Such a young death...

A friend of mine died today while running during track probably because of heat stroke. Today was a rather warm day for ND (about 70'f). He was a 4.0 student, president of his class, and was only 16. I've known him for a few years at school and through SADD. He was one of the nicest people I know, always willing to help anyone who needed it. The school I graduated from and he attended is really small (about 30 kids per class) so everyone is generally really close.

Sucks that this happend so someone who had so much going for him and at such a young age.

Brian.

"The school I graduated from and he attended is really small (about 30 kids per class)" We would'nt call that "Really small" around here... That's rather average or big.

Did he have a previous problem with health? Was this completely unexpected? Why would they be running/working kids so hard they'd die of heat stroke!?

class:
1. A group of students who are taught together because they have roughly the same level of academic development.
2. A group of students or alumni who have the same year of graduation.
3. A group of students who meet at a regularly scheduled time to study the same subject.
4. The period during which such a group meets: had to stay after class.

dork means 2.
Do you mean 3?

D0rk, sorry to hear man, we had a guy in high school die of a genetic heart flaw his senior year. It was tough on the whole community.

Sorry about 30 kids per grade. No he was in perfect health. They wouldn't be running kids so hard that this would happen. From what I have heard so far is that they were just doing laps around the track and with track just starting not to long ago it wouldn't have been a strenuous practice.

70'f? that's a texas winter! where are you from?

Sorry dork :( i've had 3 deaths in the family in the last 8 months, it sucks to lose someone you care about :)

Leonhart 8th April 2005 11:11

I have lost friends and people i have cared for, i know how it makes the heart ache.

Widdykats 8th April 2005 11:33

I'm very sorry about your friend. It seems very odd that a young healthy sixteen year old died while doing laps.
Seventy degrees isn't heat exhaustion weather per se. I hope they at least see if he had undiagnosed heart problems, or whatever may have caused his too early death.

Schmeet 8th April 2005 14:10

This sort of thing happened to one of my sister's friends. He was playing football and just died. It was a heart deffect he had which he never knew about.

Sorry about your friend.

ShyShy 8th April 2005 15:58

My condolences to your friend's family and to you and your friends. A death at such a young age, just leaves you with the question "why?".

And like what others have said, it does sound like there was an underlying medical issue that contributed to his death.

zootm 8th April 2005 16:51

Very similar thing happened to someone in my year at school. It's dreadful stuff, hope you're taking it ok dude.

PulseDriver 8th April 2005 17:38

Same ere' the son of a collegue of my father died under football (soccer) training... They said later that it was a cardiac failiure that he was born with, and the time of occurance was just a co-incidence.

I have also lost a friend in a car-crash (1998) which I were a passenger, but me and the last man (also a good friend of both me an him), we were like "The Three"... the dagger in my heart is still digging after that.. loss.

One more word for this thread: Word!

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, d0rk.

When I was in junior high a girl in my class was murdered. I had met her briefly like a day or two before she was killed. She seemed like a really nice and happy person at the time, it was pretty weird.

yenerich 8th April 2005 19:23

My condolences to you and this guy's family.

Haha, I was referring to 3 :P. My bad I guess.

Psythik 9th April 2005 00:23

Wow, I'm really sorry about the loss, however, I just don't understand how someone could die of heat stroke in 70° weather; it must have been from a medical condition or something else. Anyhow, best of wishes to ya, and I'm glad that it seems that you are coping with this quite well. :)

ElChevelle 9th April 2005 16:10

Heat stroke is actually quite common in the younger set while running.

STOP RUNNING!!!!

You know, it makes you wonder, had he lived, if he'd have had other heart conditions later in life.

Nat_roy 13th April 2005 06:20

Sorry to hear that. A hard thing to deal with. My condolences

d0rk 13th April 2005 09:28

Thanks everyone. Funeral was today. I wasn't able to go because an hour before it started the church was packed. I knew it would be so I had a friend call me (who was part of the procession) if it was full.

A lady I worked with told me that the main street through down was backed up for 10-20 minutes while everyone drove to the cemetary.

Estimated 500-600 showed up.

Brian
