occasional pops/crackles

i have a problem with the sound quality of winamp that i'm having trouble tracking down. basically, i get seemingly random pops occuring that deffinitely aren't in the recordings. there seems to be no relationship between when these occur and volume or cpu usage although i THINK they're more likely to occur near the beginning of a song.

they deffinitely don't occur if i use windows media player, but i'd really rather get back to winamp ;)

i have been using directsound output (and yes i've been through this thread already) but i've also tried otachan's asio plugin. i've also been using the standard nullsoft mpeg decoder but have tried otachan's latest version of mpg123 as well. none of these alterations have had any effect to the problem. which to be honest i find a bit surprising, but maybe i'm missing something here.

i'm running winamp 5.05 under winxp sp2 and i have an audiotrak prodigy 7.1 soundcard with the latest drivers. the system is an athlon xp 2000, 512meg.

any suggestions to get this sorted would be much appreciated,

thanks

mark

What motherboard do you have?
Envy24 based cards like the prodigy are known to have problems with via and nforce chipsets.

You can try this tool to change PCI latencies.

i'm running an abit kd7, which is indeed a via kt400 based board.

i'll take a look at that tool, although as i said i've not been experiencing this problem with windows media player so is it likely to help at all?

cheers for the info
