Refining the Winamp startup process
Hey there people!
First of all i just wanna say a big thanks to all the Winamp dev team, I've been using winamp for years now and its my favorite media player EVER! So thanks guys and keep up the good work! Winamp whips Llamas ass`, hands down :D So as picky as i ever am, i was just wondering if anybody had any useful tips on improving the startup time for winamp 5.09 to load up? I know the obvious one would be to use the classic skin, but what about plugins and visuals & stuff? Not that im using a crappy PC or anything, im just totally impatient to load up this awesome program! :p (Specs: 1.3GHz P4, Win XP pro SP2, 256MB RAM, 128MB graphics) |
Try the following...
Like the Wind: tips & tweaks for your Winamp 5 Unfortunately the link was down at the time of this reply. Hopefully it should be up soon. |
I would normally suggest http://www.winampunlimited.com/like_the_wind/ but it seems to be down at the moment. :(
Anyway, until that site returns, here are some general tips: Use the built in visualizations, but not AVS, Milkdrop, or RIV. Disable the checks for media (Preferences > Media Library > Online Media > Modify Preferences) Minimize the number of third-party plugins installed. There's a start, but 'Like the Wind' has the best info around, sorry it isn't available ATM. [edit] hey jm ... yeah sad news :( [/edit] [EDIT2] Eric appears to have posted a mirror of this document at his old site, http://www.inthegray.com [/edit2] |
Plugins takes a lot of memory space and slow down the speed. use only needed plugins and disable the others. this is not applicable only for winamp but for any software

that's not necessarily true. yes a plugin will add a small overhead but a lot comes down to what the plugin does which will affect its memory footprint. and as for the speed slow down, if they're coded badly then they will slow things down but what would i know about plugins ;)
