Is this stuff any safe? I've been reading about it on Erowid all day and have come to the conclusion that it's

1: Legal to buy (in some cough medicines (I have a list of the ones with the most and safest DXM in them)),
2: Induces a pretty good high (with few unpleasent side-effects), and
3: Is FAIRLY safe to take (The amount for overdosing is pretty high, and physical dependence on it is rare/non-existant).

I'm not thinking about really taking this; I had a friend that took some today and was just inquiring about how "good" (overall) this stuff is to take.

For those of us who dont live in the rehab clinic, what is Dxm?

Safe is a relative term.

The problem with the cough medicine in bottles is the disgusting taste they put in them to keep kids from chugging whole bottles. The problem with all of the cough medicines (losanges, pills, liquid...) is the inactive ingredients that can harm your body - stomach, liver, etc. Many people use various techniques to extract the pure DXM from the various syrups.

The high can very greatly even with the same dose and it also can come at random intervals. It is very easy to have a bad trip with DXM, especially if you are taking the "pure" extracted stuff. The problem with the extracted stuff is that it changes into DXO (or some three letter thing like that), and a DXO trip is extremly different then a DXM trip. DXM is often found as a cheap substitue for other drugs, mainly in extacy pills or sometimes as cheap acid. Some of the trips can be similar to that of an acid trip with full visual hallucinations and completly altered perceptions. Other trips can be like an amphetamine and some are even like smoking weed. From what I know, it seems to have to deal with wether or not it is "pure"(extracted) and how much of it has changed into DXO.

Yea, the ingredients in the DXM medicine stuff are very VERY important (as stressed on erowid). A common way to filter out pure DXM in losenges is to dissolve it in water and then syphon the water out of the cup (leaving the in-soluable DMX at the bottom).

It's not something to be underestimated/unrespected - no drug is.

Because of the popularity of meth labs, law makers are trying to pass a law in which pharmisists would record your purchases of the stuff.

Yah, DXO does not cause hallucinations, but it doesn't always cause such a euphoric state. DXO usually took longer to take effect and the effects varied widely. With DXM they were usually always more of a hallucinogen, but with DXO it was almost random. I'm sure it had something to do with the quality of the DXO and quantity of it that had actually changed into DXM. I also think that DXM has the better effects, because DXO was not consistent enough.

My experience with cough syrup was more or less 'meh'. It just made me tired, and stuff was mildly more entertaining than usual. (The cough syrup was prescription)
