My friend got terminated from AIM?

He called to find out why his account had been cancelled... He told me they said something along the lines of something he said in IM..

He said the only thing he could think of is when he was talking to someone and said something about how AOL sucks...

Wow.

Mr Jones 20th April 2005 07:17

Don't believe it, have had many many convesations on AIM that mentioned how much AOL sucks, come to think of it some were with AOL employees who work here at Nullsoft...

Print 20th April 2005 07:33

That's 'cause AOL does suck... :D

bgesley 20th April 2005 08:07

well recently it was made public that:
A) AOL contains ownership of anything that is sent over its AIM network(s) (but what the user said still belongs to the user?)
B) AOL does not in any way monitor or log any type of the activity over its network(s).

cmercy was kicked off AIM a month or so back because someone reported to AOL that a racist remark was made. The part of the conversation was made emailed to her. She called AOL and found out that it was a similar screen name that did the racist remark.

If AOL is really parsing through it's customer's conversations that closely and ejecting the likes of "AOL sucks" and racist remarks, then they're downhill slide will only accelerate.

You can only fuck with free-speech to a very limited extent on a publicly-used communication platform, beyond which you'll censor yourself out of business.

You see, Bill doesn't care so much what we say on MSN-M. ;)

*gasp* If the AIM folks managed this forum I guess I'd be banned, huh?

PulseDriver 21st April 2005 00:06

Actually I belive there is a mod which is taking care of what ppl say about AOL though :p but you will probably have to go lenghts to get banned.

bgesley 21st April 2005 01:29

We could probably say anything about AOL and nothing would happen. But then again we could say the worst possible things you could think of and eventually...someone would go to Itunes or MusicMatch.

AOL killed and ate a jewish baby's heart.
AOL rapes children.

AOL doesnt monitor conversations. i mean that would require a giant computer server capable of literally connecting all the computers on the earth toget...

the first question I have is, if he got terminated, was it because he was in an AOL chat room or in a private discussion? I have been terminated from AOL chat rooms before, for seemingly no reason at all, but I have had some pretty pissy discussions in private and never seen any notice or restriction from AOL.

morgado 21st April 2005 03:13

AOl can terminate everyone ... we still got MSN, Yahoo, IRC ...
Also, we can do as many IDs and e-mails as we want. AOL sucks. Too good they've are almost closed here in Brasil :D
