What?

How come Generated skins arent considered "Real" skins? How come they are based on originality when they are generated?
Why does the reviewer rate the skin the same as a normal one, when really they should be looking at how the image was incorporated into a skin design?
Why arent they shown as a new skin submission?
Why cant someone search for generated skins?

What kind of encouragement is:

Feel free to quit any time, before we decide we've had enough of them.

Can someone fill me in?

Mr Jones 28th June 2004 07:10

This is best answered in the classic skinning forums.

>>How come Generated skins arent considered "Real" skins?

Any fool can sit on his ass all day long and shit out generated skins, heck it takes about 10 seconds to make one

>How come they are based on originality when they are generated?

Don't understand your question

>Why does the reviewer rate the skin the same as a normal one, when really they should be looking at how the image was incorporated into a skin design?

Show me one generated skin where it looks like the author spent any time considering where the image is sitting in comparrison to the rest of the gui

>Why arent they shown as a new skin submission?

We have better skins that people have worked hard as that we'd rather show.

>Why cant someone search for generated skins?

Same reason.

>What kind of encouragement is....

If you were to be reviewing skins for this site and you'd seen your 50th skinner skin in a row because someone thinks it's great to fill the database with crap, then you'd probably get a bit tetchy

Serial skin generating idiots, and I can guess who your talking about here, are just taking the piss.

Did you also know we flush the generated skin section once a year, last time we dumped about 10,000 or so skins.

Great response . This just leads me to the obvious then:

If generated skins are such shit (I, nor anyone I know have ever used one, and I agree, generated skins are shit), and you cant search for them, and basically nobody downloads them, why have a whole section of your website dedicated to them then?

I mean, since generated skins automatically have no originality (as in buttons, layout, etc.), and the originality of the buttons, layout, etc., dont play a leading role in the way the skin "works" (if it had, than the skinner wouldnt have just generated a skin, or thought that the generated skin looks nice), why are they rated in it? All of the generated skins have the same buttons, layout, etc. as the rest... just because of the fact that they ARE generated shouldnt detract from the overall score of the skin.

Generated skins are fine for personal use, and if you want to share them it's fine if you put it on your own web space, but its not really fair to clog up the winamp.com servers with them. That's my view anyway.

It's a fair point you make there, there were long and hard discussions about should we/shouldn't we have sections for people to submit them.

I think in the end they were left in, because at the end of the day we want Winamp to be for everyone and for everyone to take part in the winamp experience, or something like this, I wrote an article for winamp.com many moons ago saying as much.

We left them in, but with a few conditions, no search, not in new section and the bottom 10000 or so flushed every year.

There'd also be a greater influx of bitching.

And since then, there have been dozens of people that have come to the forums asking "where has this skin gone? Where has that skin gone? It used to be on the database, but now it isn't anymore!" Invariably, the answer was always "it must have been a generated skin, and was one of the 1000s that was ditched in the major database 'spring-clean'".

The large amount of people that have come looking for generated skins shows just how large a proportion of the public uses and likes them. So we can almost count ourselves lucky that there have been any restrictions put on them at all! :/
