World Vote

From slashdot "As an experiment, a group of engineers from around the world created us-election.com. People over 18 from around the world can vote on the site. Its amazing the difference between U.S. viewpoint and world viewpoint. Kerry leads on the site overwhelmingly, while Bush is ahead in the U.S."

I voted for Brown, and from looking at the results, I'm a definate minority in the world :)

Yes, but if you lived in the US, would you vote the same?

Due to the US's fantastically fucked-up electoral system, there's practically no point in not voting tactically (i.e. for Kerry).

So in that case the site is kind of flawed, because it's unclear as to whether they want you to vote for your preferred candidate, or who you'd vote for if you lived in the US.

I wonder what the results would be like if the US used IRV...

People outside the US see and hear alot more than we do beause the media concentrates too much on stupid crap instead of the serious issues.

Sad because most polls on the election tell you they are usually 1,000 people or less. Considering there are millions anyone can survey the right area and get the right result and if the news organizations keep people thinking things are swinging up and down wildly it keep people watching more news to see what's going on.

Outside the US most of the news deals specifically with the issues like our war in Iraq, our economy and the such. You don't get all this fluff news.

Myxomatosis 16th September 2004 21:35

I'm not surprised. At all.:(

Of course you have to remember that in other lands they hear ALL about the dirty things going on over here and very little about whats going on there. It's a two way .. err, one way street anywhere you live.

On a radio talk show from Calgary, AB, CANADA this morning I heard a guest who had just returned from Iraq, where he had been involved building and fixing things, like toilets in schools. Quite soon he'll be going back to built an Internet cafe, among other things.

Anyway, according to him the media tells the story of the 25.000 who are opposed to the American presence, even to the point of armed resistance.
What the media does not tell is the story of the 25.000.000 who are quite content with the American presence, because they have never had it as good as they do now, even with the terrorists killing a good number of Iraqis.

Of course this is probably not the truth, as I can't imagine the media would not report on schools being built, people being happy and going on with a more or less normal life. This just must be right wing propaganda...or is it?

I wonder if those 25.000.000 Iraqis had the chance to vote in this poll, how would they vote?

People outside the US probably want the US to fail, and cast their vote with that purpose in mind.

CaboWaboAddict 17th September 2004 02:18

^Why the fuck is that? Seriously.

Myxomatosis 17th September 2004 03:31

I would have to agree, all you see is the negative in American news.

whiteflip 17th September 2004 08:45

If we had a digital multiple vote system that someone on the forums was talking about earlier I would vote for the American Party (although I dislike their non-universal stance on civil rights) followed by Kerry.

That system was nice. Pick the candidates you want in order. If your favorite gets the least amount of votes than they are dropped from the list and the person next in line on your vote is counted so on until someone gets a majority.
