E P I C S (tracks in excess of 10 mins)....

Starting with "Forever" by Neu!

On the album Neu! 2 (1973)

http://stat.discogs.com/R/135285-1094772194.jpg

Sounds like Jenny Ondioline by Stereolab, only much better (as these are the real deal).

Mr Jones 18th July 2005 13:46

The Orb - Blue Room, 39'08 seconds worth of chilled out bliss and the first UK single to take advantage of the 'can be as many tracks as you like so long as it's no longer than 39'08 in length' rule they introduced for chart singles.

http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/o/orb_-_blue_room.jpg

Cylob 18th July 2005 13:49

I bet you have the original (cardboard) release. :D

It's the one CD that won't rip!!!!

Mr Jones 18th July 2005 13:52

I have both original releases, it came out as a fold out edition with the original 39 minute mix, and then space for the 'edit' version which came out a week later, you could slot that into the original box or leave it as is.

I still have a sealed edition of UForb on vinyl, in it's blue pvc sealed sleeve with black title sticker on it, came with a limited editon live disc as well.

Came out on my birthday back in 1992 I think, t'was a birthday pressie to myself.

gaekwad2 18th July 2005 14:01

Can - Yoo Doo Right

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Cylob 18th July 2005 14:18

I have to spend more time with Can (also King Crimson). Perhaps Sunday morning's the best slot of the week.

From memory, it was June? I watched "Head" by The Monkees for the first time, then wrapped the day off with "Blue Room" with headphones. PRE-DOMESTICATED BLISS! :D

gaekwad2 18th July 2005 14:28

King Crimson albums are a very mixed bag.

Cylob 18th July 2005 14:39

Probably written & recorded under influence....

gaekwad2 18th July 2005 14:41

That's not the problem (for me at least), more their tendency for pompous pathos.
And (on some albums) a singer who ended up fronting Asia.

Cylob 18th July 2005 15:30

What kind of nutter would listen to Asia????

The The - Uncertain Smile (Dance Mix). Released 1982.

http://stat.discogs.com/R/167364-1097525056.jpg

Xylophone frenzy! As opposed to the album version the following year, which turned out to be a piano frenzy (Jools Holland's best piece).

Notice Matt Johnson with hair. :D

Mr Jones 18th July 2005 15:38

Moby - Hymn , Alt Quiet version, another 39'08 ambient bliss out , used to use this as my 'sending me off to sleep' tune, well before moby went crap.

Pink Floyd
Animals
1977
http://esc17.midphase.com/~calmerc/c...yd~Animals.jpg

There are three tracks over 10 minutes (Dogs - 17:06, Pigs (Three Different Ones) - 11:28 and Sheep - 10:21). My personal favorite (which is also happens to be my favorite song of all time) is Dogs.

Pink Floyd, of course, are among the masters of "epic tracks", with many beyond the ones on the above album.

Spazz333 18th July 2005 19:51

The Gathering - How to Measure a Planet
1999

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...392132b599.jpg

The last track "How to Measure a Planet" is 28 minutes of goodness. Annekke sings but it's mostly without words, she uses her voice like a guitar or other instrument. True class.

Bilbo Baggins 18th July 2005 22:48

Aphex Twin - Stone in Focus

gaekwad2 19th July 2005 11:49

Autechre - Drane

Mr Jones 19th July 2005 12:42

Floatation by The Grid.

The vinyl 12inch I have technically goes on forever, as the track ends it fades down to the sound of waves lapping at the shore, however the run out grove on the disc is cut in such a way that it never reaches the centre of the record like you would expect, it just keeps looping the same bit over and over again, the waves just keep on lapping....

I have a Foetus album that does the same trick on the last track, just keeps looping the same note, which by this time sounds like a continuous note, over and over until you have to get up and lift the arm off the disc....

Doggy Dog 19th July 2005 16:24

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Babe I'm On Fire

That's the one failing of MP3's, there's no physical element other than a click (one click could serve the whole day).

There's no record sleeve, no touch or smell, nothing to eject, no stacks on the table, not even an inlay to pull out & scrutinize. :(

So then, on to the saviours of coloured vinyl.... :D

Stereolab - Refractions in the Plastic Pulse (1997)
http://stat.discogs.com/R/90416-1110377573.jpghttp://stat.discogs.com/R/90416-1110377618.jpghttp://stat.discogs.com/R/90416-1110377630.jpg

From "Dots and Loops". The album was mixed by Mouse on Mars, perfect really. A faux krautrock band getting a touch of..... kraut.

gaekwad2 19th July 2005 17:29

OK, if Refractions... counts (I wasn't sure about it since it's basically ~5 tracks mixed together):

Tortoise - Djed

One of the few Tortoise tracks I'd always defend against Tortoise-haters (who may be right about most of the rest).

mikm 19th July 2005 17:48

Been done :p

Cylob 19th July 2005 17:51

Read the opening post of the latter, it's not quite the same thing....

2 or 3 bass chords repeated endlessly doesn't constitute a very nourishing listen...... which seems to be the essence of Tortoise.

I have Djed on, nice track, it brings Four Tet to mind. Another good one's "It's All Around You", I'm sure I've heard snippets in various ads (the wife agrees). Weighs-in at a feeble 4:19 though. :D

/just listening to it

Is it just me or did they listen to Steely Dan a lot while writing/recording that album?

shakey_snake 19th July 2005 20:38

SY-Murray Street-Karen Revisited.

LZ-DVD version of Dazed and Confused
THE epic of Epic songs.

NJK 22nd July 2005 18:21

Neil Young - change your mind ( 14 min)

CaboWaboAddict 22nd July 2005 19:15

One of the first Epics:

Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Twilightseer 4th August 2005 09:43

Many Underworld tracks clock at over 10 minutes: some of my favourites are Juanita/Kiteless, Spikee, Dark And Long...

And then you have ambient tracks: Eno's "Neroli" (53 minutes) and "Thursday Afternoon" (about 60 minutes), tons of Steve Roach tracks last more than 10 minutes, some of his albums are just one piece that lasts the entire disc :D

In my collection, nothing beats Robert Rich's "Somnium" released in 2000 on a DVD: 3 tracks, 7 hours, shortest track is 2 hours long :D

You can hold a cup final inside of 2 hours. :D

N.O.I.A. - Stranger in a Strange Land (1983)
http://stat.discogs.com/R/247641-1083246935.jpg

Crops up on many a comp, and rightly so. :)

gaekwad2 6th August 2005 13:29

The Stone Roses - Fool's Gold

Very 1990.

and not related to Cylob's sig, which only contains the crippled 4 minute version, boo!

chimichanga15 6th August 2005 19:54

Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture.
THAT is epic.

Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant Massacre
This is epic like the Odyssey is. War, raping, and all.

Yeah, but it's 4 minutes of ecstacy. :) Tragically, nobody outside the UK's heard of 'em (if only they'd gigged instead of spending all that time in court).

Which version's this anyway??? Is it real or imaginary, or even the original played back-to-back?

gaekwad2 8th August 2005 19:21

I have it on a CD maxi called What The World Is Waiting For (according to AMG it was also added to the CD version of their debut album).

And it's 7 seconds short of 10 minutes. http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3503/whistle5sk.gif

Cylob 8th August 2005 19:38

It was probably on the US or Japanese version of the debut then. :(

I'll have to acquire it for my compilation series, then have a victory cigar and glass of gin. :D

You're wrong, French rock magazines regularly cite their first album as one of the best rock albums ever made.

I only know the track "I wanna be adored", heard it once and liked it so I got it, maybe I'll get the rest ;)

I'd go for "Fool's Gold" as well, it's better than anything on the album. :)

Continuing on from zootm....

Rush - Caress of Steel (1975)
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...42081um34r.jpg

A strange album, starts with 3 regular 4 minute tracks and then turns into a sprawling prog-rock beast. 2112 does the opposite. :)

binni 12th August 2005 01:06

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score

track 9 off the album "Once", it's a great epic song about betrayal (well, IMO atleast)

Montana 3rd September 2005 00:48

Henrik B - Birth
last track on his album Kryoniks, normally henke does hard percussive techno but he released this smooth ambient album, and the last track is one of the best musical interpretation of the experience of birth, from the start in the womb until the child is out of the womb

Anyway, if you want sprawling epic prog:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

3 tracks, 11:40, 10:22 and 23:07

Cylob 12th September 2005 06:11

Van Der Graaf? Is that a before-lunch or after-supper album? Look's positively 70's?

Where dreampop & indie electronic merge. I didn't think Chapterhouse had made it as far as germany.

About as 70s as it gets, also quite theatrical.

Does "a mix of early Genesis and Public Image Limited" make any sense?
