Now that 5.03 is out...

...what can we expect for 5.04?

Umm.. Nuke Library from Orbit? :D

Jump to File extra with Toast? :D

add path to ml?

inthegray 1st April 2004 11:27

well, i was hoping on mentioning it at some point on Winamp Unlimited, but here's the little i've heard rumor of:

improved implementation of WMV;
improved implementation of Media Info Editor;

yeah, that's not that much... you'll actually have to get a hold of someone important to get any worthwhile info.

i just need the damn trees in the ml .... :(

Veej007 1st April 2004 23:49

winamp is already perfect, portables aren't important!

unfnknblvbl 2nd April 2004 03:36

how about having it as an entry in the "Set Program Access and Defaults" thingie in WinXP Add/Remove Programs?

not that it needs to be there... it'd just make it look more important than... *shudder* Quicktime, RealOne, or MusicMatch

kiilu 2nd April 2004 10:03

new default skin!!! although it's nice already...

dun Dun DUN!

hehe, yep. as i've stated before, i don't have any access to information that isn't available to everyone else, if they look enough.

of course, you'll note in steve's plan (dated back to January) that he mentions 5.03 coming out "next tuesday." so all that stuff i mentioned could be completely changed by now.

I look forward to :

Customizable 'Play Count' options
eg. after 30 secs, after track finishes, etc

Some way to Identify and maybe filter duplicate files

Show file path as column

hint hint

gaekwad2 6th April 2004 22:42

Look what I found!

:p

macaroon 8th April 2004 08:45

gaekwad2 - I take it you're referring to the items above that also (coincidentally) occur in the wish list? :)

Well, what I hope for is mainly code optimisations to reduce bloat & CPU usasge & give some increased speed. I know Winamp is okay already, but it would be nice to improve it still :)

With increased hard drive sizes and RAM & of course the ever-increasing speed of CPUs, lossless codecs are becoming popular - especially FLAC, Shorten, WavePack (new version soon :) ) & OptimFrog, so it would be nice to see these supported even more.

i was waiting for that. if you ignore gen_ff then winamp is highly optimised and afaik gen_ff itself is well optimised but it's slowness is down to the fact there is a lot to do to make them work. that's why the minimum specs are a 500Mhz machine to get a decent speed from it.

as for those file types, most can be/are supported as plugins. that's why the system is there since Nullsoft can't be expected to do everything and people will then moan about the installer becoming bloated - basically you can never win :)

callmeace 10th April 2004 18:43

Yeah, that's true enough :)

Y'know, I think with these lossless codecs there will be just two that get adopted by people in the long run. After all - at the end of the day whichever one gives the best compression ratio to decent decompress/playback speed plus has another few features (good tag support, error control, seeking etc) there's not much reason to use another lossless codec.
I haven't personally made a choice yet which one to stick with, but OptimFrog seems nice.

With Lossy codecs I'm surprised there are still so many around, though I know a few seems to have almost dissappeared like VQF or whatever it was called, Liquid Audio & MP3+ etc.

But with Winamp, so long as the team keep themselves aware what people like, what is popular to use, then thats the only plugins that they could worry about including in the installer :)
I know for lossless there was a huge amount of people using Shorten (traders & the like) & consequently people have lots of files archived in Shorten format, and in the present day a lot of people encode to FLAC as the most popular I think.
The good thing with Lossless codecs is that when a new one comes along that you like better you can decompress your old archives back to waves & then recompress them with your new codec with no loss :) , the only work to do is find some way to re-tag all your songs :D I recently did that from an old shorten archive to OptimFrog - got the 702 mbs down to 460mbs :)

So perhaps for playback support, the Winamp normal installer could come with Shorten & Flac for the two most popular lossless formats?

gaekwad2 10th April 2004 20:54

Hmm, maybe they should have dropped mod and added flac instead ;)

Or maybe they should just replace mikmod with modplug instead?
Especially seeing it's now open source and is by far the more accurate engine.

Alltaken 11th April 2004 04:30

i have never heard of mod, what is it.

BTW yes flac native suport in Winamp would rock :D

Of course, native Flac support would be awesome :D

Koopa 11th April 2004 05:48

For one of the future releases, I hope, they will remove AAC support from in_mp3 and move it to in_mp4.

Damn dude.... do yourself a favor and buy a new computer!!!
:D

Seriously though, it could use a tad fewer CPU cycles..... but hey I'm not complaining it only slows encoding in Nero from 6.2x to 5.8x when playing back.

:)
