Can I start server with a 192.168.... IP?
Hi
I've got a WiFi internet connection with a Linux server with static IP. My computer is behind this server with 192.168.100.3 IP. Could I start a server on that machine or do I have to start it only on that server. (I have no acces to that server because it's installed by my inet provider :( ). Thanks for answer. |
You can have a shoutcast server on any server, that IP is an internal address for your use only. If you want outsiders to listen then you have forward your portbase in your router config to the PC with shoutcast and provide everyone with the WAN IP link that is listed in my signature, like this http://WANIP:PORTBASE/listen.pls

The IP 192.168.100.3 is an internal IP address that is visible to your local computer or any other computers within that network. Think of a large office where every computer has an IP in that range - they can see each other on those IP's and any shared data or streaming offered up on that IP would be available to anyone within that network. If however I am not on that network I could not see that computer and would not be able to connect to that machine. However, what you could do with you could do is have that Linux server set up a "port forward" whereby all traffic that it receives on a certain port would be forwarded your computer. So if that Linux server had an ip of 66.1.123.456 you could have the server on every request of http://66.1.123.456:8000 forward to http://192.168.100.3:8000 within your local network. If that makes sense. [edit]not to self, type faster[/edit] |

I hope I understand networking quite well so I know what internal IP mean :) ... but I'm not allowed to change that Linux's settings to forward my 8000's port transfers. So there is no possibility to start a server for me I guess? (But it will still work within internal IP's adresses :)) Thx |
