Winamp 5.03a crashes after install

I've looked through the forums and done the complete uninstall a couple of times, even went through the resigtry and cleaned out all references to winamp.

When I install Winamp, it starts just fine when install is complete. It seems to function just fine as well. I can also quit and and restart Winamp. However, once I've logged out and logged back in, Winamp never starts again. When I start Winamp, the first thing that appears is the video window, but with the classic skin, even though I left Winamp using the new modern skin. Then the player window appears and a few seconds later I get the standard "Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close. blah blah blah." This happens starting Winamp from the agent in the system tray or from the start menu, with the agent running and without, or if double clicking on a music file.

One thread suggested this information might be helpful.

AppName: winamp.exe
AppVer: 5.0.0.3
ModName: winamp.exe
ModVer: 5.0.0.3
Offset: 00018142

Though not reflected here, I do have the patch installed.

I'm running XP Professional SP1, 2.53GHz P4, audio is built into the motherboard, the drivers call themselves Avance AC'97.

There are also other crash tips & fixes in the Troubleshooters thread.

Apparently not. I uninstalled again and installed in the Shared Docs folder as suggested in these threads. I still have the same problem.

In other news, I installed Winamp 5, no patch, on my Gateway laptop at home running XP Home Edition and it works just fine.

Please answer some more spec. questions.

What is your video card?
Have you updated your display drivers?
Do have any desktop utilities/enhancers (yzshadow, nView, Samurize, LiteStep, WinSpace, etc.)?

Well, I'm not at work anymore and won't be back in the office until Tuesday. IIRC, the card is an nVida, but I can't tell you which one. I haven't updated the drivers since the machine was built about a year ago. Yes, nView is running. I have dual monitors.

More than that I can't tell you off the top of my head. I'll go head and try updating the video drivers when I get back to the office and let you know what happens.

My suspicion is now centering on the display drivers. However, I could be wrong. Take your time and update this thread when you get back to the office. Good Luck :)

Updating the drivers seems to have done the trick. Thanks.

uhhhh

I think i am getting a similar problem,
I load winamp, i choose a song, i press play and hello winamp crashes i send that error reporting thing in every time. This has been a problem to me through versions 3.0+ to 5.03 anyone have a clue why it keeps crashing.
I can post more info if needed.

Running XP Pro (Latest Patches)
Geforce 2 64mb tv/out
MSI Motherboard

Sometimes winamp works sometimes it doesn't sometimes it will work for a while then it will crash. Now its constantly crashing, I bought the Pro version of winamp thinking the program has a time lock on it and winamp wants u to buy the pro well thats not the case. This just sucks, I like the features with winamp if the crashing would just stop.

Anyone any ideas?
