Yesterday was UN International Anti-Corruption Day

UN: 150 Sex Abuse Charges in Congo Peacekeeping
Quote:

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations (news - web sites) is investigating about 150 allegations of sexual abuse by U.N. civilian staff and soldiers in the Congo, some of them recorded on videotape, a senior U.N. official said on Monday.
Saddam got $21 billion from UN oil program
Quote:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein's regime reaped over $21 billion (11.4 billion pounds) from kickbacks and smuggling before and during the now-defunct U.N. oil-for-food program, twice as much as previous estimates, according to a U.S. Senate probe.

Proof that UN sanctions did little but starve the people of Iraq. Real bummer.

As for the Congo thing, you just can't get the staff these days...

Man's closest relative (pygmy chimpanzee) is about to die out in the congo.

The U.N. is just about worthless. we need to kick them out of the country and make them fund their own shit from now on.

zootm 10th December 2004 17:57

What do you mean? It's not like the US funds them...

Wolfgang 10th December 2004 17:57

zootm... I remember reading about that. But that was five years ago and I think I remember they were given a deadline. The US paid up something like an hour before the deadline.
The US probably owes the UN money again now though.

Fair dues, I only had that drawn to my attention recently, I assumed it was new.

Edit: Ha, just saw the date on that article. If anyone knows where the follow-ups to this are, please tell me.

I have a question: if the US troops in Iraq had been involved in widespread sexual abuse. Would your response have been "just can't get good staff these days..." ?

godoncrack 11th December 2004 04:19

the un oil for food program was just that
oil for food
not saying all of it went to that
but a majority did
which saddam passed out, free of charge
which the iraqi people were very thrilled about

Mattress 11th December 2004 04:30

do you have any articles about how wonderful the oil for food program was?

Probably, yes. It's not like I was serious, obviously it's a horrendous crime. I'll be outraged when (1) the claims are proven and (2) those responsible face little or no retribution.
