All that's missing is circus music...

The latest results of the GUI Olympics have come in, and the reaction has been quite astounding, as skinners, spectators and mods get sucked into what is all but a massive, and often childish, flame war. Might make entertaining reading if you've got nothing to do...:D

xenosomething 28th May 2004 20:00

don't forget to read this one......:D :D

Four words: massive sense of entitlement.

Whatever happened to the Skin Love?

tydogg 28th May 2004 21:36

I agree with what you've been saying on the forums, Stillwater, about the blame being partially the organizers for not really organizing too well, plus some skinners (seems like modern skinners) have the biggest egos I've ever seen.
Also, was there even a point in entering a classic skin? I assumed one of them would place in most usable after trying out some of the modern ones.

Mr Jones 28th May 2004 21:38

I think my views on the matter were quite clear,in the winamp thread anyhow,, prima donnas :)

"It's like a kind of torture,
To have to watch the show......"

flatmatt 28th May 2004 22:05

Well obviously the results are wrong, but isn't that to be expected in any contest involving modern skins?

inthegray 28th May 2004 22:43

i said some words

xenosomething 28th May 2004 23:10

what's fascinating is that all the winamp events aren't over yet.

i can imagine if the judges were planning on "saving the best for last" and now are pissed and will pick emp2 again just for spite.

:blah:

dlinkwit27 29th May 2004 04:14

I'm majorly pissed that I won't be able to vote for user's choice. that's the only freakin reason I signed up on that POS site in the first place.

Plauge, I added an argument for how D-R is more useable that EMP

StillWater 29th May 2004 09:10

LOL!!! :blah: I just saw this, posted by one of the guys who made D-R:

"fairly good" isn't "the best".
D-R is, there's no doubt about it...
We should've owned this category.
It was SPECIFICALLY designed for beeing able to replace the default modern skin completely without ever looking back..
I seriously do not remember the last time I saw an ego so over-inflated. Talk about trying to shit higher than your arse is! :D

Dark Ninja 30th May 2004 00:40

some of the stuff i could`nt download off there,

i liked the bunker winamp skin but apparently it aint there

dlinkwit27 30th May 2004 04:12

GUIO's comment page needs an edit button. :hang:

tydogg 30th May 2004 09:35

I think a lot of people are thinking that same thing, or at least they should be, some pretty crazy things were said over there..

ripe 30th May 2004 10:17

Dark Ninja, I just checked the Bunker download and it worked on the second attempt.

So the file is there. *phew*

If your download broke down you might still have a bad copy in your cache, if so, delete it before trying again ... (that's what happened to me)

ooohh...check out my new avatar:p

Xerxes 31st May 2004 11:12

I wonder if this will be the last GUIO to feature winamp...

Nini 31st May 2004 14:15

I read somewhere that a winamp classic skin almost won a prize.. is that true? ;)

can't open guiolympics site at the moment

Xerxes 31st May 2004 20:18

The GUIO server is corroding due to excessive vitriol...

Nope. The closest a classic skin has come is to come 5th in the Power User Category. Sound stupid? It is :D

Wait... How is that possible...?

Good golly.

If I was really really really bored, I might read all of that, but seeing as how I'm only a little bored, I just read a little bit. I didn't realize they had internet at such altitudes. Maybe they just haven't gone wireless yet and that keeps them tethered to the earth. Either way, I doubt anyone will get my cryptic jokes, and they're not very funny anyway.

Oh, just because I'm in the mood for five dollar words, I thought I'd add "hubris."

tydogg 1st June 2004 03:37

Hubris. Good word.
The fact that no classic skins were recognized for most usable but were for power user skins just proves how ridiculous the categories were, and how little the judges knew about them.

xenosomething 1st June 2004 03:50

the skin was might of been thrown in just so they didn't totally leave out all classic skins...but i don't know, it still seems weird.

StillWater 1st June 2004 07:59

The judges award every skin points, so I imagine that the top 5 are simply a tally of the 5 skins which got the highest combined scores.

If that's true, then that would mean that the skin in question was probably voted for by a few of the judges - and other classic skins quite possibly were too. :igor:

It's just plain stupid. What irks me the most is that they still won't admit that not stipulating the events (so that the site, the judges, the entrants, and the public were actually on the same wavelength) is something that they should have done. Even though it was clearly one of the major causes of the flame-fest, and even though seemingly dozens of people have mentioned it.

Nini 1st June 2004 14:32

If I was a "power-user" (we all are actually, aren't we ;)) I'd use the most useable skin, so where's really the difference? :D
I would also want a skin that's not too big and does not eat the cpu/ram ;) A classic skin is just per-fect :p

But I'm curious, which skin was that?

StillWater 1st June 2004 15:05

Well, "Power-user" - this was the way it was defined at the GUI site - means a skin that has loads of great features. In other words, to fit that description, it has to be a modern skin, because classic skins are all basically identical with what features they have.

I think it was "Corbet" from the Chinese team. It looked like a Breed skin, so perhaps the judges understood "power-user" to mean "a skin which is great, but is not not for people who are new to winamp"

tydogg 3rd June 2004 04:00

They just posted best themed, and still no love for the classic skins :(

But yet there were several Nullsoft Judges. :p

tydogg 3rd June 2004 08:31

Whether the judges know anything about the skins is different than them knowing the categories. The definition that was given for best power user was something like the skin that has the most extra features, but as I'm sure you know, all classic features basically have the same features. This means that the judges either were left to interpret the categories as they saw fit, or were given some strange criteria.

ripe 3rd June 2004 10:07

Does anyone know if it's possible to see a skin's download count on guiolympics.com??

pukkaboy 3rd June 2004 10:31

I don't think so. That site is so badly done. I could code a better site with 8 fingers tied behind my back.

Yes it is:

-go the home page of GUIO
-on the left, click "my account". This takes you to wincustomize.com, where you should be automatically logged in. If not, log in now I guess
-near the top are some options. Click on "my skins"

ripe 3rd June 2004 14:39

Ah, I see, thanks StillWater...

Did you have an existing wincustomize account before guio? and then use that same account on guio?

I've never had a wincustomize account, and my guiolympics.com login does not actually work on Wincustomize.com. It has never worked there since the day I signed up with GUIO. I had assumed this was to be one of the stated 'future benefits' of a guio account , and was yet to be implemented ...

Perhaps my account is broken.

StillWater 3rd June 2004 14:57

No, I didn't have a pre-existing account.

So I don't know why yours doesn't work

So, how does it feel knowing that if only you had submitted your skin in WAL format, with some rounded edges, you would probably have taken a medal?

In my opinion, there were only a very small handful of truly well-made winamp skins (4? 5?) in that comp, and yours was one of them.

Mr Jones 3rd June 2004 15:24

I'm still dangling the carrot in front of ripe to see if he wants to 'modernise' that skin

StillWater 3rd June 2004 16:30

They've published the tally boards, and it didn't even make it into the top 5. So it remains that the only classic skin to make it into a top 5 was in the power-user category. Insert string of expletives here. :igor:

ripe 3rd June 2004 22:39

ok, I guess I'll have to contact one of the admins about my guio/wincustomize account. I'm curious to see the download count - I've no idea whether it's 10 or 1000...

Thanks StillWater, I'm glad you liked Bunker :D

How do I feel?..
mixed feelings...To be honest, when I entered the contest I never really believed that classics could compete alongside moderns, (but I must admit I did get carried along with the excitement there for a while). They are different entities, and I think the main purpose of the GUIO is to promote the sponsors' latest software, so it makes some sense to favour entries that show the application to its full potential, ie freeform skins.

It is a shame, but it seems that classic skins are dead and buried from a promotional point of view. From a users' point of view I think they are still very relevant. I use winamp heavily, several hours every day, and I still prefer and use classic style skins. Winamp works best in classic mode. Smart people know this. http://forums.winamp.com/images/vb_bullet.gif

I don't feel I lost anything by entering, even if classics had no chance. The GUIO inspired me to make a new WA2 skin, which I wouldn't have done otherwise. I made Bunker specifically for the contest, and it's been mostly fun along the way.

Now then, Mr Jones seems convinced this "rounded edges" idea could actually work ....
