Important Security Update for Firefox Available

Quote:

Questions & Answers:
  • How does this security vulnerability expose the user?

A malicious hacker who could trick a user into saving a file could delete files from a user's download directory.
  • How serious is this vulnerability?

While this is a potentially severe security vulnerability, user interaction is required to trigger potential harm. This security update is also another example of the Mozilla Foundation identifying and fixing security vulnerabilities before they are exploited by malicious hackers. This type of security vulnerability is very different from cases where a hacker could take advantage of a vulnerability to obtain valuable information from a user's computer.
If you already have Firefox 0.10 (=1.0pr) installed, you can go to Tools, Options, and choose Advanced, go to Software Updates and choose Check Now to grab the patch.

Hey, that autoupdate thing is pretty neat

It upgraded all my extensions yesterday as well. :)

Jay 2nd October 2004 14:14

isn't this more of a breaking news type thread?

gaekwad2 2nd October 2004 14:22

Yes, but many GDers ignore anything outside their home turf. :/

Wow, that was fast.

And I mean both the release of the update, and the updating process.

GqSkrub 2nd October 2004 14:37

does that mean that 0.9.3 is ok?

zootm 2nd October 2004 14:39

I seriously doubt it. It just means you can update 1.0PR automatically. Updating 0.9.3 is a matter of downloading 1.0PR.

Then how do 0.9.3 users get the security updates?

gaekwad2 2nd October 2004 17:53

By downloading 1.0PR (the updated version already contains that fix).

You could try to install the patch from this site, but since 0.9.3 contains other vulnerabilities as well it wouldn't make too much sense even if it works.

They're different versions, not different products.

Well, I intsalled 1.0PR over 0.9.3. Now the "Send Link.." under my mail icon is gone, which I really liked.

nybergh 2nd October 2004 21:24

This starts to feel like good ol' Windows Update already :D

If it was an extension, you probably need a new version. I'm not sure what you're referring to, though.

cyu 2nd October 2004 21:52

It is recommended that you always uinstall a prev. version of firefox before you install a new one.

That feature is part of 0.9.3. Right-click on the menu bar (the blank part), choose 'customize', and drag the mail icon from the box (see attached file) to the menu bar. Click on the mail icon. In 0.9.3, the drop-menu has 3 choices, "Read Mail", "New Message", and "Send Link". In 1.0PR, "Send Link" is gone.

So far, I haven't needed any extensions.
