pay less than you. Jealousy has nothing to do with it, we just liked it when gas was a buck a gallon.
You europeans who are jealous of our cheap gas need to find something to do with your time. It's cheap to you, it's not to us. But anyway, I don't bitch about gas prices because mine are a)relatively low, b) my car is small so I don't have to drop twenty five big ones to fill my tank, c) a whole tank of gas can last me a week and a half. |
You still don't get it do you ...
Just take a little time to think about the effect on the US when your gas prices reach the same level as ours, when you're paying $5 a gallon. This is set to happen soon, not in some mythical future that will never arrive ... soon. How will you manage in a few years time when oil prices are four times today's prices. UJ |
gas prices wouldnt bother me if i didnt make so little.
down the street gas is $1.65 a gallon... yes some may say overall that is low, but im in the south, where "expensive" used to be $1.30 (sarge can back me up with that...) on top of that, i make almost minimum wage, working part-time. i would gladly ride my bike or walk to work and school....however i do not have the time. work is 20min by bike, and school is 1hr by bike. and there are days when i literally am doing homework while getting ready for work. so i rely on my car alot. and i dont have one of those SUVs ( i agree, they are shit) i got a '90 camry. after insurance, gas, and school...i usually have about $30 for 2 weeks if im lucky....and then of course, i have a gf... |

There is no way that increases in wages will even remotely keep pace with the cost of oil.
Think about it. UJ |
have you noticed that when we were paying 45 cents for gas per gallon, bread was about a dime? Or did you forget Economics in your school curriculum this year? As the demand goes up, prices waver.
|
But bread is hardly going into short supply. When supply drops forever prices go up because the demand will always be increasing.
|
What Phily said.
With a finite supply (non renewable) then the rate of price increases becomes exponential. It is difficult to appreciate this while cheap supplies are plentiful, in fact the rate of increase at the start is less than the purely linear increase you would expect with bread. We are now way past the beginning and into the endgame, the increase in prices is about to hit the steep part of the curve. Watch it shoot up. UJ |
Like I've said before, Alaska has barely any of it's reserves in use. And we're selling most of it to japan.
We're not exactly running out. |
but the companies drill less... so there is less supply (theorically) and hence they charge more... those bastards
BASTARDS.. but i don't drive... so woo hoo |
Alaska is still a non-renuable source of energy so the point remains valid. It just delays the inevitable a little that's all.
|
by the time we're forced to have cars that drive on water, I'll be dead or too old to care. w00t.

wont somebody _please_ think of the children
