If you can get hold of one, then they are not a bad amusement.

White Raven 4th December 2004 23:12

I've wanted one since they came out, every year's been a disappointment. *Sigh*
You should get them one. If they like dragons, Drakengaard is a good one.

PS2 is an awsome console. great game selection. plays DVD and CDs.

whiteflip 5th December 2004 01:19

PS2 is fine and dandy but an XBOX is just twice as cool. It weighs twice as much, has twice as little market share, and has twice as many controller ports. Plus its twice as powerful if graphics were an issue. Also every major game seems to have a sequel.

Psythik 5th December 2004 02:43

Play PC games instead.

toejam07 5th December 2004 02:46

Go with a Gamecube instead. $50 cheaper (with a packed-in game!) and much better games, especially for younger gamers, although there is plenty of more "mature" stuff, too.

Myxomatosis 5th December 2004 02:47

Lol @ your sig toejam.

If the person is computer litterate, a new computer is always cool. If not, then I reccomend the XBOX. I have a PS2, not that many games that I like for it though. Oh yeah, GTA, nevermind.

xzxzzx 5th December 2004 03:11

Yeah, a PS2 makes a good gift. It's great for DDR games, in particular.

Atmo 5th December 2004 03:32

Yeh, the ps2 makes a good gift for a family, as there's tons of PS1 and PS2 games that are suitible for the younger kids, and plenty more for the older kids/adults too.

There's nothing wrong with the XBOX, but there arent as many games available for either generation.

deeder7001 5th December 2004 03:48

i've heard somewhere, forgot where, that you could put linux onto an Xbox and basically turn it into a computer or something like that.

Mattress 5th December 2004 03:54

I like my PS2 except that I haven't had much freetime to play it since the summer :(

Sony used to offer this, but they have discontinued selling in in North America. I know Xboxes can be modded, but whether Linux can be installed, I don't know.

Yeah, theres a mod chip that overrides the XBOX into running Linux. Then you can make a folding cluster with it. Anandtech did it!

PS2: http://blackrhino.xrhino.com/
Xbox: http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/index.php
Xbox: http://gentoox.shallax.com/

these are the distros that i've found so far for consoles.

Mattress 5th December 2004 04:23

Why would anyone want to run linux on an xbox or any other game console for that matter?

Myxomatosis 5th December 2004 04:37

It makes a relitavely(sp) good for its price system. it's cheap, if you want a folding system.

I dissagree, i think going about it like that is a total waste of money.

The XBOX sells for around au$300, add $50 or so for a mod chip and you're up to $350. If you need to pay someone to install the chip, that's probably another $25 or so.

For the same outlay you could grab a cheap atx case & 250w psu, an XP2000+, all in one socket A board, 256mb of pc2700/3200, and a 40gb hard drive. No monitor, mouse, keyboard, but a folding rig can run headless and be controlled via vnc or with a kvm switch.

A setup like that would be at least 3x faster for folding, and would only consume about 1.5x the power an XBOX would consume.

Make sure you get three controllers! (and the switch if its PS2)

ujay 5th December 2004 11:41

My grandson has a PS2 which he loves dearly, don't think you can go wrong getting them one.

Can any one point me at a site that explains how to make DVDs that will play on it, I remember something about having to use a particular type of blank, but can't find the site again.

The new slim PS2 is pretty cool, but I hear it can have issues with some games.

The XBox is more capable, and the GTA games get ported to it...but do they have better graphics on the XBox? Anyone know?

The GameCube seems quintessentially worthless to me. Everyone perceives it as a younger-audience box, and it seems to live up to that. If I were you, I'd go for either an XBox or PS2 for a gamer...unless you're good with a computer, playing PC games can be VERY confusing.

deeder7001 6th December 2004 01:18

gamecube isn't too bad. but it is limited on it's game selection though. it's good if you want to save space too.

whiteflip 6th December 2004 02:34

GTA on the box has faster loading times and is more crisp.

The Xbox sells for $150 in the US, or about $190 AUD - and I don't think you need a mod chip to get Linux installed. However, for folding purposes, it's still not that great of a deal.

Hah: I just glanced at the title and thought it read: "it is good choice to buy sp2 as xmas gift?"

The PS2 has a myriad of good games for both the young and old. If you do deiced to purchase a PS2, here are some quality non M rated games.

-Ratchet n Clank Series, much revered series; with great game play and great humor, I have enjoyed all its three plat formers quite thoroughly.
-Viewtiful Joe, a through back to old school side scrolling with beautiful cell shaded graphics, and a innovative game mechanic its certainly worth checking out.
-Jac series, another quality platforming series, not quite at the level of greatness as RnC but certainly fun non the less.
-Crash Nitro Cart, very similar to Mario Kart, cute simple racing fun.

Though for the # of siblings involved, the gamecube is a much better option, esp, the MarioKart bundle (great party game, simple playing machanics). The GC comes with 4 cont ports and library has some quality games such as..

-Mario Sunshine, it’s a Mario game need I say more.
-Super Smash Bros. Melee, excellent fighting game feat Nintendo charaters, permits up to four players.
-Mario party, as the name infers its designed for a group and offers a plethora of simple but fun mini games to beat or get beat in.
-Donkey Konga, a rhythm based game that can be quite addictive, esp when playing with friends.
-Animal Crossing, the girls should get a kick out of this one, the best synopsis I could give it is The Sims for Kids, though it may not be doing it justice.
-Viewtiful Joe

ultimatly if its for the 10th grader then get the PS2 but if its for the fam the the GC is the better choice.
