How else to edit/save cursors?

My Microangelo trial ran out a long time ago... and unlike the version I had on my old computer, this one won't let me use it at all anymore. Are there any freer programs that would allow me to make new cursors? I really prefer to have nice custom cursors with my skins if I can. What do you guys use?

I use Animation Shop, but I have the distinct feeling that it doesn't allow for quite the diverse color palettes that Microangelo does. So if anyone has any suggestions or a link to an older trial of Microangelo (I guess I could even grab it off my old computer when I get home this weekend, though), I'd also like to know. :)

[cough]*crack*[/cough]

LuigiHann 14th February 2005 07:50

I don't do crack, Mr Jones. :p This is a substance-free dorm.
I wish photoshop let me save .cur files... I can make cursors easy, it's just a matter of filetype :hang:
I looked around, and man, crackz-type sites seem virussy, eh? Who knew hackers were so good at... hacking. :P A lot of them don't seem to have the one for microangelo 5.59b yet anyway... meh

Ok then...[cough]keygen[/cough]

Isn't there a photoshop plugin for exporting .cur files?, I could have sworn there was, or maybe it was .ico files I'm thinking about, lemme have a look around...

Thanks, looks like that does what I need.
Edit: I added a cursor to my Trigun skin.

StillWater 15th February 2005 11:54

Great! That should come in handy. I can't stand MicroAngelo's crappy interface. Doing it all in Photoshop sounds great! :)

LuigiHann 15th February 2005 15:01

I miss Microangelo's crappy interface. :( I used to do almost everything with the line tool. Now I never use the line tool at all. Or animation.

StillWater 15th February 2005 15:16

Yes, but don't forget that that was before you began being enlightened by the limitless world of photoshop :D

Mr Jones 15th February 2005 15:20

I don't miss anything about making cursors in either Microangelo, potatoshop or any other package that you might mention.

'twas always my least favourite part of skinning, that and actually getting started.

More like the animationless world of photoshop. :p I also liked how relatively easy it was to make lines and shapes that anti-aliased against other shapes and colors, but not against the transparent area. It worked very well for the type of stuff I was doing.

I use Icon Art The free version works amazingly for me. Although the UI is not the most intuitive ever, it does its job once you figure it out. it may be easier to draw the picture and copy/paste it in. Also, setting the hotspot can be kind of tricky. You have to input the x,y coordinate of your hotspot. But hey, it's free.

Actually, I think that Imageready, which comes with Photoshop, has some sort of animation capabilities (intended for GIFs, I think). I've never used it, but it may be worth trying out.

The version of MicroAngelo that I had never had anything like anti-aliasing. Maybe I had a very out-of-date version - it was pretty terrible, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

tydogg 25th February 2005 02:54

The only thing I use ImageReady for is animation for my skins. That might explain their low quality, but you can do it.

LuigiHann 25th February 2005 03:01

All the anti-aliasing in my Teen Girl Squad skin was done in Microangelo. >_< That skin would have been SO much easier with photoshop, but I still think that photoshop has made me too lazy, so the skin wouldn't have been as clever as it is now. (knowing my recent trends, the buttons would probably rotate or fade rather than warping, for example) But that's a moot point. I think it's worth noting that all my cursors so far have been made in microangelo (except the trigun and power glove ones) and I think they've all been pretty good.

mike-db 25th February 2005 03:19

Yea i have to say im very pleased with my cursor for my skin.
Im suprized at how well it came out.
