emm I know this place needs add support to some extent ...but I been getting a lot of these warnings from spybot lately ..see attached.

Avenue A and it's body are known naughties...

just wondering as i thought this place was against the spyware stuff?

hmm...

Started using Firefox...haven't had any spyware since then.

ScorLibran 10th August 2004 20:13

Yeah, I don't think spyware/adware knows what to do with Firefox/Mozilla, Opera, and the other "alternative browsers", so they tend to be much safer from those kind of "uninvited intrusions".

But I've been here a few times over the past few months with IE 6, and I haven't gotten any red flags from Ad-Watch (the blocking component of Ad-Aware).

It could be false alarms you're getting from SpyBot, perhaps?

ryan 10th August 2004 20:29

Could be already installed spyware causing them.

Smeggle 10th August 2004 20:34

Don't think so scor...it's a lot more srticter than adaware in my opinion...

I run adaware and then spybot...

Adaware says nothing there but spybot will show a few things ..generally it's picking up on a hkey_local_machine setting I purposefully changed.

I must figure how to get it to ignore that. it's a known issue where spyware or a browser hijacker can be loaded via I.E. I'll fish the key out but the value ends with 1003 just change it's value to any thing other than that but not the same as any existing value which if I remember leaves 4,5 and 7..

I finally found how to boot port 5000/5001 yay..known doorway for trojans!

Switch of port 5000/5001

I just did mine and it seems to be working fine no problems showing ....

Your choice if you want to try it or not. I assumes no responcibility :D

(BOT)
that place has the same add's showing ...I see those about a lot...must be setting in spybot that will just block em quietly...

anyone know of it?

:)

smeggle, why is it that every single time i checked for the last 6 months or so since installing spybot, there have never been any updates found? Are there actually no updates or is something screwey going on?

True. But with many things higher sensitivity can mean higher propensity for falses (...but not always). It was just an idea anyway (and not a very accurate one, in retrospect).

I tested out SpyBot and AdAware for my own needs several months ago, and also noticed SpyBot catching more threats than AdAware. Suspecting some false alarms, I left some of the items red-flagged by SpyBot (that were not caught by AdAware), and then locked down my firewall completely to see if anything "bounced" (i.e., spyware or adware trying to "phone home" as I worked). I never got one.

But then again everyone's needs are different. I do think SpyBot is a better program for more people than AdAware is, but my preferences for AdAware are just based on my own requirements and "operating style". And many people also use them both. Wise choice, in my opinion.

(Yes, I paid for AdAware Pro a while back and I have to justify my expenditure somehow. ;) )

(Yes, I paid for AdAware Pro a while back and I have to justify my expenditure somehow. )

good enough reason as any ..I use both simply because there is a couple of things that spybot misses that adaware catches.. mainly in the registery clsid's check.

Apart from that Cwshredder and hijack this catch any thing else.

put a router up front backed via za and avg av with panda software online active scan as a double check..reckon i'm kinda safe ...can never be to sure though....

not with microjerk I mean soft ;)

Hmmm, I'm going to install SpyBot again just to check things over. Haven't run it in a while. No reason to not use two anti-adware/spyware products.

I'm running a NAT router (with all ports stealthed), and I was using Kerio Personal Firewall up until this afternoon, when I made a troubling discovery. I did several dozen internet performance measurements with two online measurement services. My ISP provides 3.0mbps down and 256kbps up. With Kerio running, even with no advanced rules defined, I was getting a max DL speed of 800 kbps (or so). Turning it off would immediately result in 2600 to 3000 kbps download speeds. With 100% results. And I have no idea why.

But I figure with a NAT router I don't need the software firewall as much anyway, mainly because I have a stack of IP filtering rules for both directions of traffic in my router config. And I do use nightly scheduled tasks to scan for spyware/adware, viruses and system integrity as well.

If I'm wrong I can always reinstall Kerio. Until then, I'm enjoying 3 times my previous surfing and download speed. :)

(Or maybe I should re-test with Sygate...)

Smeggle 10th August 2004 21:15

try using za as your bckup firewall...lot less pull on resrcs...

course all else fails ....I still have one last option..Hacker Eliminater..and that monitors any process trying to run without your express permission...it also 'remembers' what you run or start yourself, registry changes...and even on lowly 56k I notice little performance drop...

Awaits satelite broadband avidly...:D

It's just a "tracking cookie." Not really a spyware program or anything. Probably used by the ads at the top of the forums. You can add avenue A to the block list in Firefox's Preferences (under Privacy).
