Should I be worried?

I was talking to a couple of friendsa who are also wannabe hackers. Anyhoo, there were saying they might have some fun with my machine as port 21 is open, and they've got my IP address.

Do I need to be worried at all?

NJK 19th December 2004 12:00

i assume you have a firewall running?
well close port 21 if you are worried so much.

there is still a long way between talk and actually doing things.

and are you sure these kids are friends???
friends wouldn't say these things.

mark 19th December 2004 12:04

if theyre your freinds, then no. otherwise get a firewall and antivirus

mysterious_w 19th December 2004 12:36

One is a friend, and he has since told me he won't, but the other just might. I've tried googling to find out how to close port 21, but all the resluts seem to be for linux,. Any help?

gaekwad2 19th December 2004 12:45

Try shields up to scan for open ports.

Atmo 19th December 2004 13:22

Port 21 is used for FTP. Unless you're running an insecure FTP server , there's not much they can do to it.

Personally i feel that when someone says "im a hacker" then all that you know is that the guy is trying to catch attention... so, dont believe them.
Maybe THEY should feel worried and better to go to a psiquiatric or something to calm they suffering.

A dangerous hacker will never advertise himself as such.

Timbaland 19th December 2004 17:46

As soon as he said hell hack you, you should have hit him in the face with a lightbulb.

billyvnilly 19th December 2004 17:52

whenever i hear i am a hacker, i think...oOo you know how to download porn for free.

mysterious_w 19th December 2004 18:35

MidnightViper88 19th December 2004 18:40

Next time you see your friend, whack him in the head with a monkey wrench and be like "pwnt! LOLZ!"

...or something along those lines...

mysterious_w 19th December 2004 18:44

I tried logging into Hotmail, and my secret question now is 'Who pwns j00'

Fuck.

MidnightViper88 19th December 2004 18:46

Strip your computer of any internet connections or power supplies...

I'll come by your house and loan you my Winchester 30-30...

Talbain 19th December 2004 20:41

Why, praytell, is your hotmail account so important to you? I only use hotmail for stuff I know to be spam (or suspect to be spam), don't you have a more secure mail server you use?

SSJ4 Gogitta 19th December 2004 20:45

Isn't hacking concidered a crime of terror now? If you have the chat-logs, call the police.

whiteflip 19th December 2004 21:19

Hacker and script kiddy are two different things alltogether.

Talbain 19th December 2004 23:29

Hacking a hotmail server isn't exactly a feat of genius or anything. They're about the least secure as far as servers go. It's pretty much Microsoft's policy to always make sure that everything they create has security holes you could drive a mack truck through. It's become tradition now, so I don't foresee any improvements.

Hacking a hotmail server....
Oh yeah... you're clueless.

MegaRock 20th December 2004 01:31

I'm with the rest. Someone that really truly knows how to hack sure aint going to walk around talking about it.
