locked folders?
im looking for a program compatable with 98se to password lock a file on my system, i know when school starts up that my mom will be on my system looking at what i have on here and frankly i dont want that to happen. any programs would be greatly appricated,
|
Use pw protected zip-files
|
you don't want your mum looking at your porn stash?
|
i want to double click into a folder and it asks for a password but i still can drag and drop stuff in there.
and no rocker i dont have a porn stash. i have very important work and dont want her sneaking around in my folder |
pfft... if you want to double click to access a folder with password protection, you can still use .zip files :P
It is just a matter of which program you use to open zip files. And what other material than pr0n would one want to hide from ones mother? Oo Wicked car designs? |
If you don't want her on your system at all, why not just password-protect your user account, lock the desktop when you go, and set a power-on password on the PC to lock her out entirely?
|
to hide one's porn (ahem) ...sorry, "important documents", i recommend axcrypt. there are a lot of freeware encryption tools out there but this one seems to be pretty user-friendly. for example i use it to encrypt my music work (and that's all...honest!)

graphics mostly i dont want her seeing but i abosultly hates it when someone other than me is on my computer. looking through everything |
get your "important files" burned and hidden somewhere...
almost every PC today have a burner by default |
argh!
no ones getting it, i want the files ON my pc STILL as a folder but when you double click into it it asks for a password. cd idea would work but my folder is updated every 15 or so minutes, depeneding on what im working on |

XP has a way to privatize some stuff but an Admin account can still see it unless you use the resident encryption which to me is pretty stale. |
Well, since it's just your mom searching, most likely just hiding the folder would be enough. Also you can put the folder in an existing sub\sub\sub\..\subfolder (play Worms2).
If noone can even find it, noone will attempt to open the folder/crack passwords. |

But if you don't want anyone else using your PC at all, then a power-on password is the only way to go. You were referring to the Windows password...I'm talking about the power-on password, which is a function of BIOS...it will prevent anyone from even getting to the operating system in the first place. Once set, it asks for this password after the power-on self-test (POST) but before Windows ever starts to load (before the first Windows splash screen). Go into your BIOS setup and you can set a power-on password there. The only way to make your machine more secure would be to password-protect BIOS as well (so no one could change the boot sequence and bypass your HD), and then lock the physical PC case (so no one could reset BIOS with a jumper or a paper clip), but these steps shouldn't be necessary against the "average mom". ;) |
how about this then...
Folder Access it replaces the locked folder's icon with a "safe" icon (which kinda draws attention to it) but its free and it works on 98 (so they claim) |

i guess not. lol i dont even know where the BIOS setup is at :igor: i'll do it as long as i can reverse it |
USB flashdrives are useful, fast and small. Very small. Fits in even the smallest hole. (not that hole sicko)
/edit: if you don't know how to access the BIOS, best thing would be to leave it as it is. You could easily screw up your entire PC in one second if you don't know your way around there. |
ya flash drive is good.

Or keep your files on an FTP server... which can give acces (by a password) remotely if you forgot to do something when you're not home, or by a regular entry with password from your regular workspace.. that way, your mom have to know both your username and password. Since I've been doing a little webdesign, I'be been working with updating FTP servers, and it works fine for me as long as the upload is something more than.... than...
than... 56K baud modems... |

that sounds like an excellent idea if i have a ftp server :( my folder was 1.25gigs last month so i would need ALOT of space |
That's too much for ftp or flash drive I think. Maybe you can get your hands on one of those detachable hard drives and work on that. You know, the older form of flash drives, looks like a cd rom station but you can pop out the hd. A little bit suspicious maybe, if you pop out your hd every time your mom walks in the room...
|
well im looking into that but still password protected files would be a hell of alot cheeper to password protect
|
A simple one-doubleclick solution (that only works if she doesn't know how to read batch files though) with 7-zip:
if exist mystuff.7z goto extract "%programfiles%\7-zip\7z.exe" a -t7z mystuff.7z "mystuff\*" -r -m0=copy -pmypassword del mystuff /s /q goto end :extract "%programfiles%\7-zip\7z.exe" x mystuff.7z del mystuff.7z :end Doubleclicking once archives all files in the mystuff directory (for speed reasons without any compression) and deletes the originals, doubleclicking again prompts for a password, extracts the files and deletes the archive. She'll still be able to browse the archive though, just not to extract any files. PS to be used at your own risk of course |

Who reckons the next thread will be titled something like....
'I pass protected my files and now I can't open them again HELP!' |

That have happened to me, I password protected the boot by the BIOS and I suddenly forgot what password I had... and there was no reset of the BIOS onboard... I finally remembered after hours of meditating :P phew that time... was a 80486 SX 33 MHz with a 1Mb Cirrius Logic VGA card and Orchid Soundwave 32 SCSI sound card... and 19 Mb RAM.. oh that was times... |

Either get an external hard drive that you can take with you everywhere (I bought a 60gb one for about £50 a few months back that fits in my pocket). Or try Protect Folder 98 http://www.everstrike.com/protect-folder-98.htm . I use Lock Folder XP and it works like a charm.
