My motherboard and some extra RAM..

OK, here's the deal.

This is my motherboard:

And the link to the mothorboard information page..

Anyway.. this mobo supports both SDRAM and DDRRAM. I have a 256MB stick of DDR already on it, and i'm looking to get some more.

However, I have two 64MB (SDRAM) sticks from an old laptop. It's not a big upgrade, but i'm wondering if I could put those 64MB sticks into the SDRAM slots I have since they are just laying around. Plus that would give me an extra 128MB of ram, which isn't too bad for a quick job, plus it's free so it's not like i'm paying for it..

Of course it's not the even the fastest SDRAM out there, but it couldn't hurt right? I'm just wondering if it's OK to do, and if it's worth putting in (I can't see why it wouldn't be, but what do I know..).

Your thoughts people?

And my big question, would I be at a disadvantage if I put these sticks in? Because even if putting them in gave me a minor boost, it's worth it until I get something better..

no the sdram will not work...
you will probably damage your mobo.

ddr OR sdr not both.

ram is cheap anyway. AU$50 for 512megs

ddr-400(pc3200), ddr-333(pc2700), ddr-266(pc2100), ddr-200(pc1600)
all will work as they are backward compatable with slower speeds.

also the laptop dimms won't fit.. they are of a reduced sizeing.

Agreed - even though your motherboard has slots for both types of memory, you can use one OR the other, but not both at the same time. The combination slots are there simply because your motherboard was probably released during a memory transition period.

Bear in mind though, if you do this, then the RAM in your system will operate at the speed of the 'slowest' stick of RAM.

Good to know.

I really need to buy some more ram. I also need a decent video card.

Come to think of it, I need a larger hardrive as well.

And maybe a DVD burner :p.

Lol.. i'll get it all eventually!

speaking of upgrades, I just got a 120gb hdd after my 60gb one crashed and died. It's memorial day and some stores offer good deals. My 120 was only $30.

Damn you cyu, your making me jealous.

I've seen some good HD deals though, a 160 gig for CAN$100 isn't that bad I think. Though i'm sure you could find cheaper deals online though.

I need a credit card :hang:.

You wouldn't want to use SDRAM in that computer anyway. It'd be like typing paint cans to a greyhound.

I think though, and you should consult your computer geek, that what you want there is a matched pair, like one of those Kingston memory kits. Athlon64's and I think Pentium 4's use a double memory channel architecture. I guess the deal is that you get a speed increase my running matched pairs.

Motherboards push the RAM as down as the slowest ones are. the DDR will work as the same as SDRAM ones. So, get youself a 512MB DDR and have fun :D
