Pc Bs.

I work at my dads store, and he insists on listening to sports talk radio all the time. What made news was Dallas Cowboys Coach Bill Parceals(sp?) said something to the effect of,

" I dont mean to offend any Orientals, but we have been working on a couple of what we call 'Jap' plays to suprise defenses in hope to catch them off guard"

now I understand that maybe using the term "Jap" might have been a little out of line, as well as refering to Pearl Harbor in such a way, but the guys on sports talk radio were drilling Bill for also saying "orientals": WTF?

Asians cant be refered to as Orientals any more? Orientals is just a more regional term; Indians and mideasterners all fall into the catagory of Asian, but not Oriental.
Do people not realize that all Orient means is east? If some one called me Occidental, I would not be offended!

Also, it seems to me it would be preferable to calling someone Oriental over lumping someone they see as "Chinese", as often times the person could be Korean or Japanese, which I find that many people do.

Also, oriental is not a bigoted term like, to quote Full metal Jacket, "Niggers, kites, whopps, or Greasers." Those terms along with a few others (wet-backs, gooks, hokey ect.) have no racially sensitive place in our vocab, but "Oriental" give me a friggin' break!

Newspeak at its finest.

Usage Note: Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Orientalmeaning “eastern”is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.
Odd. I myself am Asian, and I've never taken the word as offensive.

This is all part of Whitey's master plan.

Bazman63 10th June 2004 22:48

White is to Caucasian as Oriental is to Mongol. Because the first large scale contact between Caucasians and and Orientals, (previously, Turkey and the Middle east), was the Mongols invasion of Europe that got as far as Vienna.

So Oriental should be acceptable, me thinks.

(@ Shakey_Snake. It's not "kite" it's Kike, a derogatory term for a Jewish person. Nice post btw.)
