How To Install XP

I just bought a new computer, it's running WinME. I have my WinXp Pro CD and want to put it on instead.

I think I know how to put it on, but want to make sure. Also, I need to know how to create an XP boot disc. If anybody knows exactly how to put XP on, could you post the instructions.

if you're running Windows ME why dont you just put in the cd while its running and do an upgrade install. Also, afaik, with xp pro you can boot right off the cd.

Lol, I was reading that same article.

But the friggin Ibm is crazy. I need to create a boot disc. How do I do that?

You actually dont need a bootdisk, for me, when you have the cd in the pc when you boot up, it loads automatically.

CaboWaboAddict 14th June 2004 02:38

First format the hard drive. Bad things can happen doing an upgrade.
Boot off the CD.
Follow the prompts.
Most important: Do not remove the CD until the installation is completed and you have rebooted. Many times Windows will want to install things from the CD even though everything supposedly has been copied to the hard drive. If you remove the CD before the reboot is finished, the installation may not complete properly even though it appears to. This can cause problems with missing/corrupted files later. Voice of experience here... got this tip from a MS Help Desk engineer. This tip goes for all installations under Windows that require a reboot!

Hope this helps.

If your computer doesn't seem to boot up from the CD, you need to tweak its bootup sequence from BIOS.

For a modern IBM, you do so by pressing [F12] while it's displaying its IBM logo during startup. Then a menu presents a list of bootable devices to let you change the order of bootup. Just move "CD-ROM" to the top.

If [F12] doesn't work, press [F1] instead to go to the full BIOS setup. You'll have to navigate around a bit to find the bootup sequence setup.

Yes. All windows-installations from 95C will boot automatically if your bios supports boot from a CD-ROM, but the question is, is it enabled in the bios.

Guess only the one who owns the computer knows :)

Good luck on that one. I have wanted to buy XP pro for a time myself, and it seems I can get it pretty cheap of the rack as I have an NT 4.0 licence which can be used as the product to upgrade with a Pro Upgrade. Only difference is I have to insert the NT 4.0 CD while I install :)

Ya, that's the prob with my IBM, it loads automatically like someone said.

I'm gonna try with booting from CD, hopefully it will work.

DAMN! See my IBM doesn't start like my current PC does. The one I use now I can access the BIOS settings and stuff. With this IBM, it goes straight to the Operating System.

I put a disk in and it stops, because it's default is a floppy, not CD. So I have to make a boot disc. Or does anyone know how to access the BIOS on a IBM system?

OR how I can make an XP Pro floppy boot disk.

How do I create a boot disc. No matter how hard I try, I can't access the BIOS.

LMAO, it was a good PC for a good price.

Lapikas 14th June 2004 09:48

Good? And you can't even access bios :p
I had Ibm Aptiva years ago, and god did I hate it. But that was about 6 years ago, and I was complete noob then.
Maybe they've improved??

Nope. They feel everyone with a PC is a complete moron, so they make everything "more accessible". Meaning real PC users hate it.

i built mine with parts from teh internet. For the spec i wanted i saved money, but i understand that a lo wspec family pc cant be homebuilt for even near the cost of an ibm or [sacrelige]dell[/sacrelige]

Germ 14th June 2004 12:01

Nothing wrong with Dell.

mark 14th June 2004 12:35

besides god-aweful tech support and proprietry motherboards and PSUs that remove the option of upgrading after you buy?

in that case, yeah, great.

CaboWaboAddict 14th June 2004 12:41

Don't forget Dells' rebates that help you out with the price. They state in the fine print that you can't return it for any reason if you get the rebate. Dell sucks!
