Overclocking a 466 mhz Celeron

i need tips on what i should use to overclock my good ol' processor... like good links or something similar

How far do you want to overclock? What are your goals? be realistic.

Your cpu is multiplier locked, so unless your board has 75/83mhz FSB frequency adjustments, forget it. That rules out pretty much any oem systems.

Even then, if the board does have the adjustments and you have pc100 sdram (or some damn good pc66), the highest fsb you're likely to be able to reach is 75mhz. 83 usually pushes the AGP/PCI bus too far to maintain stability.

IF you do reach 75fsb, the cpu will be running at 525mhz. You might be able to run it at that without better cooling, but dont count on it.

So you'll be taking a gamble on stability for an increase of just over 10%, which is insigificant enough that you probably wont notice the speed increase anyway.

I have to ask this 'cuz I've tried to look it up and can't seem to find it. What, exactly, is overclocking?:D

It's running your processor faster than it was made to go, can get more speed but there is potential for stability problems and at an extreme you can have overheating and destroy the CPU. I've never felt any need to overclock.

Thanks! That's been driving me nuts!(It's a short ride)

10% increase... eh....

I have OC'd my PIII 450Mhz to 504Mhz by increasing the FSB speed to 112Mhz. I have not tried to push it further for I dont want to burn out my system, and the ~10% preformace increase is satisfactory.I use noname 2x64MB PC100Ram chips, AGP Diamond Viper V770 Ultra 32MB (TNT2Ultra 165Mhz), and a shuttle Hot-166 mobo with a stock fan.

you could also try this webpage to see the success of others with a simular CPU.

But really when dealing with a slow processor like that, it's not really worth it, if you even do see the spped improvement. I've tried overclocked a P3 500 Mhz and it's really not a significant change.

the preformace diffrence is minimal but it can smooth out the frame rates however so slightly in games such as GTA III and MOH:AA,SH. The system was a HS graduation present 5 years ago, and I have had no complaints with it. Now that I have just graduated from college I am geting a new labtop by the end of this summer(idealy: AMD 64 (2800+~3200+), Mobile Radeon 9600,512MB Ram,60GBHD) and will probebly give my current system to my younger brother.

Way to go!

Get a massive cryogenic cooling system that's so powerful that it'd freeze your system to just above absolute zero. It'd be so cold that you'd either have absolutely no impedance in your electronics and would cause it to run at outrageous speeds, or it'd slow the electrons down to a halt, in which case your system would drop from 466mhz to about 2. :D

Cleanup 2nd June 2004 00:31

My Athlon 800 runs at 807mhz. Fun stuff.

sgtfuzzbubble011 2nd June 2004 00:46

My Celeron 2ghz varies betwen 1993mhz and 2025mhz. :p

SSJ4 Gogitta 2nd June 2004 00:51

My 1.2 Ghz PIII runs at 1.35 GHz. Seems to be as fast as I can get it to overclock to.

That's why I always buy from Fry's with an extended warranty. I've fried at least 2 Radeons and about 9 CPUs all exchanged for new units no questions asked. You can have a lot of fun with in-store warranty.
