GM and Ford combine to build FWD transmission

This is old news (4/19/2004), and I'm sure some of the well-informed car nuts may have already heard of this, but I found this looking through old news archives...

http://www.motortrend.com/features/n...s040420_trans/

Forget what a few individuals have done to put Ford 9-inch rear ends on their Camaros or a 350 in their '34 Ford...This is joint partnership; official stuff to people faithful to either company that don't believe it...

Next up: DaimlerChrysler sells HEMI designs to GM... :p

Man, that site was crammed full of a shit load of spyware!

I had 10 popups appear. Two said that I was initiating a secure connection. I close them and the next popups said they couldn't find the server. Gonna run Spybot now. Bye...

2 things I hate the most are FWD and automatic transmissions.

grumpyBB 24th June 2004 06:35

Old news, they've been working together on a RWD transmission for over a year

ElChevelle 24th June 2004 12:03

Didn't do that to me. And I'm running IE. :D

And I didn't know anything about that transmission. Goes to show you how far out of the loop I am. :p Interesting to see these two huge competitors working together to make products for everyone. Kinda cool, actually.

I was using a newly setup system, it found some registry exploits I guess. Spybot cleaned it up, now its ok. That shits still there though for anyone with a fresh system.

I love FWD and Automatic trannys. Makes life fun in the snow :) While everyone else was spinning and sliding my 3,000 lbs Dodge Intrepid was handeling very well. Now can I put that six speed tranny in my old 95 intrepid?

MidnightViper88 25th June 2004 21:28

I'd rather have AWD than FWD...Even though there's a tendency to torque steer because of power being sent to the front wheels, as least I have power sent to the rear wheels... :D

[edit] http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....&highlight=wrx Hehe... :D [/edit]

And sorry...As far as I know, only GM and Ford are in this, nothing on DaimlerChrysler...Your car is incompatable... :p

whiteflip 26th June 2004 05:13

awd eats more gas and torque steer is fun. under steer is what sucks. i wish i had the ability to choose between FWD RWD or AWD. that would be awesome. its not necessary, just cool.

why would you enjoy the car trying to rip the steering wheel out of your hands? that, in a nutshell, is the definition of torque steer. I think you are confusing oversteer with torque steer. and I've really got to ask if you have ever dirven a RWD car. I've never met someone who thought FWD was more fun after driving a RWD car.

CaboWaboAddict 26th June 2004 12:32

The only FWD car I ever drove that was fun was a massive old Toronado. It belonged to a friend. It was about a 1970 model and had something like 400+ CID. Seriously hauled ASS!

ElChevelle 26th June 2004 13:51

If you drive an AWD car, you're driving backwards:igor:

whiteflip 26th June 2004 21:15

ive driven FWD RWD AWD and 4WD. Ive driven Sedans Trucks SUVS lil economy cars and cars that are older than me. I know the difference between torque steer and over steer.

Aren't FWD cars more prone to understeer? :weird:

yes, FWD cars are prone to understeer, since they typically have a poor front-rear weight bias, however, it is not impossible to create an oversteer situation, but it ain't easy(using the e-brake dosen't count in my book).

whiteflip 27th June 2004 05:03

break hard then turn and gas it and that might create an over steer situation with a FWD car. Understeer is horrible though, sometimes scarry.

MidnightViper88 27th June 2004 18:49

Too much front-weight bias for the gas to help in over-steer, especially with the driven wheels pulling at the car...And you'd probably need alot of rear-end brake bias for that to work as well...

InvisableMan 27th June 2004 19:24

just because the people behind the wheels may have a heavy rivalry going doesnt mean the people behind the cars do :P

the hemi is a joke now. they're overusing it. they should just get it over with and put the hemi logo on every car they make

MidnightViper88 27th June 2004 19:27

I actually wouldn't mind DaimlerChrysler putting hemispherical combustion chambers in something other than their V8 engines...It'd be expensive, but imagine the power a Hemi I4 could make... :p

OH! A Hemi Viper V10! :D

sgtfuzzbubble011 27th June 2004 19:43

Damn, could you imagine the torque a Hemi Vortec 8100 would make? :igor:
