Winamp stops playing music after 1 1/2 hours of playing a looped playlist.

Every time I let Winamp run for longer than 1.5 hours straight, the songs will just suddenly stop playing.

Winamp version: 5.03c

PC Specs:

AMD Athlon 2400+ @ 2.0ghz
512MB DDR 333 Memory
NVidia NForce2 Chipset w/onboard sound, and LAN
AGP 8x Video (NVidia GeForce FX 4000 @ 128mb DDR)
USB 2.0 and Firewire
3 WD Hard Disks at 100GB Total: (Two 40GB(IDE-1 Master/Slave) and one 20GB (ON IDE-3))
Windows XP Professional SP1

------

I'm suspecting there is a memory leak somewhere.. I play Quake III Arena heavily on this PC with all the graphics turned up too.

siebe83 29th July 2004 17:52

Try upgrading to 5.04.

Are you using any 3rd-party plugins? (like mp3pro, mpg123, any extra dsp or output plugins)

DJ Egg 29th July 2004 18:51

So you're playing Q3 at the same time when this happens?
Or is the pc idle?
What are your Power settings? (hard disks/hibernate/etc)
What other software/processes are running concurrently?

Are you using DirectSound Output in Winamp?
And is it configured correctly?
What file formats are you playing? (mp3, wma, aac, ogg, internet radio streams, etc)

But yes, try a clean install of 5.04 first...

WordWeaver 29th July 2004 22:48

Our computer specs are nearly identical to RocketGib's, and it sounds like he has the same problem we do. We have a lot of music files on our computer, and therefore have long playlists. Winamp will play it for awhile, then suddenly just stop playing. It doesn't seem to matter what you are doing at the time... I can be using Microsoft Word and simply typing when it does it. It's not that it shuts off... it hangs. It goes to 0:00 and then refuses to play. When we shut the program down and try restarting it, it still won't play. The only way to get it to start playing again is to restart the computer, and then it only plays for a little while before it just stops playing again. there is no error message. We play only mp3 files and don't generally listen to internet radio. When you go to restart the computer, it has to shut down the mp3 files that winamp got hung up on before it shuts down the computer. When you press control/alt/delete, the file manager doesn't register on the applications that winamp is still running, though winamp.exe is still in the processes. Even if you shut down the processes by hand, it doesn't seem to make a difference. Restarting is the only solution we've found, and its only a temporary fix. Anyone have any idea what is going on, and how we can fix it? I would really like to figure this out, because after being a Musicmatch user and getting a lot of lag on the system from that program, I am overjoyed to realize that Winamp has none. I don't want to have to go back to Musicmatch, but if I have to mess with configs and download a bunch of plugins just to get a simple music program to run, I will. User-friendly is user-friendly.

PS: This is a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP1, and a fresh install of Winamp (as of today) with no plugins.

DJ Egg 30th July 2004 03:18

A fresh install of 95%+ bug-free Winamp 5.04, as released today?
Or the old buggy 5.03, which was still available earlier today?

Also, have you read this sticky thread?

Although it doesn't sound exactly the same, you should still post system specs and a HijackThis Log.
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs

And make sure you've also configured DirectSound Output (as per the instructions via the link in my previous post)

[edit] aah crap, i just replied to a damn crosspost [/edit]

RocketGib 5th August 2004 18:15

WordWeaver,
I'm getting the same exact results!

DJ Egg,
I installed 5.04 cleanly and it still hangs. In fact, it hangs more often than it did with 5.03. Hmmm?

campusanis 5th August 2004 18:30

I have exactly the same problem. But it's not only Winamp that won't work anymore then, every music (also in games) stops its work...

siebe83 5th August 2004 18:33

To all: please answer the questions asked in this thread, and read the suggestions.

campusanis 5th August 2004 18:43

Well, ok: I have been using word, playing a game and the PC has also been idle once, but always the same.
I have configured the DirectSound-Output (which I always use) as DJ-Egg has suggested.
I don't use a 3rd-party-plug-in and play mp3s and CDs.
And of course I have run Spybot, AdAware and anti-virus already...

siebe83 6th August 2004 08:36

For campusanis' system specs, see here:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....02#post1430702

I'd suggest to post a HijackThis log:
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/HiJackThis_Last.exe

Save the file as .txt, and attach to a post.

Also, please take a look at these threads:
(from the sticky)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svchosts] svchosts.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [svchosts] svchosts.exe

Sdbot-N backdoor Trojan

Go to Services Control Panel, and set svchosts to disabled.
End process for (both instances of) svchosts.exe (NOT svchost.exe) in Task Manager, then checkmark the entry in HJT, along with these other ones below, and click "Fix Checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A6A178BE-7177-4E63-81CB-905F7DD9B5D9} - (no file)

____________________________________________________________

The following entries are optional.
If it was up to me, I'd disable them. The choice is yours...
Note, they are all useless resource hoggers.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Programme\QuickTimeWin2000\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINNT\UpdReg.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Programme\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

I've no idea what these two are. Do you?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cFosDNT] C:\Programme\1&1 Programme\cFos1\cFosDNT.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Reboot.exe

The only other possibilities are:
some weird issue with TotalRecorder (though I doubt if everyone experiencing this problem in this thread has got TR installed).
Or an issue with the latest Creative drivers, or one of the heaps of (mostly useless) processes it loads at startup (but I see that some people in this thread have nForce onboard audio chips, not Creative sound cards).

Re: Downloaded Program Files...
again, I haven't got a clue what some of these are,
so if you don't know what these are either, then you can let HJT fix the following:

O16 - DPF: {6A060448-60F9-11D5-A6CD-0002B31F7455} (ExentInf Class) - http://metaboli.wanadoo.fr/components/ExentCtl.ocx

After fixing everything, try another clean install of 5.04
and then apply the out_ds tweaks again.

Talking of which, DirectX 9.0c has just been released,
so it might be a good idea to upgrade...
but get rid of that trojan and other crap first.

campusanis 6th August 2004 13:35

Thanks for the analysing, I tried my best to do everything you suggested (most of the entries you didn't know are just crap I installed once), but I couldn't find an "svchosts.exe" entry in the taskmanager. btw: What do you mean with "System Control Panel"? I have got a German Windows, so could you please explain it to me? ;)

Campusanis

DJ Egg 6th August 2004 16:22

Under WinXP:
Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Sevices

Not sure if that same menu exists under Win2k, but this should work:
start > run > services.msc

Disable svchosts (it should be listed)
(right-click svchosts > properties > startup type = disabled)
then delete c:\winnt\system32\svchosts.exe

Be sure not to confuse it with svchost.exe, which is a legitimate windows file.

Also use HJT to fix those 2 svchosts entries.

If svchosts is not listed under Services, then just fix it with HJT and delete the svchosts.exe file (move it to some backup folder before deleting, just in case...)

Then reboot.

RocketGib 6th August 2004 18:01

Winamp is currently locked the song/crashed. I just scanned my system.

DJ Egg 6th August 2004 21:11

Hmm.. that's quite a messy startuplist...

Well, apart from one or two potentially iffy ActiveX controls in the Downloaded Program Files folder (016 - DPF entries), the only main spyware issue in your log is the two WildTangent entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain

O16 - DPF: {65E7DB1D-0101-4100-BD66-C5C78C917F93} (WTDMMPVersion Class) - http://install.wildtangent.com/bgn/partners/aolim/install.cab

You can fix those two entries with HJT, though I strongly recommend you install and run (one after the other, not both at the same time) both of Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware6 to get rid of WildTangent and any other possible spyware/malware on your system.

You can also use HJT to fix all those 016- DPF entries, except for the msn, yahoo and mcafee ones
(note, all DPF ActiveX controls are loaded when you open Internet Explorer... and seeing IE loads with Windows Explorer...)

This useless (broken) entry can be fixed as well:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Apart from that, again, you also have a lot of useless resource-hogging processes loading at startup.

It surely can't be a good thing to have all of Winamp, MusicMatch, QuickTime, RealPlayer AND iTunes all running at the same time.

These are the processes that, impo, do NOT need to be loaded at startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\jusched.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eMusicClient] C:\Program Files\Winamp\eMusic\eMusicClient.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SFS6] "C:\Program Files\Steganos Secure FileSharing 6\sfs.exe" /booting

(what the hell is ^this^ anyway?)

O4 - Global Startup: APC UPS Status.lnk = ?

(^this^ appears to be broken anyway)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

(not sure if this p.o.s. needs to load for iTunes to work or not, but hey you installed it... my recommendation: use ml_ipod plugin instead)

campusanis 7th August 2004 15:18

OK, I have something here that works for me. It's not really a good solution, since I have to do everytime it stops, but since it's the only one...
I just play around with the hardware-acceleration slider and the hardware-acceleration checkmark in the DirectSound config-tab. Then sometimes it works. I will try to find out, what exactly I have to do to get it to work.
So does that mean that it has something to do with the acceleration?

Campusanis

DJ Egg 7th August 2004 17:01

Well, it does say "may cause problems with broken drivers" next to 'hardware acceleration' in out_ds config.

At a guess, it's all related to bad sound drivers and/or DirectX installation.

btw, have you cleaned up your startup list yet?

Does it still happen if you temporarily disable ALL startup items ("O4" HJT entries)?
(the only essential ones are systray and explorer)
