Some of you may have heard of the Nissan Skyline, but what makes it so special? Today, I will explain and you will wonder no more. Hardly anybody outside of Japan knows about the quality of the Nissan Skyline. It might not be the best sports car of the world, but it definitely is right there on top with all the greats like Porsche and Ferrari - in terms of pedigree, as well as performance.

The Skyline is a legend. Usually, we associate that expression with companies like Porsche or Ferrari, which dominated the race tracks and have been around for decades. The Skyline has 40 years of race heritage, a historical record that Porsche can only dream of having.

Racing heritage

In 1989 Nissan debuted the GT-R to compete in the Japan Touring Car Group A racing series. The GT-R was undefeated in its first season. 4 years running the GT-R won the championship in the JTC Group A series, a record 29 wins out of 29 races.

In 1991, the Skyline's first ever Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race, the Skyline GT-R won the Group N class. At the Spa Francorchamps 24 hour endurance race 1991 the GT-R won overall beating Group A, and Group N1 cars. From 1991 -1997 the Skyline was undefeated in N1 endurance racing in Japan, winning 50 times. The only other manufacturer to even come close to such a record would be Ferrari and Porsche. History repeats itself today. Except today, the Skyline races against and demolishes great cars like these:

The Skyline was so successful, other manufacturers did not want to compete with it any longer. So to keep competition alive, the competition was split into 2 categories in 1992. Class GT500 was a restriction of 500hp and Class GT300 was a restriction of 300hp. Thus the Skyline was given the name "Godzilla". Even after the class split, the Skyline still took both the manufacturer's trophy and the privateer's trophy for each year after 1993-2003.

The RB26DETT is a marvelous piece of work. It can widthstand thousands of RPMs and last days without exploding. Can it be because it's a race engine put into a stock production car? yes! That's right, a race engine. The RB26DETT is one of the only engines in the world that is engineered for the track and thrown into a street car. Other examples only come from Porsche. Nissan tested this tiny 2.6 litre engine to produce 1600hp. The Japanese Government was no fun at all. They had made Nissan detune the output to a miserable 280hp, or so they thought. If you were to dyno a Skyline on an AW dyno it would show 335hp. That's because Nissan under-rated the hp output, and that 335hp is obviously no where near it's stress point. Now the 1/4 mile times make actual sense.

http://www.gtr.co.uk/html/images/tec..._ps_torque.gif

blue line: under-rated claimed 280hp red line: actual dyno reveals 335hp@6200RPM and a nice flat torque curve (white bar). This engine plus Nissan's ATTESA E-TS all wheel drive technology is what makes the Skyline a legend.

Production Nissan Skyline

The R34 GT-R Skyline held the track record for the fastest mass produced car to lap the Nürburgring Northloop, the most demanding racetrack in the world. The record was broken only by the Porsche 996 Turbo, a $110,000 car. The Nurbergring is fucking huge and very complex. Here's a satellite photo of the ring:

The GT-R is a beautiful car. This is supposed to be the next GR-R. Nissan's CEO says that the production model will not change much from the concept. He goes on to says that it will have at least 400HP twin turbo charged and will sport electric motors to eliminate turbo lag. Great idea Nissan, technology is the way of the future. I'm pretty sure they will get rid of that glass in the middle of the hood and the roof. Nissan says it will attempt to take marketshare away from the Porsche 911 and GT2 cars.

Ah, I praise the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R V-spec. Great handling and stability under high speeds. I believe it's the best 4WD car out on the market. Better than a Toyota Supra in performance. It was my winning car in Gran Turismo 2 with 740HP Stage 4 Turbo Kits. Won meself over 200 races!

New one looks like a mini sized Chevy Corvette. Especially the rear end. I agree that they need to get rid of the window in the middle of the roof. Excellent tribute Starbucks!

My mates cousin had a GTR R33 N1. beast of a car that was minus the radio and air conditioning but had light weight body. He sold it to some racing team in sydney and bought a GTR R32 godzilla.

bad point about the car:
Fuckers always want to steal the GTR badge off the car because of its street price ($500)

great car though, wish i could afford one.

Don't really like Japanese cars, but I do like the Skyline more over the Supra...Too heavy and doesn't like to corner well...

RB26 > 2JZ :D

And aren't Skyline GT-Rs really more like a RWD car anyway? :weird: I heard that the front differential only engages power when there's a loss of traction at the rear wheels, like the Porsche 959's transmission...

And putting a Skyline GT-R in the US market would be cool, but Nissan has plans for that only until 2007...3.5 years from now is a long time away, and 400-hp will be an almost-obsolete number for the sports car market...The new Z06 is supposivly due with a 500-hp treatment, a lighter and more powerful Viper GTS coupe will be debuted by then, Honda hopes to have a more powerful NSX replacement by then, and it's target car, the Porsche 997, is already due out soon, with upper "S" models having 380-hp (And who's to say what the Turbo model will pack)...

Meh...Nismo R-33 400R is my absolute favorite...

Yes, but 2JZ can very well hold it's own against say every other mass produced motor in the world. Toyota's 2JZ is a fucking beast. Toyota's chassis is kind of heavy, but that doesn't stop it from achieveing .98g laterals.

Yes, but you have to remember it's not always about horsepower. The 335hp Skyline can lap the ring almost 20 seconds faster than a 520hp GT2 Porsche. The car just loves to stick to the ground. The next GT-R should be a road hugger like it's predicessor and this time there will be no turbo lag as well as a flatter torque curve. If the next Z06 wants 500hp, they're going to have to try real hard. The LS2 already has non restrictive air flow and increased engine size and only makes 400hp. I don't doubt they can do it, but it will be closer to 450hp. I suspect they will achieve 500hp by adding more cubic inches. All speculation at the moment.

As for the next NSX, heck the current NSX-R can lap the ring 2 seconds faster than the GT-R, and it only has 290 real horsepower. Keep in mind Honda's NSX technology is 11 years old, and so is the chassis. HSC should out perform it in every way possible.

I prefer cars that can handle well on the track. When you add horsepower, you actually have a suspension to back up the acceleration.

Smeggle 28th June 2004 00:03

It also out handled most modern race cars of the day as well!!
A test by a Formula 1 driver on an Irish race Circut - result was driver was faster through the bends than a Jordan race spec car! It was in and out of the corner faster, steadier through the corner and held the line with none of the 'Drifting' associated with race cars.
faster than most of those heaps you mention as associated in the same league - fact it pisses all over them ....

All I know is, the Nissan Skyline is a ricer magnet (second only to the Honda Civic).
