Networking (IPX Help)

I want to play some doom2 over the network (:p), and It says that the network needs to be configured for IPX. How would I go about doing this? I have NO idea how to do di this at all.

Thanks :)

IPX is a lower level protocol, like IP.

What operating system do you have? XP Home does NOT support IPX (I think).

Find you current network config in Windows and open the Properties

(XP pro: Control Panel > Network Connections)

There is a list of things "This connection uses the following items:" Hit Install.... Select Protocol. Find IPX and add it.

Repeat on the other system.

I'm on windows XP Pro.

Now, I can change this back when I need to, correct? I'm at a lan party, and wanted to play doom2 against a friend... Will this fuck with anything?
Is there a way that I can use IPX AND whatever I have going right now? (btw, I havent tried it yet. I'll go look at it.)

Edit:
The computer I want to play is running xp Home. Is there no software/nothing I can do to get it to use IPX?

Where is the list? I dont see it.

From the network Troubleshooter in windows xp:

Quote:

The IPX/SPX protocol is not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.
what does this mean?

Find your connection in the Control Panel, right click and select properties. A box with two tabs (General and Advanced) will pop up, it is on the General tab.

It won't fuck anything else up.

squakMix 26th June 2004 23:35

is there any way to do this for windows xp HOME also?

drewbar 26th June 2004 23:40

Ohh... missed that. No, XP Home only supports TCP/IP.

I though Doom2 could be played over IP though.

squakMix 26th June 2004 23:50

Not with the software I have. It only works with modem, "IPX - compatible network", and "Serial - Link".

griffinn 27th June 2004 15:56

FFS, Doom 2 is a DOS-based game. You need to (1) boot into DOS -- not by running the Command Prompt, not even by booting into Windows XP's command prompt mode, but actually be booting from a DOS disk / partition; (2) load the right DOS-based packet driver for your network card.

You'll need to do this same thing on all the machines you intend to play Doom 2 on.

Only attempt this if you're ready to google for stuff and figure things out for yourself. Or try searching for "prboom" -- it's a Windows clone for Doom / Doom 2 and it supports TCP/IP network play.

squakMix 27th June 2004 16:07

You assume I'm using retail doom.

I dont need to reboot in dos to play doom. In A hacked network-play exe that I have, it says that I can use "MODEM, IPX - COMPATIBLE NETWORK (It says this in the actual IPXSETUP THAT COMES WITH DOOM), or SERIAL GAME."

Your post said nothing about configuring Windows XP home for IPX.

You assume that I dont have a clue what I am really doing, and you also assume that I didnt search google before I posted.

griffinn 27th June 2004 23:52

Clues? You have yet to show you've got any.

I repeat - Doom 2 is a DOS-based game, hacked exe or not. (By the way, Doom 2 by itself supports IPX already so I don't know WTF that "hack" offers over what Doom 2 already can do.) You still need to boot into real-mode DOS and find the right packet drivers (specific to your network card) to load. Configuring Windows for IPX does not give you IPX support in DOS.

Your best bet is to run prboom instead of your little hack. It's a Windows-based clone of the Doom engine so it can use Windows' TCP/IP stack.

squakMix 28th June 2004 05:50

The network play exe is used BECAUSE OF THE FACT that configuring the real game is tough. You just put game specifications into the little .bat applet, and it launches and takes care of everything else.

When launching it literally says "IPX not detected. You need to configure your LAN to be IPX compatible."

Russ 28th June 2004 09:40

Regardless, you can't get IPX support in XP home. So you're screwed.

squakMix 28th June 2004 09:44

Yea, I figured as much now. I couldnt find an app online that would do this for me, so, I guess it's impossible.

MonKeyRum 28th June 2004 13:33

I don't know too much about the app but would anyone know if another protocol would work for him, like Netbeui? Or does it actually need the IPX to work?

griffinn 28th June 2004 17:01

Anyone who calls a .bat an applet shouldn't be anywhere near DOS networking.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record -- Go search for "prboom". It Just Works In Windows Because It's A Windows Clone For Doom.

xzxzzx 28th June 2004 20:54

I've played Doom in what appeared to be a DOS session while Windows was running. Worked fine. Maybe it was "Doom95".

Also, according to Microsoft, XP Home can be configured with IPX, or I'm just too lazy and didn't read the whole thing:

Its like banging your head against a brick wall isnt it Griff.

toqer 29th June 2004 15:45

Since ID released the source, a few people have modernized doom with tcp/ip networking, direct3d, ect.

ScorLibran 29th June 2004 16:22

I'm running WinXP Home, and I have IPX as an installable protocol.

I haven't actually tried it, but this tells me it's probably available though.
