Question concerning EAC

I am using lame 3.96 Final in conjunction with EAC and I am trying to set it to 320-kbps in regular stereo (similar to insane preset, minus the joint stereo). So if some one could provide me the command line for this I would appreciate it. I am currently making high bit rate mp3 CD’s for my new head unit, and I am putting multiple artists on each CD in separate folders to create a pseudo-disk changer. This preserves my collection from the trails of travel and the loss in fidelity is minor.

Copy the lame dll into EAC's directory, then start EAC and use Lame DLL as compressor, it has its own settings page. Should be easier.

As far as I know, once you use the --alt preset then it overrides other settings. You could just set the bitrate to 320kbps and not use any other command line switches but you might lose something else good done by the preset.

Big question though, do you need 320kbps? I use --alt preset standard most of the time when using LAME and can rarely tell the difference to the original.

I'd try
--preset insane -m s

If it doesn't work:
The --presets are shortcuts for long command line strings. If you can find the "long version" of --preset insane you could change its stereo mode.

@twilightseer: EAC's lame.dll page is just as limited as the one in CDex, ie it doesn't allow you to add command line switches.

@ Lostonline: on head phones, computer speakers, and other poor or marginal sound systems the differences are not as distinct. yet on my car stereo and my home surround system, both of which have high fidelity, I can tell the difference rather clearly.

@gaekwad2: You Rock ;), thank you very much.

now out of curiosity, I wonder why is the insane preset by default uses joint stereo; a feature typically utilized to save space when using lower bit rates. I find it odd, it seems to reason that if you are using the insane preset then most conservative notions have been cast aside and you are looking for the highest quality Mp3 can offer. any ideas?

Erm, CDEX provides alt-presets from the lame dll :)

I know the one in EAC doesn't, I thought he just wanted to set the bitrate to 320 kbps and the mode to stereo, which could be done with the dll options :)

That's fair enough, I can sometimes tell the difference on my car stereo and hi-fi system. Some people just use high bitrates for no reason even if they can't tell the difference. For archive I sometimes use FLAC to guarantee quality (but that is much higher bitrate).

Even at 320kbps the signal still has to be heavily quantized. So the saved bits from joint stereo can still be beneficial.

Actually using a special commandline switch you can go higher than 320kbps, you'll just get into trouble trying to play it back.

I'd guess the Lame devs did some listening tests with critical samples and decided that joint stereo sounds better.

If you've got enough time you can dig through old hydrogenaudio threads, maybe you'll find the answer.

And why is it that we still can't add attachments while editing?

Yes it does! :p

As usual with EAC they're not where you expect them but they're still there. :D

Ah yes, forgot it was updated to add the presets. I hardly ever use EAC these days :)
