Problem with radio list/invalid page fault, sound quality on 98SE
I had Winamp 2.9 on my older 98SE box and was having trouble with the radio portion of the library so I upgraded to 5.08 last night. I still get an error when trying to open the radio list in the library. A popup box says "can't open table". Then I get:
WINAMP caused an invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL at 017f:7800e20b. I can see everything else in the library. It is just the radio portion that won't load and that is what I use Winamp for and Spinamp. I love the stations from both of those. I noticed in this latest version of Winamp that I have something called winamp.com.music and winamp.com.video. The videos play but the music will not play. Plus, the sound is terrible. Winamp 2.9 has much better sound on this old box with a fantastic Yamaha sound card. In fact Winamp 2.9 sounds much superior on 98SE with the Yamaha card to Winamp 5.0 on my XP box with a crappy Soundblaster card. So, why does 5.08 sound so bad on this older box? Should I go back to 2.9? I have Direct X 8.0a on this box and use DFX to enhance the sound. So, I don't know why the sound is so bad. Anyhow, how do I fix the problem with the radio list not opening? One other thing, is the winamp.com.music and video new to 5.08? I have 5.0 on my XP Pro box and it doesn't have these items. Thanks. P.S. Why can't I log in on my 98SE box? I am logged in on my XP box. I don't get an error message when I log in on the 98SE box, but when I go to preview/post this, I am told I am not logged in so I log in again and the same thing happens when I try to post. |
Did you do a clean install of 5.08, or did you just install it straight on top of the old buggy 2.9?
For sound quality issues, see here: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....26#post1212926 Note that the default Output plugin on Win9x is waveOut, whereas it's DirectSound Output on Win2k/XP. FYI, The winamp.com music and video sections were added in 5.04 |
No I had not done a clean install. I just did following the instructions you pointed me to. I had to install DFX before I got good sound. It is amazing the difference DFX makes.
I have one problem remaining. My favorite Shoutcast Radio station gives me a "service forbidden" on this new install on 98SE box. It suddenly started doing that about a month ago on my XP box. Fortunately, on the XP box, I can access it via my Spinamp plugin but I don't have that on the 98SE box yet as I uninstalled it for the clean install. Why does this one station Southern Rock give me a "service forbidden" error? Thank you for your help! It is neat to be able again to listen to Winamp radio on both XP box and 98SE box at the same time. I have sound all over the apt that way as the XP box is in the living room and the 98SE box in bedroom. The sound is far superior on the 98SE box with the Yamaha card. I hate the Soundblaster I have on XP. Tinny sound. |
