I would just do a complete reinstall, be sure that you are behind a firewall before hooking your computer up to the net and also be aware of what sites you go to. Some sites utilize flaws in IE to install programs like this, others just use common services like messenger to annoy you, a good hardware firewall/router will stop it all forever :)

omarello 15th May 2004 05:55

where can i find a good firewall??

Jay 15th May 2004 05:57

Bestbuy, compusa, fry's electronics, circuit city, wal-mart. I recommend hardware based firewalls.

Loveless 15th May 2004 06:02

Yes. And you also recommended a full reinstallation for a mundane tech support question without even requesting further details. So touch you.

the guy has virus' he has trouble removing, he asked for the best way to handle it, that's my opinion, deal with it.

Gotta love messenger spam.

If you're using Windows XP then the built in firewall should be good enough, probably just needs enabling. Should also check for spyware and adware using something like Spybot Search & Destroy.

What errors did you get when trying to remove the virii when in safe mode?

Smeggle 15th May 2004 07:39

http://www.grc.com/ shoot the messenger ....Also turn of your port 5000 DCOM Plus more stuff...check your firewall with the shields up yesy ...zone alarm is teh only one that can pass all the tests ..black ice is useless . you can also use a small prog he has for testing called obviously 'Leak Test'. checks to see if your firewall leaks basically..

Turn off port 5000 and have zone alarm/and or a hardware firewall and a decent V system that works like Panda ir AVG...forget Norton, McAfee heaps of resource hogging shite.

I tested Norton 2003 Av And Firewall solution last year. took me 3 days to download...installed on a clean 'test Machine' and ran for about 4 weeks. ample time to pick some nacty's up.
Sure enough come three weeks..system started slowing and destabalising.
Uninstalled and installed a 3 mnths out of date AVG. soon as I resarted ut throw up four trojans on the system. one I had installed my self from a known infected disc and the others of general surfing around.

Back-up/Format/Re-Install is the only sure way to get rid of the yon nasty that you have...

Actually Sygate is ust as good as ZA and is probably better. It's also nicer to use.

Myxomatosis 31st May 2004 22:17

I like sygate. It's handy how it shows all activity and Incoming/Outgoing speed.

Why is it absolute shit?

griffinn 1st June 2004 00:28

Have you tried not using the Internet?

(That would require someone else to print the forums out for you, but it stops all those annoying popups.)

the free version is anyway.
If it finds a virus in the course of its on-access scanner, instead of giving you the option of removing it there and then, it insists you run a full scan in order to fix it. If its a nasty virus that causes lockups, often you wont have time to run a full scan before it gets you.

MonKeyRum 1st June 2004 20:11

What Microsoft telling you that one of it's "services" could be used to spread a virus?
